Abstract

Apparatus for increasing the efficiency and safety of a starter battery for a starter motor of an internal combustion engine in a battery pack arrangement with one or more lithium based cells. The invention includes a solid state switching configuration for high powered battery systems for protecting against over-charging, over-discharging and short circuiting of batteries, especially starter batteries for internal combustion engines. The invention is also useful as a portable jump starter for internal combustion engines, as well as a charger for batteries and battery-operated electronic devices.

Claims

1. A battery pack for powering an electric motor for starting an internal combustion engine in which the electric motor is in a 6 volt to 48 volt operating system, said battery pack comprising:

a battery pack housing;

at least one lithium-based rechargeable cell within said housing;

a protection circuit board within said battery pack housing, said protection circuit board including a solid state switch which protects against high temperature, reverse polarity, undervoltage, or overvoltage.

2. A battery pack according to claim 1 wherein the lithium-based cell is selected from the group consisting of LiFePO, LiFePO₄, LiFeMgPO₄, LiFeYPO₄, LiCoO₂, LiMn₂O₄, LiNiCoAlO₂, LiNiMnCoO₂, and Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ cells.

3. A battery pack according to claim 1, wherein said battery pack comprises from three to sixteen lithium-based rechargeable cells in series within said housing.

4. A battery pack according to claim 1, which is small, lightweight, and portable.

5. A battery pack according to claim 1, wherein said solid state switch has a positive and a negative terminal, each of said cells have a positive and a negative pole, said solid state switch comprising:

at least a pair of said solid state switches, each such switch having a source and a drain, with drains connected;

said solid state switch being connected to the positive pole of said one or more cells in series, and to said positive terminal, the negative pole of said one or more cells being connected to said negative terminal.

6. A battery pack according to claim 5 wherein said solid state switch for one or more said cells within said battery pack has a positive and a negative terminal, each of said cells have a positive and a negative pole, said solid state switch apparatus comprising:

at least a pair of solid state switches, each switch having a source and a drain, with sources connected;

said solid state switch being connected to the negative pole of said one or more cells in series and to said negative terminal, the positive pole of said one or more cells being connected to said positive terminal.

7. A battery pack according to claim 5 where said solid state switches are positioned within said housing.

8. A portable jumpbox;

comprising;

a jumpbox housing;

a battery pack within said jumpbox housing comprising at least one lithium-based rechargeable cell;

a protection circuit board within said jumpbox housing, said protection circuit board including a solid state switch which protects against high temperature, reverse polarity, undervoltage, or overvoltage.

9. A portable jumpbox according to claim 8, further comprising an alarm adapted to occur upon said protection circuit board detecting an error.

10. A portable jumpbox according to claim 8, wherein said jumpbox is provided with at least one USB charging port for charging external electronic devices.

11. A portable jumpbox according to claim 8, wherein said jumpbox includes 19V and 16V charging ports for charging external devices.

12. A portable jumpbox according to claim 8, further comprising an LED light incorporated therein for use as a flashlight or spotlight.

13. A portable jumpbox according to claim 8, further comprising an LCD display for displaying a numeric number indicating the state of charge of said jumpbox.

14. A portable jumpbox according to claim 8, further comprising detachable clamps and means for activating current when a load is detected by the clamps.

15. A portable jumpbox according to claim 8, further comprising a microcontroller unit capable of hibernation mode by reducing all functionalities and duty cycle in order to reduce power consumption when not in use.

16. A portable jumpbox according to claim 14, further comprising means for turning off power to said the clamps when an engine starts and alternator current is detected by said jumpbox.

17. A portable jumpbox according to claim 8 further comprising means for detecting the temperature in said solid state switch and for turning off said jumpbox when the temperature is excessive.

A portable jumpbox according to claim 8 further comprising a solid state switching apparatus for one or more said cells within said battery pack, wherein said solid state switching apparatus has a positive and a negative terminal, each of said cells have a positive and a negative pole, said apparatus comprising:

at least a pair of solid state switches, each switch having a source and a drain, with sources connected;

said solid state switch being connected to the negative pole of said one or more cells in series, and to said negative terminal, the positive pole of said one or more cells being connected to said positive terminal.

19. A battery pack for powering an electric motor for starting an internal combustion engine in which the electric motor is a 6 volt to 48 volt operating system, said battery pack comprising:

a battery pack housing;

at least one lithium-based rechargeable cell within said housing;

wherein the lithium-based cell is selected from the group consisting of LiFePO, LiFePO₄, LiFeMgPO₄, LiFeYPO₄, LiCoO₂, LiMn₂O₄, LiNiCoAlO₂, LiNiMnCoO₂, and Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ cells.

20. A battery pack according to claim 19, further comprising a solid state switching apparatus having a positive and a negative terminal, each of said cells having a positive and a negative pole, said solid state switching apparatus comprising:

at least a pair of solid state switches, each switch having a source and a drain, with drains connected;

said solid state switch being connected to the positive pole of said one or more cells in series, and to said positive terminal, the negative pole of said one or more cells being connected to said negative terminal.
