Abstract

An embolic coil which can be used for occlusive purposes in the vasculature is described. A mandrel for manufacturing a coiled structure, and method/process for manufacturing a coiled structure is described.

Claims

1. An embolic coil for treatment of a body lumen, comprising:

an embolic coil forming a multi-planar secondary shape when unconstrained, said secondary shape comprising;

a first horizontal loop positioned at a first angle;

a first vertical loop connected to said first horizontal loop and being positioned at a second angle perpendicular to said first angle;

a first angled loop connected to said first vertical loop;

said first angled loop being oriented at a third angle that is between said first and said second angle; and

,

a second vertical loop connected to said first angled loop and being positioned at said second angle.

2. The embolic coil of claim 1, wherein said third angle is about 60 degrees relative to said first angle.

3. The embolic coil of claim 1, wherein said secondary shape further comprises:

a second horizontal loop connected to said second vertical loop and being positioned at said first angle

a third vertical loop connected to said second horizontal loop and being positioned at said second angle.

4. The embolic coil of claim 3, wherein said secondary shape further comprises:

a second angled loop connected to said third vertical loop and being angled at said third angle.

5. The embolic coil of claim 4, wherein said secondary shape further comprises:

a third horizontal loop connected to said second angled loop and being angled at said second angle.

6. A mandrel for winding an embolic coil, comprising:

an elongated core having an axis extending therealong;

a plurality of mounting elements disposed on said elongated core and each having a winding surface for winding said embolic coil;

wherein winding said embolic coil on said plurality of mounting elements creates a plurality of loops in the following pattern;

a first horizontal loop positioned at a first angle;

a first vertical loop connected to said first horizontal loop and being positioned at a second angle perpendicular to said first angle;

a first angled loop connected to said first vertical loop;

said first angled loop being oriented at a third angle that is between said first and said second angle; and

,

a second vertical loop connected to said first angled loop and being positioned at said second angle.

7. The mandrel of claim 6, wherein said plurality of mounting elements comprise at least one cylinder member having a rounded portion located around said axis of said elongated core.

8. The mandrel of claim 6, wherein said plurality of mounting elements comprise a bracket member having a post member extending generally perpendicular to said axis of said elongated core.

9. The mandrel of claim 8, wherein said post member is connected to a body portion, said body portion having a passage through which said elongated core member extends through.

10. The mandrel of claim 8, wherein said post member has a cylindrical, square shape, oval shape, an ellipsoid shape, a rectangular shape, a triangular shape, or an hourglass shape.

11. The mandrel of claim 7, wherein said cylinder member is uniformly cylindrical, ellipsoid, or oval.

12. A method of creating a secondary shape of an embolic coil, comprising:

providing a mandrel;

providing an embolic coil;

wrapping said embolic coil on said mandrel so as to create a repeating pattern of loops;

heat setting said embolic coil so as to impart said repeating pattern in said mandrel as a secondary shape;

cutting said embolic coil into portions, forming smaller embolic coils.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein said repeating pattern of loops comprises:

a first horizontal loop positioned at a first angle;

a first vertical loop connected to said first horizontal loop and being positioned at a second angle perpendicular to said first angle;

a first angled loop connected to said first vertical loop;

said first angled loop being oriented at a third angle that is between said first and said second angle; and

,

a second vertical loop connected to said first angled loop and being positioned at said second angle.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said third angle is about 60 degrees relative to said first angle.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein said repeating pattern further comprises:

a second horizontal loop connected to said second vertical loop and being positioned at said first angle

a third vertical loop connected to said second horizontal loop and being positioned at said second angle.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein said repeating pattern further comprises:

a second angled loop connected to said third vertical loop and being angled at said third angle.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein said repeating pattern further comprises:

a third horizontal loop connected to said second angled loop and being angled at said second angle.
