Abstract

A method and apparatus for secure transfer of previously broadcasted content enables the secure transfer of previously broadcasted content between DVRs on a computer network.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

causing, by a media device, display of a graphical user interface including a selectable list of previously broadcasted content, the list comprised of previously broadcasted programs that the media device did not record;

receiving, by the media device, a selection of a particular previously broadcasted content from the list;

sending a request, by the media device, for delivery of the particular previously broadcasted content to a server;

receiving, by the media device, one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content from one or more media devices across a network;

storing, by the media device, the one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content on one or more storage devices;

causing, by the media device, display of a notification that the particular previously broadcasted content is available for viewing.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the server determines whether the media device is authorized to receive the particular previously broadcasted content.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the one or more media devices to transfer at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content to the media device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the media device to retrieve at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content from each of the one or more media devices.

5. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

causing, by the media device, display of an estimated amount of time it will take for the media device to obtain the particular previously broadcasted content.

6. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

causing, by the media device, display of a number of media devices that have the particular previously broadcasted content stored.

7. A method, comprising:

sending, by a server, to a remote device, a web page that includes a selectable list of previously broadcasted content, the list comprised of previously broadcasted programs that a particular media device did not record;

receiving, by the server, a selection of a particular previously broadcasted content from the list;

causing, by the server, delivery of one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content from one or more media devices to the particular media device across a network, the particular media device storing the one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the server determines whether the particular media device is authorized to receive the particular previously broadcasted content.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the one or more media devices to transfer at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content to the particular media device.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the particular media device to retrieve at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content from each of the one or more media devices.

11. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

sending, by a server, to the remote device, a web page that includes an estimated amount of time it will take for the particular media device to obtain the particular previously broadcasted content.

12. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

sending, by a server, to the remote device, a web page that includes a number of media devices that have the particular previously broadcasted content stored.

13. A media device, comprising:

a display generator, implemented at least partially in hardware, that causes display of a graphical user interface that includes a selectable list of previously broadcasted content, the list comprised of previously broadcasted programs that the media device did not record;

a user input receiver, implemented at least partially in hardware, that receives a selection of a particular previously broadcasted content from the list;

a delivery requester, implemented at least partially in hardware, that sends a request for delivery of the particular previously broadcasted content to a server;

a media content receiver, implemented at least partially in hardware, that receives one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content from one or more media devices across a network;

a storage subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that stores the one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content on one or more storage devices;

wherein the display generator causes display of a notification that the particular previously broadcasted content is available for viewing.

14. The media device of claim 13, wherein the server determines whether the media device is authorized to receive the particular previously broadcasted content.

15. The media device of claim 13, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the one or more media devices to transfer at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content to the media device.

16. The media device of claim 13, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the media device to retrieve at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content from each of the one or more media devices.

17. The media device of claim 14, wherein the display generator causes display of an estimated amount of time it will take for the media device to obtain the particular previously broadcasted content.

18. The media device of claim 14, wherein the display generator causes display of a number of media devices that have the particular previously broadcasted content stored.

19. A server, comprising:

a web page generator, implemented at least partially in hardware, that sends to a remote device, a web page that includes a selectable list of previously broadcasted content, the list comprised of previously broadcasted programs that a particular media device did not record;

a user input receiver, implemented at least partially in hardware, that receives a selection of a particular previously broadcasted content from the list;

a content delivery device, implemented at least partially in hardware, that causes delivery of one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content from one or more media devices to the particular media device across a network, the particular media device storing the one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content.

20. The server of claim 19, wherein the server determines whether the particular media device is authorized to receive the particular previously broadcasted content.

21. The server of claim 19, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the one or more media devices to transfer at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content to the particular media device.

22. The server of claim 19, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the particular media device to retrieve at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content from each of the one or more media devices.

23. The server of claim 20, wherein the web page generator sends to the remote device, a web page that includes an estimated amount of time it will take for the particular media device to obtain the particular previously broadcasted content.

24. The server of claim 20, wherein the web page generator sends to the remote device, a web page that includes a number of media devices that have the particular previously broadcasted content stored.

25. One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media, storing one or more sequences of instructions, which when executed by one or more processors cause performance of:

causing, by a media device, display of a graphical user interface including a selectable list of previously broadcasted content, the list comprised of previously broadcasted programs that the media device did not record;

receiving, by the media device, a selection of a particular previously broadcasted content from the list;

sending a request, by the media device, for delivery of the particular previously broadcasted content to a server;

receiving, by the media device, one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content from one or more media devices across a network;

storing, by the media device, the one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content on one or more storage devices;

causing, by the media device, display of a notification that the particular previously broadcasted content is available for viewing.

26. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 25, wherein the server determines whether the media device is authorized to receive the particular previously broadcasted content.

27. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 25, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the one or more media devices to transfer at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content to the media device.

28. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 25, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the media device to retrieve at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content from each of the one or more media devices.

29. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 26, wherein the one or more sequences of instructions, which when executed by the one or more processors further cause performance of:

causing, by the media device, display of an estimated amount of time it will take for the media device to obtain the particular previously broadcasted content.

30. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 26, wherein the one or more sequences of instructions, which when executed by the one or more processors further cause performance of:

causing, by the media device, display of a number of media devices that have the particular previously broadcasted content stored.

31. One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media, storing one or more sequences of instructions, which when executed by one or more processors cause performance of:

sending, by a server, to a remote device, a web page that includes a selectable list of previously broadcasted content, the list comprised of previously broadcasted programs that a particular media device did not record;

receiving, by the server, a selection of a particular previously broadcasted content from the list;

causing, by the server, delivery of one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content from one or more media devices to the particular media device across a network, the particular media device storing the one or more portions of the particular previously broadcasted content.

32. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 31, wherein the server determines whether the particular media device is authorized to receive the particular previously broadcasted content.

33. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 31, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the one or more media devices to transfer at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content to the particular media device.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 31, wherein the server determines that the one or more media devices have the particular previously broadcasted content stored and instructs the particular media device to retrieve at least a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content from each of the one or more media devices.

35. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 32, wherein the one or more sequences of instructions, which when executed by the one or more processors further cause performance of:

sending, by a server, to the remote device, a web page that includes an estimated amount of time it will take for the particular media device to obtain the particular previously broadcasted content.

36. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 32, wherein the one or more sequences of instructions, which when executed by the one or more processors further cause performance of:

sending, by a server, to the remote device, a web page that includes a number of media devices that have the particular previously broadcasted content stored.
