Abstract

A clip applier adapted for use with a surgical robot is disclosed. The clip applier comprises a shaft having clips stored therein and jaws adapted for receiving a clip from the shaft. The shaft is in mechanical communication with a robotic mounting portion. The robotic mounting portion contains a gear drive assembly for rotating the shaft, feeding clips into the jaws and forming clips in the jaws.

Claims

1. A surgical fastener deploying instrument comprising:

an end effector capable of supporting and deploying a clip onto tissue;

a shaft assembly capable of rotation about an axis operably interfacing with the end effector for transmitting an actuation motion to the end effector; and

a gear drive train connected to the shaft assembly, the gear train configured to receive power and control from a robotic system, the gear drive train adapted to separately control rotation of the shaft assembly and actuation of the end effector.

2. The instrument of claim 1, wherein the end effector is a clip applier having opposed jaws.

3. The instrument of claim 2, wherein the drive train is configured to feed a clip into the jaws.

4. The instrument of claim 3, wherein the drive train is configured to crimp the clip in the jaws.

5. The instrument of claim 4, wherein the drive train is configured to independently feed and crimp the clip.

6. A surgical fastening instrument comprising:

an end effector having a jaw assembly capable of supporting and deploying a fastener onto tissue;

a shaft assembly capable of rotation about an axis operably interfacing with the end effector for transmitting an actuation motion to the end effector where the shaft assembly contains at least one fastener; and

a gear drive train connected to the shaft assembly, the gear drive train configured to receive power and control from a robotic system, the gear drive train adapted to separately control rotation of the shaft assembly, opening and closing of the jaws and advancement of the fastener from the shaft into the jaw assembly.

7. The instrument of claim 6, wherein the gear drive train comprises a pinion in mechanical communication with a worm gear where the worm gear is affixed to the shaft assembly such that rotation of the pinion in a first direction rotates the shaft assembly in a first direction.

The instrument of claim 7, wherein the gear drive train further comprises a second pinion in mechanical communication with a first rack where the first rack is in mechanical communication with a fastener feed assembly such that rotation of the pinion in a first direction moves the rack in a first linear direction advancing the fastener in the shaft assembly.

The instrument of claim 8, wherein the gear drive train further comprises a second pinion in mechanical communication with a second rack where the second rack is in mechanical communication with a jaw open and close assembly such that rotation of the second pinion in a first direction moves the second rack in a first linear direction actuating the jaw open and close assembly.

10. A surgical fastener deploying instrument comprising:

a housing adapted for attaching to a robotic surgical system;

a shaft having a plurality of clips stored therein, the shaft having a proximal end and a distal end;

jaws adjacent to the shaft distal end;

a shaft rotation means in the housing in communication with the shaft for rotating the shaft;

a clip feeding means in the housing in communication with the shaft for feeding the clips from the shaft into the jaws; and

a clip forming means in the housing in communication with the jaws for crimping a clip in the jaws.
