Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer storage media are provided for determining a patient'"'"'s severity of illness score (pSIS) for a patient admitted to an acute care facility. Data corresponding to physiologic components is received from an electronic medical record associated with a patient admitted to an acute care healthcare facility. The physiologic components include vital sign measurements and laboratory tests. Weights are assigned to a minimum, median, and maximum measured values for each vital sign. Weights are assigned to minimum and maximum values for each laboratory test. The weights are derived based on a deviation from normal within a time period. A pSIS is determined by summing the weights. Additional data corresponding to physiologic components may be received from the electronic medical record. The additional data may be utilized to update the weights and determine a patient'"'"'s updated pSIS that may be utilized to track a progress of the patient.

Claims

1. A computer system for determining a patient'"'"'s severity of illness score (pSIS) for a patient admitted to an acute care healthcare facility, the computer system comprising one or more processors coupled to a computer storage medium, the computer storage medium having stored thereon a plurality of computer software components executable by the one or more processors, the computer software components comprising:

a receiving module that is configured to receive data corresponding to physiologic components from an electronic medical record associated with a patient admitted to an acute care facility, the data associated with the patient'"'"'s vital sign measurements and common laboratory tests on a blood sample taken from the patient;

a determining module that is configured to determine the pSIS for the patient by summing weights associated with each physiologic component, the weights associated with each vital sign measurement derived based on minimum, median, and maximum measured values over a time period following the patient'"'"'s admission; and

an additional data module that is configured to receive additional data corresponding to the physiologic components from the electronic medical record.

2. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the weights associated with each common laboratory test derived based on minimum and maximum measured values over the time period.

3. The computer system of claim 1, further comprising a weight module that is configured to assign weights to each physiologic component, the weights derived based on a deviation from normal.

The computer system of claim 1, further comprising a comorbidity module that is configured to assign weights for one or more comorbidities associated with the patient, wherein the receiving module is further configured to receive data corresponding to comorbidities from the electronic medical record.

5. The computer system of claim 1, further comprising a prediction module that is configured to utilize the pSIS to predict one of a length of stay for the patient or hospital mortality when the time period is twenty-four hours.

6. The computer system of claim 1, further comprising an update module that is configured to update the weights and determine an updated pSIS for the patient.

One or more computer hardware storage media having computer-executable instructions embodied thereon that, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to perform a method for determining a patient'"'"'s severity of illness score (pSIS) for a patient admitted to an acute care healthcare facility, the method comprising:

receiving data corresponding to physiologic components from an electronic medical record associated with a patient admitted to an acute care healthcare facility, the data associated with the patient'"'"'s vital sign measurements;

assigning weights to each physiologic component, the weights associated with each vital sign measurement derived based on a deviation from normal for minimum, median, and maximum measured values over a time period following the patient'"'"'s admission; and

determining the pSIS for the patient by summing the weights.

8. The media of claim 7, wherein the method further comprises receiving additional data corresponding to the physiologic components from the electronic medical record.

9. The media of claim 7, wherein the method further comprises utilizing the additional data to update the weights and determine an updated pSIS for the patient.

10. The media of claim 7, wherein the data is further associated with common laboratory tests on a blood sample taken from the patient, wherein the weights associated with each common laboratory test are derived based on minimum and maximum measured values over the time period.

11. The media of claim 10, wherein the data associated with the common laboratory tests includes one or more of a sodium level, a platelet count, or a hematocrit measurement.

12. The media of claim 7, wherein the method further comprises using the pSIS to trigger alerts for clinicians associated with the patient'"'"'s physiology.

13. The media of claim 7, wherein the data associated with the patient'"'"'s vital sign measurements includes one or more of a respiratory rate measurement, a heart rate measurement, a mean arterial pressure measurement, or a body temperature measurement.

14. The media of claim 7, wherein the method further comprises receiving weights assigned to one or more comorbidities associated with the patient, wherein the data is further associated with comorbidities from the electronic medical record.

15. The media of claim 7, wherein the method further comprises predicting, based on the pSIS, one of a length of stay for the patient or hospital mortality when the time period is twenty-four hours.

16. A method for determining a patient'"'"'s severity of illness score (pSIS) for a patient admitted to an acute care healthcare facility, the method comprising;

receiving data corresponding to physiologic components from an electronic medical record associated with a patient admitted to an acute care healthcare facility, the data associated with the patient'"'"'s vital sign measurements and common laboratory tests on a blood sample taken from the patient;

assigning weights to each physiologic component, the weights for each vital sign measurement derived based on a deviation from normal for minimum, median, and maximum measured values over a time period following the patient'"'"'s admission; and

determining the pSIS for the patient by summing weights associated with each physiologic component.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the weights for each common laboratory test derived based on minimum and maximum measured values over the time period.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the data associated with the patient'"'"'s vital sign measurements includes one or more of a respiratory rate measurement, a heart rate measurement, a mean arterial pressure measurement, or a body temperature measurement.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the data associated with the common laboratory tests includes one or more of a sodium level, a platelet count, or a hematocrit measurement.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein the method further comprises predicting, based on the pSIS, one of a length of stay for the patient or hospital mortality when the time period is twenty-four hours.
