Abstract

Aspects of the present invention relate to methods and systems for the see-through computer display systems with focus and/or vergence adjustment systems.

Claims

1. A head-worn display that provides a displayed stereo image overlaid onto a see-through view of a surrounding environment where a focus distance and vergence distance associated with the displayed stereo image can be changed, comprising:

a. left and right display optics, each including upper optics and a partially reflective combiner, wherein each upper optics include an image source, illumination source and one or more lenses;

b. two removable focus shift elements, each positioned between one of the image sources and its respective combiner to change the focus distance of the displayed stereo image; and

c. an integrated processor that provides stereo images to the left and right display optics and adapted to position the stereo images at a vergence distance that is changed in correspondence to the focus distance.

2. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the focus shift elements change the focus distance to a focus distance that is within the arm'"'"'s length of the user.

3. The head-worn display of claim 2 wherein the displayed stereo images include one or more augmented reality objects.

4. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the removable focus shift elements are separate for the left and right display optics.

5. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the removable focus shift elements are joined between the left and right display optics.

6. The head-worn display of claim 1 further comprising a sensor to detect the presence of a removable focus shift element.

7. The head-worn display of claim 6 wherein the sensor further detects information regarding the focus shift associated with the removable focus shift element.

8. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the image processor changes the vergence distance of portions of the stereo images by rendering the stereo image with a changed disparity.

9. The head-worn display of claim 8 wherein the disparity of the entire stereo image is changed to provide a stereo image with a different vergence viewing distance

10. The head-worn display of claim 1 further comprising corrective lenses positioned behind the combiners to improve the view of both the displayed image and the see-through view based on the user'"'"'s prescription.

11. The head-worn display of claim 10 wherein the corrective lenses, the combiners and the removable focus shift elements are connected.

12. The head-worn display of claim 7 wherein the vergence distance of the displayed stereo images is automatically changed in correspondence to the detected focus shift associated with the removable focus shift element.

13. The head-worn display of claim 7 wherein the focus shift elements further comprise a barcode that describes the focus shift amount provided by the focus shift element and the barcode is detected by the sensor.

14. The head-worn display of claim 7 wherein a visible indicator is added to the displayed image when a removable focus shift element is detected.

15. The head-worn display of claim 7 wherein the presentation of the displayed image is modified when a removable focus shift element is detected.

16. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the focus shift elements are Fresnel lenses.

17. The head-worn display of claim 10 wherein the corrective lenses are Fresnel lenses.

18. The head worn display of claim 10 wherein the corrective lenses are adjustable lenses.

19. The head-worn display of claim 10 wherein the corrective lenses are attached to a frame of the head-worn display such that they can swing out of the display field of view when not in use.

20. The head-worn display of claim 10 wherein the focus shift element and the corrective lenses are attached together in a removeable assembly.
