Abstract

Some embodiments provide a mapping application that displays a transit map including a group of transit lines. The mapping application receives a request to display a transit route in the transit map. The mapping application also, in response to the received request, displays the transit route by modifying portions of transit lines along the route to emphasize the portions of the transit lines while modifying other transit lines not along the route to de-emphasize the transit lines not along the route.

Claims

1. For a mapping application, a method comprising:

displaying a transit map comprising a plurality of transit lines;

receiving a request to display a transit route in the transit map; and

in response to the received request, displaying the transit route by modifying portions of transit lines along the route to emphasize the portions of transit lines while modifying other transit lines not along the route to de-emphasize the transit lines not along the route.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the transit lines of the plurality of transit lines are displayed using colors that correspond to colors used by transit system providers that operate on the transit line.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein modifying the other transit lines to de-emphasize the other transit lines comprises reducing color saturation of the other transit lines that are not along the transit route.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein modifying the portions of transit lines along the route comprises increasing at least one of size and color saturation of the portions of transit lines along the route.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the transit map further comprises a set of additional features, wherein the method further comprises reducing color saturation of the additional features.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a request to enter a navigation mode for the displayed transit route; and

entering a navigation mode of the mapping application that emphasizes a location of a mobile device on which the mapping application operates and a current transit line of the transit route.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising modifying a traveled section of the current transit line as a location of the mobile device moves along the transit route in order to differentiate the traveled section from an untraveled section of the current transit line.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein entering the navigation mode comprises displaying a walking portion of the transit route for guiding a user from a current location of the mobile device to a first transit line of the transit route.

9. A non-transitory machine-readable medium storing a mapping application for execution by at least one processing unit of a mobile device, the mapping application comprising:

displaying a transit map comprising a plurality of transit lines;

receiving a request to display a transit route in the transit map; and

in response to the received request, displaying the transit route by modifying portions of transit lines along the route to emphasize the portions of transit lines while modifying other transit lines not along the route to de-emphasize the transit lines not along the route.

10. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the transit lines of the plurality of transit lines are displayed using colors that correspond to colors used by transit system providers that operate on the transit line.

11. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the set of instructions for modifying the other transit lines to de-emphasize the other transit lines comprises a set of instructions for reducing color saturation of the other transit lines that are not along the transit route.

12. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11, wherein the set of instructions for modifying the portions of transit lines along the route comprises a set of instructions for increasing at least one of size and color saturation of the portions of transit lines along the route.

13. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11, wherein the transit map further comprises a set of additional features, wherein the mapping application further comprises a set of instructions for reducing color saturation of the additional features.

14. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the mapping application further comprises sets of instructions for:

receiving a request to enter a navigation mode for the displayed transit route; and

entering a navigation mode of the mapping application that emphasizes a location of the mobile device on which the mapping application operates and a current transit line of the transit route.

15. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 14, wherein the mapping application further comprises a set of instructions for modifying a traveled section of the current transit line as a location of the mobile device moves along the transit route in order to differentiate the traveled section from an untraveled section of the current transit line.

16. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 14, wherein the set of instructions for entering the navigation mode comprises a set of instructions for displaying a walking portion of the transit route for guiding a user from a current location of the mobile device to a first transit line of the transit route.

17. A mobile device comprising:

a set of processing units; and

a non-transitory machine-readable medium storing a mapping application for execution by at least one of the processing units, the mapping application comprising;

displaying a transit map comprising a plurality of transit lines;

receiving a request to display a transit route in the transit map; and

in response to the received request, displaying the transit route by modifying portions of transit lines along the route to emphasize the portions of transit lines while modifying other transit lines not along the route to de-emphasize the transit lines not along the route.

18. The mobile device of claim 17, wherein the transit lines of the plurality of transit lines are displayed using colors that correspond to colors used by transit system providers that operate on the transit line.

19. The mobile device of claim 18, wherein the set of instructions for modifying the other transit lines to de-emphasize the other transit lines comprises a set of instructions for reducing color saturation of the other transit lines that are not along the transit route.

20. The mobile device of claim 19, wherein the set of instructions for modifying the portions of transit lines along the route comprises a set of instructions for increasing at least one of size and color saturation of the portions of transit lines along the route.
