Abstract

A passive entry passive start (PEPS) method for preventing relay attack includes detecting a distance of a wireless device to a vehicle based on a time of flight of an ultra-wideband (UWB) signal between the wireless device and a base station at the vehicle. The method further includes enabling by the base station a function of the vehicle only when the distance of the wireless device to the vehicle is within a zone of the vehicle.

21. A passive entry passive start (PEPS) method for preventing relay attack, the method comprising:

detecting a distance of a wireless device to a vehicle based on a time of flight of an ultra-wideband (UWB) signal between the wireless device and a base station at the vehicle; and

enabling by the base station a function of the vehicle only when the distance of the wireless device to the vehicle is within a predetermined zone of the vehicle.

22. The method of claim 21 further comprising:

transmitting the UWB signal from the wireless device to the base station.

23. The method of claim 22 further comprising:

transmitting the UWB signal from the wireless device to the base station with a time stamp; and

detecting the distance of the wireless device to the vehicle based on the time of flight of the UWB signal as measured based on the time stamp and a time at which the base station received the UWB signal.

24. The method of claim 21 further comprising:

transmitting the UWB signal from the base station to the wireless device;

transmitting a second UWB signal from the wireless device to the base station; and

detecting the distance of the wireless device to the vehicle based on a round trip time of flight of the UWB signals between the wireless device and the base station.

25. The method of claim 24 further comprising:

transmitting the UWB signal from the base station to the wireless device with a first time stamp;

transmitting the second UWB signal from the wireless device to the base station with a second time stamp corresponding to the time the wireless device received the UWB signal from the base station; and

detecting the distance of the wireless device to the vehicle based on a round trip time of flight of the UWB signals as measured from the first time stamp and the second time stamp.

26. The method of claim 21 further comprising:

detecting a second distance of the wireless device to the vehicle based on a time of flight of an UWB signal between the wireless device and an auxiliary base station at the vehicle; and

enabling by the base station the function of the vehicle only when the distances of the wireless device to the vehicle is within the predetermined zone of the vehicle.

27. The method of claim 21 further comprising:

detecting a second distance of the wireless device to the vehicle based on a time of flight of an UWB signal between the wireless device and a first auxiliary base station at the vehicle;

detecting a third distance of the wireless device to the vehicle based on a time of flight of an UWB signal between the wireless device and a second auxiliary base station at the vehicle;

performing trilateration with the distances to determine a zone in which the wireless device is located; and

enabling by the base station the function of the vehicle only when the zone in which the wireless device is located is within the predetermined zone of the vehicle.

28. The method of claim 21 wherein:

the function of the vehicle is an unlock vehicle door function.

29. The method of claim 21 wherein:

an operating frequency of the UWB signal is between 3 GHz and 10 GHz and the UWB signal has a bandwidth of at least 500 MHz.

30. A passive entry passive start (PEPS) system for preventing relay attack, the system comprising:

a wireless device; and

a base station at a target device, the base station configured to detect a distance of the wireless device to the target device based on a time of flight of an ultra-wideband (UWB) signal between the wireless device and the base station and to enable a function of the target device only when the distance of the wireless device to the target device is within a predetermined vicinity of the target device.

31. The system of claim 30 wherein:

the wireless device is configured to transmit the UWB signal to the base station.

32. The system of claim 31 wherein:

the wireless device is further configured to transmit the UWB signal to the base station with a time stamp; and

the base station is further configured to detect the distance of the wireless device to the target device based on the time of flight of the UWB signal as measured based on the time stamp and a time at which the base station received the UWB signal.

33. The system of claim 30 wherein:

the base station is further configured to transmit the UWB signal to the wireless device;

the wireless device is configured to transmit a second UWB signal to the base station; and

the base station is further configured to detect the distance of the wireless device to the target device based on a round trip time of flight of the UWB signals between the wireless device and the base station.

34. The system of claim 33 wherein:

the base station is further configured to transmit the UWB signal to the wireless device with a first time stamp;

the wireless device is configured to transmit the second UWB signal to the base station with a second time stamp corresponding to the time the wireless device received the UWB signal from the base station; and

the base station is further configured to detect the distance of the wireless device to the target device based on a round trip time of flight of the UWB signals as measured from the first time stamp and the second time stamp.

35. The system of claim 30 further comprising:

an auxiliary base station at the target device, the auxiliary base station configured to detect a second distance of the wireless device to the target device based on a time of flight of an UWB signal between the wireless device and the auxiliary base station; and

wherein the base station is further configured to enable the function of the target device only when the distances of the wireless device to the target device is within the predetermined vicinity of the target device.

36. The system of claim 30 further comprising:

a first auxiliary base station at the target device, the first auxiliary base station configured to detect a second distance of the wireless device to the target device based on a time of flight of an UWB signal between the wireless device and the first auxiliary base station;

a second auxiliary base station at the target device, the second auxiliary base station configured to detect a third distance of the wireless device to the target device based on a time of flight of an UWB signal between the wireless device and the second auxiliary base station; and

wherein the base station is further configured to perform trilateration with the distances to determine a zone in which the wireless device is located and to enable the function of the target device only when the zone in which the wireless device is located is within the predetermined vicinity of the target device.

37. The system of claim 30 wherein:

the target device is a vehicle and the function of the target device is an unlock door function of the vehicle.

38. The system of claim 30 wherein:

an operating frequency of the UWB signal is between 3 GHz and 10 GHz.

39. The system of claim 30 wherein:

the UWB signal has a bandwidth of at least 500 MHz.

40. A vehicle comprising:

a base station configured to detect a distance of a wireless device to the vehicle based on a time of flight of an ultra-wideband (UWB) signal between the wireless device and the base station and to enable a function of the vehicle only when the distance of the wireless device to the vehicle is within a predetermined zone of the vehicle.
