Abstract

A medical infusion pump and a method for logging a power source voltage of a medical infusion pump are disclosed. The medical pump may include a power source, a processor, and a voltage supervisor which responds if a voltage (VDD) drops to a response voltage level which is above a reset voltage level of the processor. When the voltage supervisor responds, the processor start logging the voltage (Vbat) of the power source in a memory, thus generating a voltage log. The memory maintains the logged data when the power supply by the power source is interrupted, thus enabling retrospective analysis of the voltage log.

Claims

1. A method for monitoring power in a portable device to permit battery replacement before a voltage supervisor of the portable device responds when a processor supply voltage (VDD) of a processor of the portable device drops to a predetermined response voltage level which is above a reset voltage level of the processor, said method comprising:

testing, during operation of the portable device, a power source voltage (Vbat) of a battery of the portable device with a testing interval; and

providing a favorable warning on the portable device if the testing the power source voltage (Vbat) of battery indicates that the battery is approaching an end of its lifetime and if, at the same time of testing, a voltage level of an output voltage of a voltage converter of the portable device is maintained, said favorable warning indicating that time still remains for battery replacement prior to a response of the voltage supervisor.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the warning further comprises alerting at multiple levels of the Vbat for which the VDD is above the response voltage level.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

selecting between either a stop mode or a maintenance mode of the portable device; and

operating the portable device in either the stop mode or the maintenance mode.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising running a clock circuit of the portable device when the battery is interrupted by a separate power supply or a power supply buffer.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein providing the warning on portable device is via a display device of the portable device.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein providing the warning on portable device is via an audible alert of the portable device.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein providing the warning on portable device is via a tactile alert of the portable device

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising monitoring the processor supply voltage (VDD) via the voltage supervisor that responds if the processor supply voltage (VDD) drops to a predetermined response voltage level which is above a reset voltage level of the processor by providing an output signal and logging a power source voltage (Vbat) of a battery in the portable device in a memory to generate a voltage log.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising determining retrospectively the cause of a power supply interruption in the portable device by retrospectively analyzing the voltage log.

10. The method of claim 8 further comprising maintaining in the memory logged data when the power supply by the battery is interrupted.

11. The method of claim 8 further comprising logging a time stamp via the processor when the voltage supervisor responds.

12. The method of claim 8 further comprising running a clock circuit of the portable device when the battery is interrupted by a separate power supply or a power supply buffer.

13. The method of claim 8 further comprising logging, via the processor, a time stamp together with the power source voltage and an event marker, the event marker being indicative for the power supply interruption.

14. The method of claim 8 further comprising:

distinguishing a dropping of the portable device from removal of the battery based on a time span of the power supply interruption;

indicating removal of the battery when the time span for the power supply interruption is greater than a predetermined time span, and otherwise reflecting the dropping of the portable device.

15. The method of claim 8 further comprising:

powering up the portable device,

running through, via the processor, a self-testing and powering-up routine, the program code of the powering-up routine being part of the general firmware that controls operation of the processor;

storing a corresponding power-up entry in the memory of the portable device together with a timestamp after completing the powering-up routine;

viewing the battery as having been removed if the time between the beginning of the logging, or the last logged value before voltage VDD has dropped to the reset voltage level is longer than the time required for running through the powering-up routine; and

reflecting that the battery was disconnected because of a dropping of the portable device if the time between the beginning of the logging, or the last logged value before voltage VDD has dropped to the reset voltage level is shorter than the time required for running through the powering-up routine.

16. The method of claim 8 further comprising delivering insulin to a patient via the portable device, wherein the portable device is an infusion pump.

17. The method of claim 8 further comprising logging the battery as having been removed when time between a beginning of the logging, or a last logged value before voltage VDD has dropped to the reset voltage level and a power-up entry is a half-a-second or more.

18. The method of claim 8 further comprising bridging the power supply interruption by an internal buffer of the portable device.

19. The method of claim 8 further comprising storing a number of logs in the memory.

20. A portable device comprising:

a processor;

a memory electrically connected to the processor;

a battery providing a processor supply voltage (VDD) to the processor, wherein the portable device during normal operation;

tests a power source voltage (Vbat) of the battery of the portable device with a testing interval; and

provides a favorable warning if the test of power source voltage (Vbat) of battery indicates that the battery is approaching an end of its lifetime and if, at the same time of the test, a voltage level of an output voltage of a voltage converter of the portable device is maintained, said favorable warning indicates that time still remains for battery replacement prior to a response of a voltage supervisor of the portable device which responds when a processor supply voltage (VDD) of the processor drops to a predetermined response voltage level which is above a reset voltage level of the processor.

21. The portable device of claim 20, wherein providing the warning on portable device is via a display device of the portable device.

22. The portable device of claim 20, wherein providing the warning on portable device is via an audible alert of the portable device.

23. The portable device of claim 20, wherein providing the warning on portable device is via a tactile alert of the portable device

24. The portable device of claim 20, wherein the testing interval is a fixed testing interval.

25. The portable device of claim 20, wherein the testing interval is a variable testing interval.

26. The portable device of claim 20, wherein the portable device is an infusion pump.

27. The portable device of claim 20, further comprising a voltage supervisor that:

monitors the processor supply voltage (VDD),

responds if the processor supply voltage (VDD) drops to a predetermined response voltage level which is above a reset voltage level of the processor by providing an output signal and logging a power source voltage (Vbat) of the battery in the memory to generate a voltage log, and

determines retrospectively the cause of a power supply interruption in the portable device by retrospectively analyzing the voltage log.

28. The portable device of claim 27, wherein the processor:

runs a powering-up routine that is part of general firmware that controls operation of the processor,

stores a corresponding power-up entry in the memory together with a timestamp after completing the powering-up routine, and

determines a battery as having been removed if time between beginning of the logging, or a last logged value before voltage VDD has dropped to the reset voltage level is longer than a time required for running through the powering-up routine, and

determines that the battery was disconnected because of a dropping of the handheld device if the time between the beginning of the logging, or the last logged value before the voltage VDD has dropped to the reset voltage level is shorter than the time required for running through the powering-up routine.
