Abstract

Systems and methods for selecting, combining and duplexing signals in a communications network. Several configurations of diplexers and channel selectors are disclosed which use filters, combiners and splitters to select and combine which the signals to be either received or transmitted.

Claims

1. A channel selector comprising:

a first filter having a first terminal and a second terminal;

a second filter having a first terminal and a second terminal, the first terminal being coupled to the first terminal of the first filter;

a first single pole, single throw (SPST) switch having a first terminal and a second terminal, the first and second terminals being electrically connected when the switch is closed and electrically isolated when the switch is open, the first terminal being coupled to the second terminal of the first filter;

a second SPST switch having a first terminal and a second terminal, the first and second terminals being electrically connected when the switch is closed and electrically isolated when the switch is open, the first terminal being coupled to the second terminal of the second filter; and

a combiner/splitter having two isolation terminals and a common terminal, the first isolation terminal being coupled to the second terminal of the first switch and the second isolation terminal being coupled to the second terminal of the second switch.

The channel selector of claim 1, wherein the first filter has a frequency response that passes signals in the lower frequency range of the D-Band used for transmission of cable television signals over coaxial cable and wherein the second filter has a frequency response that passes signals in the higher frequency range of the D-Band used for transmission of cable television signals over coaxial cable, the 3 dB cutoff at the high end of the frequency response of the first filter being no higher in frequency than the low 3 dB cutoff at the low end of the frequency response of the second filter.

The channel selector of claim 1, wherein the first filter has a frequency response that passes signals in the lower frequency range of the E-Band used for transmission of satellite television signals over coaxial cable and wherein the second filter has a frequency response that passes signals in the higher frequency range of the E-Band used for transmission of satellite television signals over coaxial cable, the 3 dB cutoff at the high end of the frequency response of the first filter being no higher in frequency than the low 3 dB cutoff at the low end of the frequency response of the second filter.

4. The channel selector of claim 1, further comprising:

a first power amplifier coupled between the first isolation terminal of the combiner/splitter and the second terminal of the first SPST switch; and

a second power amplifier coupled between the second isolation terminal of the combiner/splitter and the second terminal of the second SPST switch.

5. The channel selector of claim 1, further comprising:

a first power amplifier coupled between the second terminal of the first filter and the first terminal of the first SPST switch; and

a second power amplifier coupled between the second terminal of the second filter and the first terminal of the second SPST switch.

6. The channel selector of claim 1, further comprising:

a first low noise amplifier coupled between the first isolation terminal of the combiner/splitter and the second terminal of the first SPST switch and the; and

a second low noise amplifier coupled between the second isolation terminal of the combiner/splitter and the second terminal of the second SPST switch.

7. A channel selector of claim 1, further comprising:

a first low noise amplifier coupled between the second terminal of the first filter and the first terminal of the first SPST switch; and

a second low noise amplifier coupled between the second terminal of the second filter and the first terminal of the second SPST switch.

20. A method of selecting signals from a combined signal, the method comprising:

receiving a signal within a common port of a splitter;

coupling the signal from a first isolation port of the splitter to a first switch and from a second isolation port of the splitter to a second switch;

coupling an output from the first switch to a first terminal of a first filter;

coupling an output from the second switch to a first terminal of a second filter;

coupling a second terminal of the first filter to a common output port and to a second terminal of the second filter; and

selecting signals from one of three frequency bands to be passed from the common port of the splitter to the common output port by selectively opening or closing the first and second switch.

22. A channel selector comprising:

a first filter having a first terminal and a second terminal;

a second filter having a first terminal and a second terminal, the first terminal being coupled to the first terminal of the first filter;

a first switch having a first terminal and a second terminal, the first terminal and second terminals being electrically connected when the switch is closed and electrically isolated when the switch is open, the first terminal being coupled to the second terminal of the first filter;

a second switch having first terminal and a second terminal, the first and second terminals being electrically connected when the switch is closed and electrically isolated when the switch is open, the first terminal being coupled to the second terminal of the second filter; and

a combiner/splitter having two isolation terminals and a common terminal, the first isolation terminal being coupled to the second terminal of the first switch and the second isolation terminal being coupled to the second terminal of the second switch.

23. The channel selector of claim 22, wherein the first terminal of the first filter is operable to receive an input signal.

24. The channel selector of claim 23, wherein the input signal is compatible with a multimedia over coax alliance (MoCA) standard.

25. The channel selector of claim 23, wherein the first terminal of the first filter is operable to transmit a MoCA signal.

26. The channel selector of claim 23, wherein the first terminal of the second filter is operable to receive a MoCA signal.

27. The channel selector of claim 23, wherein the first terminal of the second filter is operable to transmit a MoCA signal.

28. The channel selector of claim 22, wherein the second terminal of the second filter is operable to receive an input signal.

29. The channel selector of claim 22, wherein the channel selector comprises:

a first amplifier coupled between the first isolation terminal of the combiner/splitter and the second terminal of the first switch; and

a second amplifier coupled between the second isolation terminal of the combiner/splitter and the second terminal of the second switch.

30. The channel selector of claim 29, wherein the first amplifier is a power amplifier.

31. The channel selector of claim 30, wherein the second amplifier is a low noise amplifier.

32. The channel selector of claim 29, wherein the second amplifier is a low noise amplifier.

33. The channel selector of claim 22, further comprising:

a first amplifier coupled between the second terminal of the first filter and the first terminal of the first switch; and

a second amplifier coupled between the second terminal of the second filter and the first terminal of the second switch.

34. The channel selector of claim 33, wherein the first amplifier is a power amplifier.

35. The channel selector of claim 34, wherein the second amplifier is a low noise amplifier.

36. The channel selector of claim 33, wherein the second amplifier is a low noise amplifier.
