Abstract

A handle for use with a surgical instrument system can comprise a first handle housing portion comprising an output and a second handle housing portion comprising, one, an electric motor comprising a rotatable motor shaft and, two, an actuator for operating the electric motor. The handle further comprises an articulation joint, wherein the second handle housing portion is rotatably connected to the first handle housing portion about the articulation joint, and wherein the second handle housing portion is rotatable between a first grip position and a second grip position. The handle further includes a transmission configured to transmit motion between the first motor shaft and the output. In various instances, the transmission comprises a cable and a slip joint configured to adjust the length of the cable depending on the position of said second handle housing portion.

Claims

1. A handle for use with a surgical instrument system, said handle comprising:

a first handle housing portion, comprising;

a first output rotatable about a first longitudinal axis; and

a second output rotatable about a second longitudinal axis;

a second handle housing portion, comprising;

a first electric motor comprising a first rotatable motor shaft;

a second electric motor comprising a second rotatable motor shaft;

a first actuator for operating said first electric motor; and

a second actuator for operating said second electric motor;

a hinge, wherein said second handle housing portion is rotatably connected to said first handle housing portion about said hinge, wherein said second handle housing portion is rotatable between a pistol grip position and an in-line grip position;

a first flexible transmission configured to transmit rotational motion between said first motor shaft and said first rotatable output; and

a second flexible transmission configured to transmit rotational motion between said second motor shaft and said second rotatable output.

2. The handle of claim 1, wherein said first flexible transmission comprises a first cable, and wherein said second flexible transmission comprises a second cable.

The handle of claim 2, wherein said first transmission comprises a first slip joint configured to adjust to changes in length between said first electric motor and said first output, and wherein said second transmission comprises a second slip joint configured to adjust to changes in length between said second electric motor and said second output.

The handle of claim 1, wherein said first rotatable motor shaft extends in a transverse direction to said first longitudinal axis when said second handle housing portion is in said pistol grip position, and wherein said first rotatable motor shaft extends in a parallel direction with said first longitudinal axis when said second handle housing portion is in said in-line grip position.

The handle of claim 4, wherein said second rotatable motor shaft extends in a perpendicular direction to said second longitudinal axis when said second handle housing portion is in said pistol grip position, and wherein said second rotatable motor shaft extends in a parallel direction with said second longitudinal axis when said second handle housing portion is in said in-line grip position.

6. The handle of claim 1, further comprising a housing lock configured to releasably lock said second handle housing portion in said pistol grip position and said in-line grip position.

7. The handle of claim 6, wherein said housing lock only locks said second handle housing portion to said first handle housing portion when said second handle housing portion is in said pistol grip position and said in-line grip position.

8. The handle of claim 1, wherein said first handle housing portion comprises a shaft attachment portion, and wherein a modular shaft assembly is releasably attachable to said shaft attachment portion.

9. A handle for use with a surgical instrument system, said handle comprising:

a first handle housing portion, comprising;

a first output rotatable about a first longitudinal axis; and

a second output rotatable about a second longitudinal axis;

a second handle housing portion, comprising;

a first electric motor comprising a first rotatable motor shaft;

a second electric motor comprising a second rotatable motor shaft;

a first actuator for operating said first electric motor; and

a second actuator for operating said second electric motor;

an articulation joint, wherein said second handle housing portion is rotatably connected to said first handle housing portion about said articulation joint, and wherein said second handle housing portion is rotatable between a first grip position and a second grip position;

a first transmission configured to transmit rotational motion between said first motor shaft and said first rotatable output; and

a second transmission configured to transmit rotational motion between said second motor shaft and said second rotatable output.

10. The handle of claim 9, wherein said first transmission comprises a first cable, and wherein said second transmission comprises a second cable.

11. The handle of claim 10, wherein said first transmission comprises a first slip joint configured to adjust to changes in length between said first electric motor and said first output, and wherein said second transmission comprises a second slip joint configured to adjust to changes in length between said second electric motor and said second output.

The handle of claim 9, wherein said first rotatable motor shaft extends in a transverse direction to said first longitudinal axis when said second handle housing portion is in said first grip position, and wherein said first rotatable motor shaft extends in a parallel direction with said first longitudinal axis when said second handle housing portion is in said second grip position.

13. The handle of claim 12, wherein said second rotatable motor shaft extends in a perpendicular direction to said second longitudinal axis when said second handle housing portion is in said first grip position, and wherein said second rotatable motor shaft extends in a parallel direction with said second longitudinal axis when said second handle housing portion is in said second grip position.

14. The handle of claim 9, further comprising a housing lock configured to releasably lock said second handle housing portion in said first grip position and said in-line grip position.

15. The handle of claim 14, wherein said housing lock only locks said second handle housing portion to said first handle housing portion when said second handle housing portion is in said first grip position and said second grip position.

16. The handle of claim 9, wherein said first handle housing portion comprises a shaft attachment portion, and wherein a modular shaft assembly is releasably attachable to said shaft attachment portion.

17. A handle for use with a surgical instrument system, said handle comprising:

a first handle housing portion comprising an output;

a second handle housing portion, comprising;

an electric motor comprising a rotatable motor shaft;

an actuator for operating said electric motor; and

an articulation joint, wherein said second handle housing portion is rotatably connected to said first handle housing portion about said articulation joint, and wherein said second handle housing portion is rotatable between a first grip position and a second grip position;

a transmission configured to transmit motion between said first motor shaft and said output.

18. The handle of claim 17, wherein said transmission comprises a cable.

19. The handle of claim 18, wherein said transmission comprises a slip joint configured to adjust to changes in length between said electric motor and said output.
