Abstract

An authentication scheme in which an instance of a designated element is shifted to proximity with a designated target to gain access a device may be enhanced by creating conditions that allow for either the designated element or the designated target to be different for each instance of authentication. In one embodiment, a secondary display portion may be used to provide an indication of a dynamic designated element. In another embodiment, a secondary display portion, in combination with a tertiary display portion, may be used to provide an indication of a dynamic designated target.

Claims

1. A method of authenticating access to an electronic device, the method comprising:

displaying an image on a primary display portion, the image including a designated target;

displaying a first plurality of elements on the primary display portion overlaying the image, the first plurality of elements including an instance of a designated element;

displaying a second plurality of elements on a secondary display portion;

detecting sufficient proximity between the instance of the designated element and the designated target; and

responsive to the detecting, allowing access to the electronic device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the second plurality of elements includes the designated element in a designated element location and wherein the designated target is previously selected.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the secondary display portion comprises a curved display.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first plurality of elements are displayed in a grid pattern.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the first plurality of elements comprise characters.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first plurality of elements comprise objects.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

displaying a third plurality of elements on a tertiary display portion;

wherein the second plurality of elements includes a first designated location element in a first designated location element region;

wherein the third plurality of elements includes a second designated location element in a second designated location element region;

wherein the designated element is previously selected; and

wherein the designated target is identifiable using the first designated location element region and the second designated location element region.

8. An electronic device comprising:

a primary display portion;

a secondary display portion;

a processor adapted to;

display an image on the primary display portion, the image including a designated target;

display a first plurality of elements on the primary display portion overlaying the image, the first plurality of elements including an instance of a designated element;

displaying a second plurality of elements on the secondary display portion;

detect sufficient proximity between the instance of the designated element and the designated target; and

allow access to the electronic device.

9. The electronic device of claim 8 wherein the second plurality of elements includes the designated element in a designated element location and wherein the designated target is previously selected.

10. The electronic device of claim 8 wherein the secondary display portion comprises a curved display.

11. The electronic device of claim 8 wherein the processor is further adapted to arrange the first plurality of elements in a grid pattern.

12. The electronic device of claim 8 wherein the first plurality of elements comprise numeric characters.

13. The electronic device of claim 8 wherein the first plurality of elements comprise alphabetic characters.

14. The electronic device of claim 8 further comprising a tertiary display portion and:

wherein the processor is further adapted to display a third plurality of elements on the tertiary display portion;

wherein the second plurality of elements includes a first designated location element in a first designated location element region;

wherein the third plurality of elements includes a second designated location element in a second designated location element region;

wherein the designated element is previously selected; and

wherein the designated target is identifiable using the first designated location element region and the second designated location element region.

15. A computer readable medium having stored thereon computer executable instructions, the computer executable instructions comprising code that, upon execution by a processor in an electronic device, causes the processor to:

display an image on a primary display portion, the image including a designated target;

display a first plurality of elements on the primary display portion overlaying the image;

display a second plurality of elements on a secondary display portion, the second plurality of elements including a designated element in a designated element location;

detect sufficient proximity between an instance of the designated element and the designated target; and

allow access to the electronic device.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 15 wherein the second plurality of elements includes the designated element in a designated element location and wherein the designated target is previously selected.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 15 wherein the secondary display comprises a curved display.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 15 wherein execution of the code causes the processor to arrange the first plurality of elements in a grid pattern.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 15 wherein the first plurality of elements comprise numeric characters.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 15 wherein the first plurality of elements comprise alphabetic characters.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 15 wherein execution of the code causes the processor to display a third plurality of elements on a tertiary display portion;

and

wherein the second plurality of elements includes a first designated location element in a first designated location element region;

wherein the third plurality of elements includes a second designated location element in a second designated location element region;

wherein the designated element is previously selected; and

wherein the designated target is identifiable using the first designated location element region and the second designated location element region.
