Abstract

A remote control device includes a controller having one or more processors configured to generate a control signal for remotely controlling operation of a vehicle. The remote control device also can include a cellular modem configured to wirelessly communicate a cellular signal with a communication device disposed onboard the vehicle and a wireless modem configured to wirelessly communicate a non-cellular signal with the communication device disposed onboard the vehicle. One or more of the cellular signal or the non-cellular signal represents the control signal generated by the controller in order to remotely control the operation of the vehicle.

Claims

1. A remote control device comprising:

a controller comprising one or more processors configured to generate a control signal for remotely controlling operation of a vehicle;

a cellular modem configured to wirelessly communicate a cellular signal with a communication device disposed onboard the vehicle; and

a wireless modem configured to wirelessly communicate a non-cellular signal with the communication device disposed onboard the vehicle, wherein one or more of the cellular signal or the non-cellular signal represents the control signal generated by the controller in order to remotely control the operation of the vehicle.

2. The remote control device of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to generate the control signal for remotely controlling movement of the vehicle.

The remote control device of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to direct the cellular modem to wirelessly communicate a linking request signal as the cellular signal to the communication device and to receive a cellular acceptance signal from the communication device prior to the wireless modem communicating the non-cellular signal to control the operation of the vehicle.

4. The remote control device of claim 1, wherein the wireless modem is configured to communicate the non-cellular signal using an IEEE 802.11 standard.

5. The remote control device of claim 1, wherein the cellular modem is configured to communicate the cellular signal via one or more cellular towers.

6. The remote control device of claim 1, wherein the controller, the cellular modem, and the wireless modem are configured to remotely control the operation of the vehicle from a location that is off-board the vehicle.

The remote control device of claim 1, wherein the vehicle is included in a vehicle system formed from the vehicle and at least one additional vehicle, and wherein the controller, the cellular modem, and the wireless modem are configured to remotely control movement of the vehicle system by controlling the operation of the vehicle from a location that is off-board the vehicle system.

8. The remote control device of claim 1, wherein the cellular modem and the wireless modem do not include a radio.

9. A remote control device comprising:

a controller comprising one or more processors configured to generate a control signal for remotely controlling operation of a vehicle;

a first modem configured to wirelessly communicate a first type of signal with a communication device disposed onboard the vehicle; and

a second modem configured to wirelessly communicate a different, second type of signal with the communication device disposed onboard the vehicle, wherein the first modem is configured to wirelessly communicate the first type of signal with the communication device to establish a communication link with the communication device and the second modem is configured to wirelessly communicate the second type of signal with the communication device via the communication link to remotely control the operation of the vehicle based on the control signal that is generated by the controller.

10. The remote control device of claim 9, wherein the first modem includes a cellular modem and the first type of signal is a cellular signal, and wherein the second modem includes a non-cellular modem and the second type of signal is a non-cellular signal.

The remote control device of claim 10, wherein the controller is configured to direct the cellular modem to wirelessly communicate a linking request signal as the cellular signal to the communication device and to receive a cellular acceptance signal from the communication device prior to the non-cellular modem communicating the non-cellular signal to control the operation of the vehicle.

12. The remote control device of claim 10, wherein the non-cellular modem is configured to communicate the non-cellular signal using an IEEE 802.11 standard.

13. The remote control device of claim 10, wherein the cellular modem is configured to communicate the cellular signal via one or more cellular towers.

14. The remote control device of claim 9, wherein the controller is configured to generate the control signal for remotely controlling movement of the vehicle.

15. The remote control device of claim 9, wherein the controller, the first modem, and the second modem are configured to remotely control the operation of the vehicle from a location that is off-board the vehicle.

16. The remote control device of claim 9, wherein the vehicle is included in a vehicle system formed from the vehicle and at least one additional vehicle, and wherein the controller, the first modem, and the second modem are configured to remotely control movement of the vehicle system by controlling the operation of the vehicle from a location that is off-board the vehicle system.

17. A method for remotely controlling operation of a vehicle, the method comprising:

generating a control signal for remotely controlling operation of a vehicle using a controller comprising one or more processors;

wirelessly communicating a cellular signal with a communication device disposed onboard the vehicle using a cellular modem; and

wirelessly communicating a non-cellular signal with the communication device disposed onboard the vehicle using a wireless modem;

wherein the control signal for remotely controlling the operation of the vehicle using is communicated as one or more of the cellular signal or the non-cellular signal.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the control signal is communicated as the non-cellular signal and wherein wirelessly communicating the cellular signal includes wirelessly communicating a linking request signal as the cellular signal to the communication device to establish a communication link over which the non-cellular signal is communicated.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising receiving a cellular acceptance signal from the communication device via the cellular modem prior to wirelessly communicating the non-cellular signal using the wireless modem.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the operation of the vehicle that is remotely controlled using the control signal is movement of the vehicle.
