Abstract

System and method for performing resource allocation for a host computer cluster use resource allocation weight scores for resource nodes in a cluster resource allocation hierarchy of the host computer cluster based on the number of powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

Claims

1. A method for performing resource allocation for a host computer cluster, the method comprising:

obtaining a cluster resource allocation hierarchy of the host computer cluster; and

generating a plurality of resource allocation weight scores for a plurality of resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the number of powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

The method of claim 1, wherein generating the plurality of resource allocation weight scores for the plurality of resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the number of powered-on clients in the resource nodes comprises generating the resource allocation weight scores for the resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the number of powered-on clients in the resource nodes and the size of powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

The method of claim 1, wherein generating the plurality of resource allocation weight scores for the plurality of resource nodes comprises generating the resource allocation weight scores in proportion to the number of the powered-on clients in the resource nodes, including computing a resource allocation weight score for each of the resource nodes in proportion to the number of powered-on clients in the corresponding resource node.

The method of claim 1, wherein the resource nodes comprises a resource pool, and wherein generating the plurality of resource allocation weight scores for the plurality of resource nodes comprises computing a resource allocation weight score of the resource pool by multiplying a base allocation weight score with the number of powered-on clients in the resource pool.

The method of claim 1, wherein a first resource node of the resource nodes comprises at least one child resource node, and wherein generating the plurality of resource allocation weight scores for the plurality of resource nodes comprises computing a resource allocation weight score of the first resource node based on the total number of powered-on clients in the at least one child resource node.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the resource nodes are located at the same level of the cluster resource allocation hierarchy.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising allocating a resource to the resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the resource allocation weight scores of the resource nodes.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising allocating a resource to the resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the resource allocation weight scores of the resource nodes and the size of the powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the resource nodes comprise at least one resource pool and at least one client.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the resource nodes comprise a plurality of resource pools, wherein at least one of the resource pools comprises a client.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the powered-on clients includes a powered-on virtual machine.

12. A computer-readable storage medium containing program instructions for performing a resource allocation for a host computer cluster, wherein execution of the program instructions by one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform steps comprising:

obtaining a cluster resource allocation hierarchy of the host computer cluster; and

generating a plurality of resource allocation weight scores for a plurality of resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the number of powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein generating the plurality of resource allocation weight scores for the plurality of resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the number of powered-on clients in the resource nodes comprises generating the resource allocation weight scores for the resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the number of powered-on clients in the resource nodes and the size of powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein generating the plurality of resource allocation weight scores for the plurality of resource nodes comprises generating the resource allocation weight scores in proportion to the number of the powered-on clients in the resource nodes, including computing a resource allocation weight score for each of the resource nodes in proportion to the number of powered-on clients in the corresponding resource node.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the resource nodes comprises a resource pool, and wherein generating the plurality of resource allocation weight scores for the plurality of resource nodes comprises computing a resource allocation weight score of the resource pool by multiplying a base allocation weight score with the number of powered-on clients in the resource pool.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein a first resource node of the resource nodes comprises at least one child resource node, and wherein generating the plurality of resource allocation weight scores for the plurality of resource nodes comprises computing a resource allocation weight score of the first resource node based on the total number of powered-on clients in the at least one child resource node.

17. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the resource nodes are located at the same level of the cluster resource allocation hierarchy.

18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the steps further comprise allocating a resource to the resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the resource allocation weight scores of the resource nodes.

19. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the steps further comprise allocating a resource to the resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the resource allocation weight scores of the resource nodes and the size of the powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

20. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the resource nodes comprise at least one resource pool and at least one client.

21. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the resource nodes comprise a plurality of resource pools, wherein at least one of the resource pools comprises a client.

22. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the powered-on clients includes a powered-on virtual machine.

23. A computer system for performing resource allocation for a host computer cluster comprising:

a processor; and

a resource allocation module operably connected to the processor, wherein the resource allocation module is configured to;

obtain a cluster resource allocation hierarchy of the host computer cluster; and

generate a plurality of resource allocation weight scores for a plurality of resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the number of powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

The computer system of claim 23, wherein the resource allocation module is further configured to generate the plurality of resource allocation weight scores for the plurality of resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the number of powered-on clients in the resource nodes and the size of powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

25. The computer system of claim 23, wherein the resource allocation module is further configured to compute the resource allocation weight scores in proportion to the number of the powered-on clients in the resource nodes, and wherein the resource allocation module is further configured to compute a resource allocation weight score for each of the resource nodes in proportion to the number of powered-on clients in the corresponding resource node.

The computer system of claim 23, wherein the resource nodes comprises a resource pool, and wherein the resource allocation module is further configured to compute a resource allocation weight score of the resource pool by multiplying a base allocation weight score with the number of powered-on clients in the resource pool.

27. The computer system of claim 23, wherein a first resource node of the resource nodes comprises at least one child resource node, and wherein the resource allocation module is further configured to compute a resource allocation weight score of the first resource node based on the total number of powered-on clients in the at least one child resource node.

28. The computer system of claim 23, wherein the resource nodes are located at the same level of the cluster resource allocation hierarchy.

29. The computer system of claim 23, wherein the resource allocation module is further configured to allocate a resource to the resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the resource allocation weight scores of the resource nodes.

30. The computer system of claim 23, wherein the resource allocation module is further configured to allocate a resource to the resource nodes in the cluster resource allocation hierarchy based on the resource allocation weight scores of the resource nodes and the size of the powered-on clients in the resource nodes.

31. The computer system of claim 23, wherein the resource nodes comprise at least one resource pool and at least one client.

32. The computer system of claim 23, wherein the resource nodes comprise a plurality of resource pools, wherein at least one of the resource pools comprises a client.

33. The computer system of claim 23, wherein the powered-on clients includes a powered-on virtual machine.
