Abstract

The various embodiments described herein include methods and devices for interactive data visualization. In one aspect, a method is performed at a device with a touch-sensitive surface and a display. The method includes displaying a first chart, the first chart concurrently displaying a first dimension and a first measure. The method further includes (i) detecting a touch input at a location that corresponds to a location on the first chart; (ii) determining whether the touch input is in a first region corresponding to the first dimension or in the second region corresponding to the first measure; and (iii) in response to detecting the touch input in the first region, adding another dimension through an animated transition to display a second chart, where at least one visual mark in the first chart is split into a plurality of visual marks in the second chart through the animated transition.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

at an electronic device with a touch-sensitive surface and a display;

displaying a first chart on the display, wherein the first chart concurrently displays a first dimension and a first measure;

detecting a first touch input at a location on the touch-sensitive surface that corresponds to a location on the display of the first chart;

determining whether the first touch input is in a first region corresponding to the first dimension or is in the second region corresponding to the first measure; and

in response to detecting the first touch input in the first region, adding another dimension to the first chart through an animated transition to display a second chart, wherein at least one visual mark in the first chart is split into a plurality of visual marks in the second chart through the animated transition according to the added dimension.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first touch input comprises an un-pinch gesture.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein adding another dimension to the first chart through an animated transition to display a second chart comprises, during the animated transition, displaying a plurality of dimension options, each dimension option of the plurality of dimension options corresponding to a respective dimension.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising, prior to displaying the plurality of dimension options, ranking the dimension options;

wherein the added dimension is selected from the plurality of dimension options based on the ranking.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein displaying the plurality of dimension options comprises, for each dimension option, displaying a name of the respective dimension.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein displaying the plurality of dimension options comprises, for each dimension option, displaying a plurality of categories of the respective dimension.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein adding another dimension to the first chart through an animated transition to display a second chart comprises:

in response to detecting the first touch input, displaying a plurality of dimension options;

receiving user selection of a particular dimension option of the plurality of dimension options, each dimension option of the plurality of dimension options corresponding to a respective dimension; and

in response to receiving the user selection, adding the respective dimension to the first chart.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein adding another dimension to the first chart through an animated transition to display a second chart includes displaying a relationship between categories of the first dimension and categories of the added dimension.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the added dimension is one of a plurality of dimension options, and the method further comprises:

detecting a second touch input at a location corresponding to the added dimension; and

in response to detecting the second touch input, replacing the added dimension with another dimension of the plurality of dimension options.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the second touch input comprises a swipe gesture.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

displaying a respective label for each displayed dimension;

detecting a second touch input at a location corresponding to the respective label for the added dimension; and

in response to detecting the second touch input, displaying a plurality of dimension options.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

detecting a second touch input in the first region;

in response to detecting the second touch input in the first region, initiating an animated transition of adding another dimension to the second chart to display a third chart;

while displaying the animated transition, determining whether the second touch input comprises a complete gesture; and

in accordance with a determination that the second touch input does not comprise a complete gesture, displaying the second chart.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein:

in response to detecting the first touch input in the second region, adding a second measure to the first chart through an animated transition to display a second chart, creating additional visual marks in the second chart for the second measure corresponding to at least a subset of values of the first dimension while maintaining display of visual marks from the first chart.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the visual marks from the first chart are displayed at a smaller size when displayed in the second chart.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein at least one display characteristic of the additional visual marks is distinct from at least one display characteristic of the visual marks from the first chart.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising, prior to adding the second measure to the first chart, ranking a plurality of measure options;

and

wherein adding the second measure to the first chart comprises adding the second measure to the first chart based on the ranking.

17. An electronic device, comprising:

a display;

a touch-sensitive surface;

one or more processors;

memory; and

one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for;

displaying a first chart on the display, wherein the first chart concurrently displays a first dimension and a first measure;

detecting a first touch input at a location on the touch-sensitive surface that corresponds to a location on the display of the first chart;

determining whether the first touch input is in a first region corresponding to the first dimension or is in the second region corresponding to the first measure; and

in response to detecting the first touch input in the first region, adding another dimension to the first chart through an animated transition to display a second chart, wherein at least one visual mark in the first chart is split into a plurality of visual marks in the second chart through the animated transition according to the added dimension.

18. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs, configured for execution by an electronic device with a display and a touch-sensitive surface, the one or more programs comprising instructions for:

displaying a first chart on the display, wherein the first chart concurrently displays a first dimension and a first measure;

detecting a first touch input at a location on the touch-sensitive surface that corresponds to a location on the display of the first chart;

determining whether the first touch input is in a first region corresponding to the first dimension or is in the second region corresponding to the first measure; and

in response to detecting the first touch input in the first region, adding another dimension to the first chart through an animated transition to display a second chart, wherein at least one visual mark in the first chart is split into a plurality of visual marks in the second chart through the animated transition according to the added dimension.
