Abstract

Some embodiments provide a document viewing application with first and second document-browsing modes. The first document-browsing mode, accessed through a first UI item of several top-level UI items, displays several selectable document channel items corresponding to previously-selected document channels. Selection of one of the selectable document channel items causes the document viewing application to present a set of documents related to the document channel corresponding to the particular selectable item. The second document-browsing mode, accessed through a second UI item of the several top-level UI items, displays several selectable document panes corresponding to documents related to several of the previously-selected channels.

Claims

1. For a document viewing application, a method comprising:

providing a first document-browsing mode, accessed through a first user interface (UI) item of a plurality of top-level UI items, that displays a plurality of selectable document channel items corresponding to previously-selected document channels, wherein selection of one of the selectable document channel items causes the document viewing application to present a set of documents related to the document channel corresponding to the particular selectable item;

providing a second document-browsing mode, accessed through a second UI item of the plurality of top-level UI items, that displays a plurality of selectable document panes corresponding to documents related to a plurality of the previously-selected channels.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the document channel items displayed in the first document-browsing mode comprise document channel items corresponding to at least one topic channel and at least one source channel.

The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of selectable document panes is a first plurality of selectable document panes, wherein the application presents the set of documents, in response to selection of one of the selectable document channel items, by displaying a second plurality of selectable document panes corresponding to documents related to the document channel corresponding to the particular selectable item.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the first plurality of selectable document panes are displayed in a same format as the second plurality of selectable document panes.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein each document pane comprises at least (i) a summary or excerpt of the corresponding document and (ii) source information that indicates a source of the corresponding document.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein a particular document pane comprises an image displayed based on an image retrieved from a source of the corresponding document, wherein the displayed image is cropped starting at a distance from a top of the retrieved image that varies based on an aspect ratio of the retrieved image.

7. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing a document viewing application for execution by a set of processing units, the document viewing application comprising sets of instructions for:

displaying a summary feed comprising a plurality of selectable document panes that each correspond to a different document, wherein a first subset of the documents are defined in a first format specific to the document viewing application and a second subset of the documents are defined in a web-based format;

upon receiving a selection of a document pane corresponding to a document in the first subset, displaying a layout for the selected document that is dynamically generated according to the first format; and

upon receiving a selection of a document pane corresponding to a document in the second subset, displaying an intermediate layout for the selected document, wherein certain types of input when the intermediate layout is displayed cause the document viewing application to display a layout for the full selected web-based document.

8. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 7, wherein the intermediate layout is generated from an RSS feed for the selected document.

9. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 8, wherein when the RSS feed is a rich content feed, the intermediate layout is generated using data from the rich content feed according to a template specific to the document viewing application.

10. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 7, wherein the documents in the first subset are formatted in the first format by a publisher of the documents and provided directly from the publisher for the document viewing application.

11. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 7, wherein the documents in the second subset are retrieved from websites.

12. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 7, wherein the certain type of input comprises selection of an affordance for viewing the full selected web-based document.

13. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 7, wherein the certain type of input comprises a swipe gesture over the intermediate layout.

14. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 7, wherein the program further comprises sets of instructions for:

displaying a layout for a selected document; and

displaying, at the end of the full selected web-based document, (i) a first scrolling element comprising selectable items corresponding to documents related to the selected document and (ii) a second scrolling element comprising selectable items corresponding to documents having a same source as the selected document.

15. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing a document viewing application for execution by a set of processing units, the document viewing application comprising a graphical user interface (GUI), the GUI comprising:

a display area for displaying a plurality of document panes that each correspond to a different document, each document pane comprising a set of document data for the corresponding document; and

a user interface (UI) toolbar accessible through any of the document panes and displayed when accessed through one of the document panes, wherein the UI toolbar comprises a plurality of UI items for applying operations to a particular document that corresponds to the document pane through which the UI toolbar is accessed.

16. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15, wherein each UI item in the UI toolbar is associated with a corresponding icon that is displayed on the particular document pane when the operation associated with the UI item is applied to the particular document corresponding to the particular document pane.

17. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15, wherein the document viewing application is executed on a mobile device having a touch-enabled interface, wherein the UI toolbar is accessed by receiving a continuous touch input beginning at a particular location of any of the document panes.

18. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 17, wherein the UI toolbar is displayed so long as the touch input is continuously received, wherein one of the UI items is selected by movement of the touch input to the UI item without interrupting the continuous touch input.

19. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15, wherein the UI items comprise items for liking and disliking a document and for sharing the document.
