Abstract

A tile drain and method of installing a tile drain is provided. The tile drain includes a drain body and a drain cover. The drain body defines a top opening, top weep apertures, and bottom weep apertures. The top opening receives the drain cover and serves as the primary drain for the tile drain. The top weep apertures are positioned below a top layer, such as a tile layer, of the base so as to receive fluid positioned between the top layer and a top waterproofing layer of the base. The sub weep apertures are positioned below the top waterproofing layer of the base so as to receive fluid positioned between the top waterproofing layer and a bottom waterproofing layer of the base. The drain body is encapsulated within the base, but the drain cover is adjustable relative to, and removable from, the drain body.

Claims

1. A tile drain comprising a drain body, the tile drain being configured for use with a base having vertically displaced top and bottom waterproofing layers and a tile layer that is positioned above the top waterproofing layer,

wherein said drain body defines a top opening, said top opening being configured to allow fluid above the tile layer to flow into said drain body,

wherein said drain body defines top weep apertures, said top weep apertures being configured to allow fluid positioned between the tile layer and the top waterproofing layer to flow into said drain body,

wherein said drain body defines sub weep apertures, said sub weep apertures being configured to allow fluid positioned between the top and bottom waterproofing layers to flow into said drain body, and

wherein said drain body defines a bottom opening, said bottom opening being configured to allow fluid in said drain body to flow out of said drain body.

2. The tile drain of claim 1, wherein said top weep apertures are defined by a top wall such that they are positioned on a top surface of said drain body.

3. The tile drain of claim 1, further comprising a bottom lip extending outward from said drain body, said sub weep apertures being positioned directly above said bottom lip.

4. The tile drain of claim 3, wherein said bottom lip includes a bottom surface that is configured to interface with a support structure and a top surface that is configured to interface with the bottom waterproofing layer.

5. The tile drain of claim 1, further comprising a drain cover defining a plurality of drain apertures, said drain cover being configured to selectively interface with said top opening of said drain body such that said drain cover is adjustable and removable.

The tile drain of claim 5, further comprising an inner lip extending from an inner wall of said drain body, said inner lip being configured to provide vertical support for said drain cover such that the vertical position of said drain cover is adjustable by selectively positioning one or more shim between said inner lip and said drain cover.

7. The tile drain of claim 5, wherein said drain body is generally round in shape.

8. The tile drain of claim 7, wherein said drain cover comprises a bottom portion that is configured to extend into said drain body and to selectively interface with said drain body so as to accommodate adjusting the vertical position of said drain cover relative to said drain body.

9. The tile drain of claim 8, wherein said bottom portion of said drain cover defines threads and wherein said drain body defines corresponding threads.

10. The tile drain of claim 1, wherein said drain body is generally linear in shape.

The tile drain of claim 10, further comprising an end cap, said end cap being configured to selectively couple to a distal end of a longitudinal portion of said drain body, said distal end being moveable by removing a portion of said longitudinal portion, thereby changing the length of the tile drain.

12. The tile drain of claim 11, wherein said longitudinal portion of said drain body is fabricated at least partially from a polyvinyl chloride material.

13. A method of installing a tile drain, the method comprising:

creating a bottom waterproofing layer such that fluid positioned above the bottom waterproofing layer is directed to sub weep apertures defined by a drain body of the tile drain;

creating a top waterproofing layer such that fluid positioned above the top waterproofing layer is directed to top weep apertures defined by the drain body of the tile drain; and

creating a tile layer by installing tile on top of the top waterproofing layer and over a portion of the drain body, thereby concealing the top waterproofing layer and the top weep apertures,

wherein the top waterproofing layer is vertically displaced upwards from the bottom waterproofing layer, and

wherein the sub weep apertures are positioned below the top waterproofing layer.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the bottom waterproofing layer extends onto a top surface of a bottom lip of the drain body, the bottom lip extending outward from the drain body.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising adjusting the vertical position of a drain cover by positioning one or more shim between the drain cover and an inner lip of the drain body, the inner lip extending from an inner wall of the drain body.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the drain body is generally round in shape, the method further comprising:

inserting a bottom portion of a drain cover through a top opening of the drain body so as to cause the bottom portion of the drain cover to extend at least partially into an interior area of the drain body; and

adjusting the vertical position of the drain cover relative to the drain body by selectively interfacing the bottom portion of the drain cover with the drain body.

The method of claim 16, wherein the bottom portion of the drain cover defines threads and wherein the drain body defines corresponding threads such that adjusting the vertical position of the drain cover relative to the drain body is accomplished by rotating the drain cover relative to the drain body.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein the drain body is generally linear in shape.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

cutting a longitudinal portion of the drain body so as to define a distal end of the longitudinal portion, thereby changing the length of the drain body;

coupling an end cap to the distal end of the longitudinal portion; and

sealing the end cap to the distal end of the longitudinal portion.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the longitudinal portion of the drain body is fabricated at least partially from a polyvinyl chloride material.
