Abstract

An analytical apparatus and a method for isolating and analyzing at least one analyte are described, comprising at least one module for receiving and dispensing a sample to be analyzed, at least one module for isolating said analyte to be analyzed, at least one module for analyzing said analyte, wherein said modules (i) to (iii) are arranged along an axis.

Claims

1. An automated method for isolating and analyzing at least one analyte in an analytical apparatus, comprising the steps of:

a) receiving a sample comprised in a sample container in at least one module for receiving and dispensing samples to be analyzed;

b) transporting a first consumable for isolating an analyte comprised in said sample from a stacker to said at least one module for receiving and dispensing samples to be analyzed with a transport module;

c) dispensing said sample into said first consumable for isolating an analyte comprised in said sample;

d) transporting said first consumable for isolating an analyte comprised in said sample with said transport module from said at least one module for receiving and dispensing samples to be analyzed to at least one module for isolating said analyte to be analyzed;

e) isolating said analyte in said at least one module for isolating said analyte to be analyzed; and

f) analyzing said analyte in at least one module for analyzing said analyte.

2. The automated method of claim 1, wherein said analyte is a nucleic acid.

3. The automated method of claim 1, wherein said analyte is transported by said transport module from said at least one module for isolating said analyte to be analyzed to said at least one module for analyzing said analyte.

4. The automated method of claim 1, wherein the isolated analyte is transferred from said first consumable for isolating an analyte comprised in said sample to a second consumable for analyzing said analyte.

5. The automated method of claim 4, wherein said second consumable for analyzing said analyte is transferred by said transport module from the said at least one module for isolating said analyte to said at least one module for analyzing said analyte.

The automated method of claim 1, wherein said transport module comprises two transfer devices, wherein one transfer device transfers consumables from said stacker to module (i) or (ii), from module (i) to module (ii) and from module (ii) to an interface between module (ii) and module (iii), and from module (i), module (ii) or the interface to a waste consumable holder;

and the second transfer device transfers consumables between the interface and module (iii).

7. The automated method of claim 1, wherein said method additionally comprises, between steps e) and f), the step of preparing reaction mixtures for analyzing said at least one analyte.

8. The automated method of claim 1, wherein the steps are performed in said analytical apparatus comprising:

(i) at least one module for receiving and dispensing samples to be analyzed,

(ii) at least one module for isolating said analyte to be analyzed

(iii) at least one module for analyzing said analyte,

wherein said modules (i) to (iii) are arranged along an axis and said modules are fixed to neighboring modules;

(iv) at least one transport module for transferring consumables,

wherein said at least one transport module is arranged parallel to said axis in front of modules (i) to (iii);

(v) at least one stacker, wherein said at least one stacker is arranged along said axis in front of said modules (i) to (iii).
