Abstract

Methods, systems, and media for presenting advertisements relevant to nearby users on a public display device are provided. In some implementations, a method for presenting content on a public display device, the method comprising: receiving location information associated with mobile devices that is indicative of a position of the mobile device relative to a display device associated with a retail outlet; receiving interests associated with the mobile devices; identifying a plurality of advertising sources associated with the display device, including a retailer associated with the retail outlet; determining a topic based on the received interests and the location information associated with the mobile devices; determining that the topic is related an advertisement associated with the retailer; causing the advertisement associated with the retailer to be selected based on the topic; and causing the selected advertisement to be presented by the display device.

Claims

11. A system for presenting content on a public display device, the system comprising:

a hardware processor that is programmed to;

receive location information associated with a plurality of mobile devices, wherein the location information associated with a mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices is indicative of a position of the mobile device relative to a display device associated with a retail outlet;

receive information related to one or more interests associated with at least a portion of the plurality of mobile devices;

identify a plurality of advertising sources associated with the display device, wherein the plurality of advertising sources includes at least a retailer associated with the retail outlet;

determine a topic based on the received information related to one or more interests and the location information associated with the portion of the plurality of mobile devices for which information related to one or more interests was received;

determine that the topic is related to one or more advertisements associated with the retailer;

in response to determining that the topic is related to the one or more advertisements associated with the retailer, cause an advertisement from the retailer associated with the retail outlet to be selected based on the topic; and

cause the selected advertisement to be presented by the display device.

1. A method for presenting content on a public display device, the method comprising:

receiving, using a hardware processor, location information associated with a plurality of mobile devices, wherein the location information associated with a mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices is indicative of a position of the mobile device relative to a display device associated with a retail outlet;

receiving information related to one or more interests associated with at least a portion of the plurality of mobile devices;

identifying a plurality of advertising sources associated with the display device, wherein the plurality of advertising sources includes at least a retailer associated with the retail outlet;

determining a topic based on the received information related to one or more interests and the location information associated with the portion of the plurality of mobile devices for which information related to one or more interests was received;

determining that the topic is related to one or more advertisements associated with the retailer;

in response to determining that the topic is related to the one or more advertisements associated with the retailer, causing an advertisement from the retailer associated with the retail outlet to be selected based on the topic; and

causing the selected advertisement to be presented by the display device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving information related to one or more interests associated with at least the portion of the plurality of mobile devices further comprises:

requesting identifying information for the plurality of mobile devices;

receiving identifying information for at least a subset of the plurality of mobile devices; and

requesting information related to one or more interests associated with each mobile device of the subset based on the received identifying information.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating aggregate interest information based on the received information related to one or more interests.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein determining the topic is based on the aggregate interest information.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the aggregate interest information is generated based on preferences associated with the one or more advertising sources.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the interest information is weighted based on the location information when generating the aggregate interest information.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

in response to determining that the topic is not related to the one or more advertisements made available by the retailer, causing an advertisement from another advertising source of the plurality of advertising sources to be selected based on the topic.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein causing an advertisement from the retailer to be selected further comprises:

determining that a first mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices is proximate to the display device and is relatively stationary based on the location information received for the first mobile device;

determining that the information related to one or more interests associated with the first mobile device is related to content included in a first advertisement associated with the retailer; and

selecting the first advertisement based on the determination that the first mobile device is proximate to the display device and relatively stationary and the determination that the information related to one or more interests associated with the first mobile device is correlated with the content included in a first advertisement from the retailer.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

determining whether a first user associated with the first mobile device has at least a threshold level of interest in the content included in the first advertisement from the retailer based on information related to one or more interests associated with the first mobile device; and

in response to determining that the first user has at least the threshold level of interest, selecting the first advertisement, wherein the first advertisement includes interactive content.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining, based on the received information related to one or more interests, that a first group of mobile devices each exhibit a threshold level of interest in the topic;

determining an average location of the first group of mobile devices based on the received location information for each of the mobile devices in the first group of mobile devices;

determining a first area of the display device in which the selected advertisement is to be presented based at least in part on the average location of the first group of mobile devices, wherein causing the selected advertisement to be presented further comprises causing the advertisement to be presented in the first area;

determining a second topic based on the received information related to one or more interests and the location information associated with the portion of the plurality of mobile devices for which information related to one or more interests was received;

determining that the second topic is related to one or more advertisements associated with at least one advertising source of the plurality of advertising sources;

in response to determining that the second topic is related to the one or more advertisements associated with the at least one advertising source, causing a second advertisement from the at least one advertising source to be selected based on the second topic;

determining, based on the received information related to one or more interests, that a second group of mobile devices each exhibit a threshold level of interest in the second topic;

determining an average location of the second group of mobile devices based on the received location information for each of the mobile devices in the second group of mobile devices;

determining a second area of the display device in which the second advertisement is to be presented based at least in part on the average location of the second group of mobile devices; and

causing the second advertisement to be presented in the second area of the display device.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the hardware processor is further programmed to:

request identifying information for the plurality of mobile devices;

receive identifying information for at least a subset of the plurality of mobile devices; and

request information related to one or more interests associated with each mobile device of the subset based on the received identifying information.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the hardware processor is further programmed to generate aggregate interest information based on the received information related to one or more interests.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the hardware processor is programmed to determine the topic based on the aggregate interest information.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the aggregate interest information is generated based on preferences associated with the one or more advertising sources.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein the interest information is weighted based on the location information when generating the aggregate interest information.

18. The system of claim 11, wherein the hardware processor is further programmed to:

determine that a first mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices is proximate to the display device and is relatively stationary based on the location information received for the first mobile device;

determine that the information related to one or more interests associated with the first mobile device is related to content included in a first advertisement associated with the retailer; and

select the first advertisement based on the determination that the first mobile device is proximate to the display device and relatively stationary and the determination that the information related to one or more interests associated with the first mobile device is correlated with the content included in a first advertisement from the retailer.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the hardware processor is further programmed to:

determine whether a first user associated with the first mobile device has at least a threshold level of interest in the content included in the first advertisement from the retailer based on information related to one or more interests associated with the first mobile device; and

in response to determining that the first user has at least the threshold level of interest, select the first advertisement, wherein the first advertisement includes interactive content.

16-1. The system of claim 11, wherein the hardware processor is further programmed to:

in response to determining that the topic is not related to the one or more advertisements made available by the retailer, cause an advertisement from another advertising source of the plurality of advertising sources to be selected based on the topic.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing computer executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for presenting content on a public display device, the method comprising:

receiving location information associated with a plurality of mobile devices, wherein the location information associated with a mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices is indicative of a position of the mobile device relative to a display device associated with a retail outlet;

receiving information related to one or more interests associated with at least a portion of the plurality of mobile devices;

identifying a plurality of advertising sources associated with the display device, wherein the plurality of advertising sources includes at least a retailer associated with the retail outlet;

determining a topic based on the received information related to one or more interests and the location information associated with the portion of the plurality of mobile devices for which information related to one or more interests was received;

determining that the topic is related to one or more advertisements associated with the retailer;

in response to determining that the topic is related to the one or more advertisements associated with the retailer, causing an advertisement from the retailer associated with the retail outlet to be selected based on the topic; and

causing the selected advertisement to be presented by the display device.
