Abstract

A system and method configured to establish a communication connection between a vehicle and a remote computing device for data transmission. A beacon device is configured at a location to detect the presence of the vehicle, transmit an identity of the location to the vehicle, and communicate with the vehicle to determine an identity of the vehicle. The vehicle is configured to communicate with mobile devices of occupants of the vehicle. The remote computing device is connected to the beacon device via a data communication network and configured to determine, via the beacon device communicating with the vehicle, identification information of at least one mobile device of at least one occupant of the vehicle, and establish the communication connection between the computing device and the vehicle based at least in part on the identification information and the identity of the vehicle.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

providing, at a first location on a pathway for vehicles, a beacon device connected via a data communication network to a computing device disposed at a second location remote from the first location;

detecting, by the beacon device, presence of a vehicle on the pathway;

communicating by the beacon device with the vehicle on the pathway;

determining, by the beacon device, an identity of the vehicle on the pathway;

determining, based on the identity of the vehicle and via the beacon device communicating with the vehicle, identification information of at least one mobile device carried in the vehicle; and

establishing a communication connection between the computing device and the vehicle based at least in part on the identification information and the identity of the vehicle.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

communicating, by the computing device through the communication connection to the vehicle, content relevant to the first location.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

selecting, by the computing device, the content based on the first location associated with the beacon device.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

selecting, by the computing device, the content based on the identification information.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the communication connection is established in response to identification of the content.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the communication connection does not go through the beacon device.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein the communication connection is established via a communication link between a satellite and a satellite receiver configured in the vehicle.

8. The method of claim 4, wherein the communication connection is established via a communication link between a base station of a cellular communication network and a cellular transceiver configured in the vehicle.

9. The method of claim 4, wherein the communication connection is established through the mobile device and a wireless connection between the mobile device and the vehicle.

10. The method of claim 4, wherein the at least one mobile device carried in the vehicle includes a plurality of mobile devices carried by occupants of the vehicle;

the identification information includes identities of the occupants in a mobile application configured on the mobile devices; and

the identification information is determined by one of;

the beacon device; and

the computing device via communicating with the infotainment system through the beacon device.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the plurality of mobile devices are connected via wireless connections to an infotainment system of the vehicle;

and the identification information is obtained from the mobile application via the infotainment system under control.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the selecting of the content based on the first location associated with the beacon device includes filtering out content based on identification of a portion of the occupants of the vehicle.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the content includes an offer identified based on the first location, the identity of the vehicle, and an identity of a user of the mobile device;

and the offer is presented on the infotainment system of the vehicle.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the identity of the vehicle on the pathway is determined from an electronic signal transmitted by the vehicle.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

communicating, by the beacon device, an identity of the location to the vehicle to cause the vehicle to transmit the electronic signal.

16. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions configured to instruct a computing apparatus to perform a method, the method comprising:

communicating, by a computing apparatus via a data communication network, with a beacon device provided at a first location on a pathway for vehicles, wherein the computing apparatus includes at least one of;

the beacon device and a computing device located at a second location remote from the first location, wherein the beacon device is configured to detect presence of a vehicle on the pathway;

communicate with the vehicle on the pathway; and

determine an identity of the vehicle on the pathway;

determining, by the computing apparatus based on the identity of the vehicle, identification information of at least one mobile device carried in the vehicle; and

establishing, by the computing apparatus, a communication connection between the computing device and the vehicle based at least in part on the identification information and the identity of the vehicle.

17. A system, comprising:

a plurality of beacon devices configured at a plurality of locations, including a first beacon device configured at a first location on a pathway for vehicles, wherein each of the vehicles includes a transceiver to communicate with the beacons; and

an infotainment system; and

a computing device disposed at a second location remote from the first location and connected to the plurality of beacon devices via a data communication network;

wherein the first beacon device is configured to detect presence of a first vehicle on the pathway and communicate with the transceiver of the first vehicle on the pathway to determine an identity of the first vehicle on the pathway;

wherein, based on the identity of the first vehicle, the system determines, via the first beacon device communicating with the first vehicle, identification information of at least one mobile device carried in the first vehicle; and

wherein the computing device establishes a communication link between the computing device and the first vehicle based at least in part on the identification information and the identity of the first vehicle.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the mobile device runs a mobile application that is configured to establish a communication connection with the infotainment system of the first vehicle and communicate with the first beacon via the infotainment system to provide the identification information;

and after the identification of the identity of the first vehicle and the identification information, the first beacon instructs, via the infotainment system, the mobile device to establish the communication link with the computing device via a wireless communication network.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the communication link goes through the mobile device but not the first beacon device.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the communication link goes through the first beacon device but not the mobile device.
