Abstract

An approach is provided for generating response frames. Incoming frames are processed by a receive controller to determine type and attributes. Based on the type and the attributes of the incoming frame, a response frame is constructed and transmitted by a transmit controller. A response frame is constructed by setting values in a frame template. A block ACK can be implemented by means of a block ACK scoreboard.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a frame receive controller;

a frame transmit controller;

a sideband channel operatively coupled to said frame receive controller and said frame transmit controller; and

response logic operable to respond to an incoming frame by;

determining one or more attributes of said incoming frame;

determining, based on said one or more attributes, whether a response frame should be transmitted;

setting one or more attributes of a response frame based on, at least in part, said one or more attributes of said incoming frame; and

transmitting the response frame within a predetermined response time;

wherein said response logic is implemented without a media access control processor.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the response logic further comprises:

constructing the response frame using one of a plurality of predefined response frame templates, each response frame having one or more blank fields.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein constructing the response frame comprises:

selecting a response frame template from said plurality of predefined response frame templates;

replacing one or more of the blank fields in the selected response frame with values selected based, at least in part on, the one or more attributes of said incoming frame.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, further comprising:

determining a duration field of the response frame based, at least in part on, the one or more attributes of said incoming frame;

setting the value of the duration field of the response frame based on said determining a duration of the response frame.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the one or more attributes of said incoming frame are selected from a list consisting of:

Source Address, Destination Address, ACK Policy, Type, Subtype, Control Frame Extension, Traffic ID (TID).

6. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a Block ACK scoreboard.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the response logic further comprises:

adjusting antenna configuration at the frame transmit controller based on, at least in part, a destination address of the response frame.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the response logic further comprises:

adjusting a power amplifier gain value at the frame transmit controller based on, at least in part, a destination address of the response frame.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a response frame duration calculation capability.
