Abstract

A system and method for monitoring a patient'"'"'s blood glucose levels and communicating such levels to a patient care network is provided. More particularly, a monitor for measuring blood glucose levels may be adapted to alert the patient and preselected members of the patient care network in the event that the patient'"'"'s blood glucose levels fall below a threshold amount. The monitor may be further adapted to communicate with means for automatically delivering glucose into a patient'"'"'s body and means for delivering insulin into the patient'"'"'s body, each means operating alone or in combination. Such a system and method may have applications in preventing symptomatic hypoglycemic episodes and providing diagnostic aid to medical professionals.

Claims

1. A system for monitoring and treating hypoglycemia in a patient, comprising:

a patient;

a monitor physically linked to the patient to measure the patient'"'"'s blood glucose levels; and

at least one member in addition to the patient, each of the at least one additional members communicatively linked with the monitor in a patient care network;

wherein the monitor is configured communicate the measured blood glucose levels to one or more of the additional members of the patient care network.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising an alarm adapted to visually and/or audibly alert the patient when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a threshold amount.

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising an alarm adapted to visually and/or audibly alert one or more of the additional members of the patient care network when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a threshold amount.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising a means for delivering therapeutic doses of insulin into the body of the patient, the means communicatively linked with the monitor.

The system of claim 4, wherein, when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a threshold amount, the monitor communicates instructions to the means for delivering therapeutic doses of insulin into the body of the patient to automatically stop delivery of insulin into the patient'"'"'s body.

6. The system of claim 1, further comprising a means for delivering therapeutic doses of glucose into the body of the patient, the means communicatively linked with the monitor.

The system of claim 6, wherein, when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a threshold amount, the monitor communicates instructions to the means for delivering therapeutic doses of glucose into the body of the patient to automatically begin delivery of insulin into the patient'"'"'s body.

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising a means for alternatively delivering therapeutic doses of insulin and therapeutic doses of glucose into the body of the patient, the means communicatively linked with the monitor.

The system of claim 8, wherein, when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a first threshold amount, the monitor communicates instructions to the means for alternatively delivering therapeutic doses of insulin and therapeutic doses of glucose into the body of the patient to automatically stop delivery of insulin into the patient'"'"'s body.

The system of claim 8, wherein, when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a second threshold amount, the monitor communicates instructions to the means for alternatively delivering therapeutic doses of insulin and therapeutic doses of glucose into the body of the patient to automatically begin delivery of glucose into the patient'"'"'s body.

11. A system for monitoring and treating hypoglycemia in a patient, comprising:

a patient;

a monitor physically linked to the patient to measure the patient'"'"'s blood glucose levels;

at least one member in addition to the patient, each of the at least one additional members communicatively linked with the monitor in a patient care network; and

a means for delivering therapeutic doses of glucose into the body of the patient, the means communicatively linked with the monitor;

wherein the monitor is configured communicate the measured blood glucose levels to one or more of the additional members of the patient care network; and

wherein, when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a threshold amount, the monitor communicates instructions to the means for delivering therapeutic doses of glucose into the body of the patient to automatically begin delivery of glucose into the patient'"'"'s body.

12. The system of claim 11, further comprising an alarm adapted to visually and/or audibly alert the patient when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a threshold amount.

13. The system of claim 11, further comprising an alarm adapted to visually and/or audibly alert one or more of the additional members of the patient care network when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a threshold amount.

14. The system of claim 11, further comprising a means for delivering therapeutic doses of insulin into the body of the patient, the means communicatively linked with the monitor,

They system of claim 14, wherein, when the monitor measures blood glucose levels below a threshold amount that is greater than or equal to the threshold amount that triggers delivery of glucose into the patient'"'"'s body, the monitor communicates instructions to the means for delivering therapeutic doses of insulin into the body of the patient to automatically stop delivery of insulin into the patient'"'"'s body.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the monitor is communicatively linked to one or both of a means for delivering therapeutic amounts of insulin into the body of the patient and a means for delivering therapeutic amounts of glucose into the body of the patient.

The method of claim 18, wherein the step of prompting treatment to correct low blood glucose levels comprises communicating instructions to the means for delivering therapeutic amounts of insulin into the body of the patient to automatically stop delivery of insulin into the patient'"'"'s body when blood glucose levels are measured to be below a threshold amount.

The method of claim 18, wherein the step of prompting treatment to correct low blood glucose levels comprises communicating instructions to the means for delivering therapeutic amounts of glucose into the body of the patient to automatically begin delivery of glucose into the patient'"'"'s body when blood glucose levels are measured to be below a threshold amount.

16. A method for monitoring and treating hypoglycemia in a patient, comprising:

providing a monitor to measure a patient'"'"'s blood glucose levels;

communicating the measured blood glucose levels to at least one member, other than the patient, of a patient care network;

determining whether the patient'"'"'s blood glucose levels are measured to be below a threshold amount; and

prompting treatment to correct low blood glucose levels.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising automatically alerting one or more members, other than the patient, of the patient care network when the patient'"'"'s blood glucose levels are measured to be below the threshold amount.
