Abstract

An apparatus for accessing bone marrow inside a bone is provided. The apparatus may include a penetrator assembly having a tissue penetrator and a hub. The tissue penetrator my have a hollow cannula disposed in fixed relation to the hub. The apparatus may also have a driver configured to insert a portion of the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow, and a depth control mechanism configured to control the depth of penetration of the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow. The depth control mechanism may have a sensor configured to detect a position of the bone and bone marrow. The depth control mechanism may also have a mechanical stop.

Claims

1. An apparatus for accessing bone marrow inside a bone comprising:

a penetratorassembly comprising atissue penetrator and a hub, the tissue penetrator configured to penetrate the bone and bone marrow, the tissue penetrator comprising a hollow cannula disposed in fixed relation to the huh;

a driver configured to insert a portion of the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow; and

a depth control mechanism configured to control the depth of penetration of the tissue penetrator into the booe and bone marrow, the depth control mechanism comprising a sensor configured to detect a position of the bone and bone marrow, the depth control mechanism further comprising a control mechanism configured to activate the driver to insert the portion of the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the depth control mechanism further comprises a plurality of probes connected to the sensor,

wherein the plurality of probes is configured to contact the bone,

wherein the sensor is configured to detect when the plurality of probes contacts the bone,

wherein the control mechanism is configured to activate the driver to insert the portion of the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow when the sensor detects that the plurality of probes has contacted the bone.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sensor is configured receive ultrasound waves,

wherein the control mechanism is configured to calculate a distance between the sensor and the bone based on the received ultrasound waves,

wherein the control mechanism is configured to activate the driver to insert the tissue penetrator a predetermined distance into the bone based on the calculated distance between the sensor and the bone.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the depth control mechanism is configured to insert the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow in two stages,

wherein, in a first stage, the depth control mechanism controls the driver to insert the portion of the tissue penetrator through soft tissue proximate to the bone and bone marrow,

wherein, in a second stage, the depth control mechanism controls the driver to insert the portion of the tissue penetrator through the bone and into the bone marrow.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the depth control mechanism further comprises a gear configured to rotate a predetermined number of revolutions in a first direction,

wherein the hub of the penetrator assembly comprises a plurality of ribs,

wherein the gear is configured to engage the plurality of ribs and prevent the tissue penetrator from penetrating further into the bone and bone marrow after the gear rotates the predetermined number of revolutions.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the depth co mechanism further comprises a reverse clutch mechanism, the clutch mechanism comprising:

a first clutch component attached to a portion of the driver;

a second clutch component attached to a portion of the penetrator assembly, the second clutch component in fixed relation to the tissue penetrator; and

an engagement pin attached to one of the first clutch component and the second clutch component and releasbly coupled to the other of the first clutch component and the second clutch component,

wherein the engagement pin is configured to release the other of the first clutch component and the second clutch component when the portion of the tissue penetrator is inserted into the bone and bone marrow.

8. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein a second pressure sensor is configured to detect when the tissue penetrator contacts a surface of the bone,

wherein the depth control mechanism controls the driver to insert the portion of the tissue penetrator through the bone and into the bone marrow in response to the second pressure sensor detecting that the tissue penetrator has contacted a surface of the bone.

5. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the depth control mechanism Lomprises a plurality of penetration shoulders and an annular groove,

wherein at least one of the plurality of penetration shoulders is configured to contact the annular groove when the depth control mechanism is advancing the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow,

wherein at least one of the plurality of penetration shoulders is configured to come into contact with another one of the plurality of penetration shoulders when the depth control mechanism is advancing the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow.

6. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein each of the plurality of penetration shoulders comprises one or more of a pressure sensor and a trigger.

7. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein a first pressure sensor is configured to detect when a portion of the apparatus contacts a surface of the soft tissue proximate to the bone and bone marrow,

wherein the depth control mechanism controls the driver to insert the portion of the tissue penetrator through soft tissue proximate to the bone and bone marrow in response to the first pressure sensor detecting that the portion of the apparatus has contacted the surface of the soft tissue.

11. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the gear is connected to the sensor,

wherein the sensor is configured to detect a threshold pressure,

wherein the sensor is configured to engage the gear with the plurality of ribs when the sensor detects the threshold pressure.

10. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the gear is coupled to a spring,

wherein the spring is configured to increase a resistance of the gear to rotation when the gear rotates in the first direction.

14. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the first clutch component and the second clutch component are vertically disposed in relation to each other.

13. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the engagement pin is connected to the sensor,

wherein the sensor is configured to detect when a torque acting on the engagement pin falls below a threshold value,

wherein the sensor is configured to release the coupling between the engagement pin and the other of the first clutch component and the second clutch component when the sensor detects that the torque acting on the engagement pin has fallen below the threshold valve.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the first clutch component and the second clutch component comprise concentric members,

wherein one of the first clutch component and the second clutch component is disposed around the other.

16. An apparatus for accessing bone marrow inside a bone comprising:

a housing comprising a handle;

a penetrator assembly comprising a tissue penetrator and a hub, the tissue penetrator configured to penetrate the bone and bone marrow, the tissue penetrator comprising a hollow cannula disposed in fixed relation to the hub;

a driver configured to insert a portion of the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow; and

a depth control mechanism configured to control the depth of penetration of the tissue penetrator into the bone and bone marrow, the depth control mechanism comprising a mechanical stop formed on the penetrator assembly.

19. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the protrusion comprises a proximal end with a beveled surface.

17. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the mechanical stop comprises a protrusion formed on a portion of the tissue penetrator.

18. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the protrusion comprises a distal end with a beveled surface.

20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the mechanical stop is configured to be disposed subcutaneously when the tissue penetrator is inserted into the bone and bone marrow.
