Abstract

A system and method for pairing a dialysis machine with peripheral devices are disclosed. An example system includes first and second memory devices, a first dialysis machine including a first memory device port configured to be connectable to the first memory device, and a second dialysis machine including a second memory device port configured to be connectable to the second memory device. The system also includes an intermediate data transfer unit including a port configured to connect to the first and the second memory devices to enable data transfer with the respective dialysis machines. The intermediate data transfer unit is configured to receive data from a weight sensor, a blood pressure sensor, or a remote exchange device for a patient and store the data to the first or second memory device to communicate the data to the respective first or second dialysis machine.

Claims

1. :

A dialysis system comprising;

first and second memory devices;

a first dialysis machine including a first memory device port configured to be connectable to the first memory device;

a second dialysis machine including a second memory device port configured to be connectable to the second memory device; and

an intermediate data transfer unit including a port configured to connect to the first and the second memory devices to enable data transfer with the respective dialysis machines, the intermediate data transfer unit configured to;

receive data from a weight sensor, a blood pressure sensor, or a remote exchange device for a patient, and

store the data to the first or second memory device to communicate the data to the respective first or second dialysis machine.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the intermediate data transfer unit is configured to receive the data wirelessly from the weight sensor or the blood pressure sensor.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the intermediate data transfer unit is configured to receive the data additionally from at least one of (i) a temperature sensor, (ii) a bioimpedance sensor, or (iii) a glucose monitor.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the intermediate data transfer unit includes an input device that when actuated, causes the intermediate transfer unit to erase the data for the patient.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the patient is a first patient and the intermediate data transfer unit is configured to;

communicate the data for the first patient to the first dialysis machine via the first memory device;

erase the first patient data; and

communicate data for a second patient to the second dialysis machine via the second memory device.

The dialysis system of claim 5, wherein the intermediate data transfer unit is configured to prevent receiving the data for the second patient until after the data for the first patient is erased.

The dialysis system of claim 5, wherein the intermediate data transfer unit is configured to;

detect removal of the first memory device from the port of the intermediate data transfer unit; and

erase the first patient data after detecting the removal of the first memory device.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the intermediate data transfer unit stores the data for the patient to the first memory device, and wherein the intermediate data transfer unit is configured to;

receive second data for the patient from the other of the weight sensor or the blood pressure sensor; and

store the second data for the patient to the first memory device.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the patient is a first patient and the intermediate data transfer unit is configured to;

communicate the data for the first patient to the first dialysis machine via the first memory device; and

communicate data for a second patient to the second dialysis machine via the second memory device.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the first memory device is assigned a username and password, and wherein the intermediate data transfer unit is configured to prompt a user for the username and password before storing the data to the first memory device.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the first memory device is configured to be exclusive with the first dialysis machine to prevent communication of the first memory device with the second dialysis machine.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the intermediate data transfer unit is configured to;

receive ultrafiltration data from the remote exchange device; and

store the ultrafiltration data to the first or second memory device to communicate the data to the respective first or second dialysis machine.

The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the first and second memory devices include at least one of a flash drive and a universal serial bus (“

USB”

) drive.

14. :

An intermediate data transfer unit apparatus comprising;

a housing separate from a housing of a first dialysis machine and a housing of a second dialysis machine;

a port carried by the housing and connectable to a first memory device and a second memory device to enable data transfer with the first dialysis machine, which is configured to communicate with the first memory device, and the second dialysis machine, which is configured to communicate with the second memory device; and

an interface for wirelessly receiving data from at least one of a weight sensor, a blood pressure sensor, or a remote exchange device,

wherein the intermediate data transfer unit is programmed to;

receive the data, via the interface, from at least one of the weight sensor, the blood pressure sensor, or the remote exchange device for a patient, and

store the data to the first or second memory device to communicate the data to the respective first or second dialysis machine.

15. :

A dialysis data storage method comprising;

receiving, in an intermediate data transfer unit, data related to a patient from at least one of a weight sensor, a blood pressure sensor, or a remote exchange device;

causing the intermediate data transfer unit to detect a connection of a memory device to a port of the intermediate data transfer unit; and

causing the intermediate data transfer unit to store the data to the memory device so that the memory device can be transported to a dialysis machine for transfer of the data from the memory device to the dialysis machine.

The method of claim 15, wherein the memory device is a first memory device, the patient is a first patient, and the dialysis machine is a first dialysis machine, the method further comprising;

causing the intermediate data transfer unit to erase the data related to the first patient after storing the data to the first memory device;

receiving, in the intermediate data transfer unit, data related to a second patient from at least one of the weight sensor, the blood pressure sensor, or the remote exchange device;

causing the intermediate data transfer unit to detect a connection of a second memory device to the port of the intermediate data transfer unit; and

causing the intermediate data transfer unit to store the data related to the second patient to the second memory device via the intermediate data transfer unit.

The method of claim 15, which includes receiving the data wirelessly in the intermediate data transfer unit from at least one of the weight sensor, the blood pressure sensor, or the remote exchange device.

The method of claim 15, further comprising pairing the intermediate data transfer unit with at least one of the weight sensor, the blood pressure sensor, or the remote exchange device before communicating the data related to the patient.

The method claim 15, wherein the memory device is associated with a username and password, the method further comprising;

causing the intermediate data transfer unit to prompt a user for the username and password;

causing the intermediate data transfer unit to receive the username and password from the user; and

conditioned upon the username and password from the user matching the username and password associated with the memory device, causing the intermediate data transfer unit to store the data to the memory device.

The method claim 15, wherein the patient is a first patient, the method further comprising;

receiving an input in the intermediate data transfer unit indicating that the data is to be erased;

causing the intermediate data transfer unit to erase the data related to the first patient stored in the intermediate data transfer unit; and

enabling reception, in the intermediate data transfer unit, of data related to a second patient from at least one of the weight sensor, the blood pressure sensor, or the remote exchange device.
