1. An optical communications system comprising:

  • a first optical transmitter and a first optical receiver optically coupled to a first asymmetric optical combiner/splitter, the first asymmetric combiner/splitter coupled to optical media; and

a second optical transmitter and a second optical receiver optically coupled to a second asymmetric optical combiner/splitter, the second asymmetric combiner/splitter remotely coupled to the optical media, whereineach asymmetric combiner/splitter comprises a high transmittance ratio and a low transmittance ratio, andthe first optical transmitter and the second optical transmitter are configured to transmit optical signals at substantially the same wavelength.
