Abstract

A system for monitoring medical conditions including pressure ulcers, pressure-induced ischemia and related medical conditions comprises at least one sensor adapted to detect one or more patient characteristic including at least position, orientation, temperature, acceleration, moisture, resistance, stress, heart rate, respiration rate, and blood oxygenation, a host for processing the data received from the sensors together with historical patient data to develop an assessment of patient condition and suggested course of treatment. In some embodiments, the system can further include a support surface having one or more sensors incorporated therein either in addition to sensors affixed to the patient or as an alternative thereof. The support surface is, in some embodiments, capable of responding to commands from the host for assisting in implementing a course of action for patient treatment. The sensor can include bi-axial or tri-axial accelerometers, as well as resistive, inductive, capactive, magnetic and other sensing devices, depending on whether the sensor is located on the patient or the support surface, and for what purpose.

Claims

1. A system for monitoring the physiologic condition of a patient for automatically providing risk assessment of the patient for use in pressure ulcer management comprising

at least one sensor configured to be affixed to a patient for automatically measuring at least one patient parameter selected from a group comprising activity level, mobility level, friction, shear force, moisture, incontinence, humidity level, hydration, nutrition status, sensory perception, tissue perfusion, and

processor responsive to the at least one patient parameter for providing as an output data representative of risk assessment of the patient for use in pressure ulcer management.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the data representative of risk assessment comprises part of the data used to assess Braden score for the patient.

3. The system of claim 1 further comprising

data storage having stored therein patient-specific data, the stored patient-specific data being configured to be retrieved for use in combination with the data representative of risk assessment to assess Braden score for the patient.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein at least one of nutrition status and sensory perception are entered manually.

5. The system of claim 3 wherein the patient-specific data includes patient identification.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the patient-specific data comprises at least one of a group comprising height, weight, BMI, mass distribution, pressure ulcer history, co-morbidities.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein at least one of the group of patient-specific data is entered manually.
