Abstract

A method for performing renal therapy at a home or dwelling of a patient using a renal therapy machine includes electronically retrieving a doctor'"'"'s prescription for renal therapy and based on the doctor'"'"'s prescription, enabling electronic selection of supplies, including a dialyzer, at a first location other than the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling by a person other than the patient. The method further includes electronically initiating a sending of the supplies and the renal therapy machine to the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling.

Claims

1. A method for performing renal therapy at a home or dwelling of a patient using a renal therapy machine, the method comprising:

electronically retrieving a doctor'"'"'s prescription for renal therapy;

based on the doctor'"'"'s prescription, enabling electronic selection of supplies, including a dialyzer, at a first location other than the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling by a person other than the patient; and

electronically initiating a sending of the supplies and the renal therapy machine to the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the supplies are electronically selected at a clinician portion of a website including a therapy prescription screen.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the supplies further include at least one of a container of a medical substance, a blood tubing set, or needles.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the supplies includes a code indicating information about the supply.

5. The method of claim 4 further including:

enabling connection of the at least one supply to the renal therapy machine;

causing the user interface of the home therapy machine to electronically obtain the code;

enabling the home therapy machine to determine the information about the supply from the obtained code;

causing the home therapy machine to compare the determined information about the supply with the prescription; and

causing the home therapy machine to perform the home renal therapy if the determined information about the supply complies with the prescription.

6. The method of claim 1, including enabling the patient to view an inventory screen on the home therapy machine, the inventory screen displaying supplies the patient is recorded as having at the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling.

7. The method of claim 6, including enabling the patient to provide information regarding an actual amount of the supplies currently residing at the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling.

8. A system for performing renal therapy comprising:

a plurality of home therapy machines each configured to perform a home therapy on a patient at a home or dwelling of the patient;

a connectivity server located remote from the home or dwelling of the patient;

a system hub coupled to the home therapy machines through the connectivity server, the connectivity server in data communication with the home therapy machines and the system hub;

a web portal configured to access the system hub; and

a website accessible via the web portal, the website including a clinician portion enabling the clinician to

electronically retrieve a doctor'"'"'s prescription for renal therapy;

based on the doctor'"'"'s prescription, enable electronic selection of supplies including at least one of a dialyzer, a tubing set, a cassette, a container of a medical substance, or needles at a first location other than the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling; and

electronically initiate a sending of the supplies and the renal therapy machine to the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the renal therapy includes any one or more of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, hemofiltration, hemodiafiltration, or continuous renal replacement.

10. A method for performing renal therapy at a home or dwelling of a patient using a renal therapy machine, the method comprising:

electronically retrieving a doctor'"'"'s prescription for renal therapy at a first location other than the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling at which the renal therapy machine is operated;

enabling electronic selection of settings at the first location, the selection made according to the doctor'"'"'s prescription; and

electronically sending the selected settings to the renal therapy machine at the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling for performing renal therapy on the patient according to the settings.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

modifying the settings at the first location for operating the renal therapy machine; and

electronically sending the selected settings to the renal therapy machine at the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling for performing renal therapy on the patient at the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling according to the modified settings.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the settings include a parameter and an allowed range of values for the parameter.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein if patient parameter editing is enabled, the patient can modify the value of the parameter within the allowed range of values for the parameter.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the renal therapy includes any one or more of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, hemofiltration, hemodiafiltration, or continuous renal replacement.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the renal therapy machine is of at least one type selected from the group consisting of:

(i) a hemodialysis machine, (ii) a peritoneal dialysis machine, (iii) a hemofiltration machine, (iv) a hemodiafiltration machine, (v) a continuous renal replacement machine, (vi) a medical fluid delivery machine, or (vii) a machine running a nutritional therapy.

16. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

allowing the settings to be set differently in different device programs for a same home therapy machine and patient.

17. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

enabling electronic selection of the settings at the first location by recalling a template with a plurality of parameters already populated with preselected values.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein the settings include a first parameter and a second parameter, and wherein values that can be entered for the second parameter depend upon values entered for the first parameter.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the first parameter is a time and the second parameter is at least one of a volume or a number of cycles.

20. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

enabling electronic selection of supplies at the first location, the selection made according to the doctor'"'"'s prescription; and

sending the supplies and the renal therapy machine to the patient'"'"'s home or dwelling.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the supplies include at least one of a dialyzer, a tubing set, a cassette, a container of a medical substance, and needles.
