Abstract

A system for removing molten metal from a vessel is disclosed. The system includes a pump and a refractory casing that houses the pump. As the pump operates it moves molten metal upward through an uptake section of the casing until it reaches an outlet wherein it exits the vessel. The outlet may be attached to a launder. Another system uses a wall to divide a cavity of the chamber into two portions. The wall has an opening and a pump pumps molten metal from a first portion into a second portion until the level in the second portion reaches an outlet and exits the vessel.

Claims

1. A method for transferring molten metal by utilizing a pumping device for placement into a pumping well for pumping molten metal, the pumping device including (a) a pump having a motor, a rotor and a drive shaft connecting the motor to the rotor, and (b) a portable refractory housing in which the molten metal pump is positioned;

the portable refractory housing including;

(i) an inlet, (ii) an uptake tube having a height, and (iii) an outlet having a height, and in communication with the uptake tube, (c) the rotor being positioned in the uptake tube, and (d) the pump being removable from the portable refractory housing without removing the portable refractory housing from the pumping well, and the portable refractory housing also being removable from the pumping well, the method comprising the steps of;

(a) operating the pump to turn the rotor;

(b) in response to the rotor turning, moving molten metal upward into the uptake tube without creating a vortex at the surface of the molten metal inside of the chamber, after the level of molten metal inside the uptake tube reaches half the height or more of the height of the uptake tube; and

(c) in response to the level of molten metal exceeding the height of the outlet, the molten metal exiting the chamber through the outlet.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the rotor turns continuously until at least some molten metal exits the outlet.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the rotor turns intermittently until at least some molten metal exits the outlet.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein there is no vortex at the surface of the molten metal inside of the uptake tube, after the level of molten inside the uptake tube reaches 55% or more, or 60̂

or more, or 65% or more, or 70% or more, or 75% or more, or 80% or more, or 90% or more than the height of the uptake tube.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein there is no vortex at the surface of the molten metal inside of the chamber, after the level of molten inside the chamber reaches 75% or more.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein there is no vortex at the surface of the molten metal inside of the chamber, after the level of molten inside the chamber reaches 90% or more.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the pump includes a first side and a mounting flange on the first side, the mounting flange for connecting to the platform, wherein the platform is on a top surface of the portable refractory housing.

8. The method of claim 1 that further includes a launder attached to the outlet.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the portable refractory housing has a rectangular outer surface.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the pump rests on a platform above the portable refractory housing so the rotor is positioned in the first section.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the pump includes a second side and a second mounting flange on the second side, the second mounting flange for connecting to the platform on the portable refractory housing.

12. The method of claim 8 wherein the portable refractory housing includes a front side with one or more front flanges, and the launder has a first end proximal the pump and a second end distal the pump, the first end of the launder having one or more launder flanges wherein each of the one or more launder flanges aligns with one of the one or more front flanges for connecting the launder to the portable refractory housing.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the portable refractory housing includes a bottom surface and the pump is not in contract with the bottom surface.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein the launder has a top to retain heat.

15. The method of claim 8 that includes a pumping well having a top surface wherein the launder rests on the top surface of the pumping well.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the outlet is horizontal.

17. The method of claim 8 wherein the launder is horizontal.

18. The method of claim 8 wherein the launder has an angle of 1 degree to ten degrees sloping towards the outlet.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the uptake tube has a first section having a first cross-sectional area and a second section having a second cross-sectional area, the second section being above the first section, and the second cross-sectional area being greater than the first cross-sectional area, the rotor being positioned in the first section.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the molten metal rises in the uptake section at a rate of between 1 to 6 inches per second.
