Abstract

An Intelligent Sensor Interfacing Unit (ISIU) for detection and configuration of sensors for a Portable Electronic Device (PED). The ISIU may identify sensors connected to the PED, according to an implementation of the present subject matter. The ISIU then determines information relating to the capabilities and requirements of the identified sensors. The ISIU on the basis of the determined sensor information may access that one of the sensors'"'"' identified may be newly coupled to the PED. Further, the ISIU upon accessing that one of the sensors'"'"' may be newly coupled to the PED, shares sensor information with Host CPU of the PED. The Host CPU upon receiving such information configures the newly coupled sensor and trains the ISIU for execution of the newly coupled sensor in future.

Claims

1. A method for detecting and configuring sensors for a portable electronic device (PED), the method comprising:

identifying at least one sensor connected to the portable electronic device;

determining sensor information corresponding to each of the at least one sensor, wherein the sensor information is indicative of capabilities and requirements of each of the at least one sensor;

assessing a sensor from amongst the at least one sensor to be newly coupled to the PED based on comparison of the sensor information with a sensor information database, wherein the sensor information database includes a sensor identification (ID) corresponding to each preconfigured sensor; and

configuring the sensor onto the PED for sensing data.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the configuring comprises:

sharing sensor information corresponding to the sensor with a processing unit of the PED;

receiving at least one of configuration settings, sensor ID, and working policy corresponding to the sensor from the processing unit; and

updating the sensor information database with at least one of the configuration settings, sensor ID, and working policy corresponding to the sensor.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sensor information at least includes a vendor identification ID corresponding to the at least one sensor.

4. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sensor ID is a unique number associated with each sensor of the PED, and wherein the sensor ID is allocated to each sensor upon configuration.

5. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sensor database includes a look up table, wherein the look up table at least includes at least sensor information and sensor ID corresponding to each preconfigured sensor.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1 further comprises scheduling at least one sensor event based on the configured sensor.

7. A method for detecting and configuring sensors for a PED, the method comprising:

configuring at least one sensor for the PED based on allocation of configuration settings, sensor ID, and working policy, wherein the configuration settings include at configuration registers corresponding to the at least one sensor;

processing information, by an intelligent sensor interface unit (ISIU), sensed by the at least one configured sensor, wherein processing unit of the PED is in a predefined power mode;

generating an event based on the processed information, wherein the event is indicative of booting up a processing unit of the PED mode.

8. The method as claimed in claim 7 wherein the predefined power mode of the processing unit is a shut down mode.

9. The method as claimed in claim 8, wherein the processing further comprises:

filtering the information sensed by the at least one configured sensor based on a working policy, wherein the working policy is indicative of functionality associated with the at least one configured sensor; and

analyzing the filtered information to generate the event based on the working policy.

The method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the filtering of information includes computation of at least one of magnitude of the information, Root mean square of the information, Mean of the sensed information, Fast Fourier transform (FFT) of the sensed information, Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of the sensed information, and Signal Energy of the sensed information.

11. The method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the functionality is at least one of gesture recognition, voice activity detection, heart rate monitoring, foot steps identification, and speech recognition.

12. An Intelligent Sensor Interfacing Unit (ISIU) for detecting and configuring sensors for a Portable electronic Device (PED), the ISIU comprises of:

a sensor detection unit to;

identify at least one sensor connected to the PED;

determine sensor information corresponding to each of the at least one sensor, wherein the sensor information is indicative of capabilities and requirements of each of the at least one sensor;

assess a sensor from amongst the at least one sensor to be newly coupled to the PED based on comparison of the sensor information with a sensor information database, wherein the sensor information database includes a sensor identification (id) corresponding to each preconfigured sensor; and

a policy manager and scheduler to configure the sensor onto the PED for sensing data.

13. The ISIU as claimed in claim 12, wherein the sensor information at least includes a vendor identification ID corresponding to the at least one sensor.

14. The ISIU as claimed in claim 12, wherein the sensor ID is a unique number associated with each sensor of the PED, and wherein the sensor ID is allocated to each sensor upon configuration by the policy manager and scheduler.

15. The ISIU as claimed in claim 12 further schedules at least one sensor event based on the configured sensor.

16. A portable electronic device (PED) for detecting and configuring sensors, the PED comprising:

a host Central Processing Unit (CPU) to;

identify at least one sensor connected to the PED;

determine sensor information corresponding to each of the at least one sensor, wherein the sensor information is indicative of capabilities and requirements of each of the at least one sensor;

assess a sensor from amongst the at least one sensor to be newly coupled to the PED based on comparison of the sensor information with a sensor information database, wherein the sensor information database includes a sensor identification (id) corresponding to each preconfigured sensor; and

configure the sensor onto PED to sense data.

17. The PED as claimed in claim 16, wherein host CPU configures the sensor by:

sharing sensor information corresponding to the sensor with a processing unit of the PED;

receiving at least one of configuration settings, sensor ID, and working policy corresponding to the sensor from the processing unit; and

updating the sensor information database with at least one of the configuration settings, sensor ID, and working policy corresponding to the sensor.

18. The PED as claimed in claim 16, wherein the Host CPU comprises of host interface registers to interface with an Intelligent Sensor Interfacing Unit (ISIU) which further handles data sampling, filtering, analytics of the sensing data while the Host CPU goes to low power mode.

19. The PED as claimed in claim 16, configured to enable the ISIU through the host interface register, to sense data from the sensor.
