Abstract

The invention provides a method of monitoring an activity session comprising receiving activity data indicative of at least one activity performed during the activity session, the activity data comprising a plurality of measurements associated to a plurality of parameters monitored during the activity session; a processor comparing at least some of the received measurements associated to at least two of the parameters with at least one set of a plurality of sets of measurements stored on a tangible computer readable medium; and a processor generating a training plan based at least partly on a comparison between the received measurements and the stored measurements. Other aspects of the invention provide an exercise coaching system.

Claims

1. A method of monitoring an activity session comprising:

receiving activity data indicative of at least one activity performed during the activity session, the activity data comprising a plurality of measurements associated to a plurality of parameters monitored during the activity session;

a processor comparing at least some of the received measurements associated to at least two of the parameters with at least one set of a plurality of sets of measurements stored on a tangible computer readable medium; and

a processor generating a training plan based at least partly on a comparison between the received measurements and the stored measurements.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of sets of stored measurements are associated to respective activity types.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising determining an activity type within the activity session at least partly from comparing the at least some of the received measurements with the sets of stored measurements.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein one of the parameters comprises an effort parameter.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the effort parameter comprises one of heart rate, speed, heart rate variability, respiration rate, power, energy expenditure, acceleration and force.

6. The method of claim 3 wherein one of the parameters comprises a resistance parameter.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the resistance parameter comprises one of altitude, slope, gradient, stride rate, stroke rate, cadence, and distance per limb turnover.

8. The method of claim 6 or claim 7 wherein comparing the received measurements associated to the resistance parameter comprises determining an increase in altitude.

9. The method of any one of claims 6 to 8 wherein comparing the received measurements associated to the resistance parameter comprises determining a decrease in altitude.

10. The method of any one of claims 6 to 9 wherein comparing the received measurements associated to the resistance parameter comprises determining a constant altitude.

11. The method of claim 3 wherein one of the parameters comprises a turnover parameter.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the turnover parameter comprises one of stride rate, cadence, and stroke rate.

13. The method of claim 3 wherein one of the parameters comprises a biomedical parameter.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the biomedical parameter comprises one of ECG and BP.

15. The method of claim 3 wherein one of the parameters comprises a biomechanical parameter.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the biomechanical parameter comprises one of vertical oscillation, leg power balance, arm power balance, power through range of motion, footstrike impact, time on ground, and footstrike pattern.

17. The method of claim 3 wherein one of the parameters comprises an environmental parameter.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the environmental parameter comprises one of temperature, humidity, and wind speed.

19. The method of claim 3 wherein one of the parameters comprises a cardiorespiratory parameter.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the cardiorespiratory parameter comprises one of oxygen uptake and oxygen saturation.

21. The method of any one of claims 3 to 20 wherein comparing the received measurements associated to the at least two parameters includes comparing the received measurements against at least one lower threshold.

22. The method of any one of claims 3 to 20 wherein comparing the received measurements associated to the at least two parameters includes comparing the received measurements against at least one upper threshold.

23. The method of any one of claims 3 to 20 wherein comparing the received measurements associated to the effort parameter comprises comparing the received measurements against at least one lower threshold and at least one upper threshold.

24. The method of any one of claims 3 to 23 wherein the stored measurements comprise a training plan.

25. The method of claim 24 wherein comparing the received measurements associated to at least two parameters includes determining conformity with the training plan.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein conformity with the training plan is determined at least partly from one or more of duration, distance, intensity, number of distinct activity types, number of instances of an activity type, and rest periods between activity types.

27. The method of any one of claims 24 to 26 wherein comparing the received measurements associated to at least two parameters includes determining one of an improvement, static state, and deterioration in physical ability.

28. The method of claim 27 further comprising determining one or more physiological performance measures.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein the performance measure(s) include(s) one or more of cardiovascular, neurocardio, and muscular.

30. The method of claim 24 wherein comparing the received measurements associated to at least two parameters includes determining an overall performance measure.

31. The method of claim 30 further comprising determining an overall performance measure at least partly from scores assigned to one or more of endurance, strength endurance, and speed.

32. The method of claim 24 wherein the training plan represents a planned workout to be performed by a user.

33. The method of claim 32 further comprising transmitting an alert to a user while the user performs the planned workout.

34. The method of claim 33 wherein the alert comprises an instruction to the user to modify the planned workout.

35. The method of claim 33 wherein the alert comprises a modification to the training plan.

36. The method of claim 24 wherein the training plan represents historical workout data associated to a user.

37. The method of claim 36 wherein generating the training plan comprises generating a modification to an existing training plan.

38. The method of claim 24 wherein the training plan represents a modification based on a benchmark parameter.

39. The method of claim 38 further comprising transmitting an alert to a user while the user performs the activity session.

40. The method of claim 39 wherein the alert comprises an instruction to the user to modify the activity session.

41. A tangible computer readable medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform the method of any one of the preceding claims.

42. An activity monitoring system comprising:

a display;

a processor; and

a tangible computer readable medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform the method of any one of claims 1 to 40.

43. An exercise coaching system comprising:

a data acquisition module adapted to receive activity data indicative of at least one activity performed during an activity session, the activity data comprising a plurality of measurements associated to a plurality of parameters monitored during the activity session;

a classification engine adapted to compare at least some of the received measurements associated to at least two of the parameters with at least one set of a plurality of sets of measurements stored on a tangible computer readable medium; and

a training plan generator adapted to generate a training plan based at least partly on a comparison between the received measurements and the stored measurements.

44. The system of claim 43 further comprising a plurality of data measurement devices adapted to measure activity data indicative of at least one activity performed during the activity session, the data acquisition module adapted to receive the activity data from the data measurement devices.

45. The system of claim 43 or claim 44 further comprising an alert generator configured to generate an alert.

46. The system of any one of claims 43 to 45 wherein the plurality of sets of stored measurements are associated to respective activity types.

47. The system of claim 46 wherein the classification engine is adapted to determine an activity type within the activity session at least partly from comparing the at least some of the received measurements with the sets of stored measurements.

48. The system of claim 47 wherein one of the parameters comprises an effort parameter.

49. The system of claim 48 wherein the effort parameter comprises one of heart rate, speed, heart rate variability, respiration rate, power, energy expenditure, acceleration and force.

50. The system of claim 47 wherein one of the parameters comprises a resistance parameter.

68. The system of any one of claims 47 to 67 wherein the stored measurements comprise a training plan.

69. The system of claim 68 further comprising a compliance engine adapted to determine conformity of the received measurements associated to at least two parameters with the training plan.

70. The system of claim 69 wherein the compliance engine determines conformity with the training plan at least partly from one or more of duration, distance, intensity, number of distinct activity types, number of instances of an activity type, and rest periods between activity types.

71. The system of any one of claims 68 to 70 wherein the performance engine is adapted to determine one of an improvement, static state, and deterioration in physical ability.

72. The system of claim 71 wherein the performance engine is adapted to determine one or more physiological performance measures.

73. The system of claim 72 wherein the performance measure(s) include(s) one or more of cardiovascular, neurocardio, and muscular.

74. The system of claim 68 wherein the performance engine is adapted to determine an overall performance measure.
