Abstract

Conventional internal combustion engine technology has been around for decades and historically has been the primary power source for virtually all industrial equipment. It relies on carbon-based fuels, is loud, polluting, and the machines it powers are expensive to operate and maintain. A self-contained, rechargeable battery system is provided that possesses superior power than comparable diesel and gas engines. The rechargeable battery power system generates zero emissions, is virtually maintenance free, is quiet, and recharges overnight via a standard electrical outlet. The rechargeable battery power system can be installed in new and used construction equipment (light towers, excavators, generators) and may be used wherever a source of power is required, for example, in vans and boats, and in supplemental power systems including smart grid applications. It can be safely used indoors, in neighborhoods and other locations sensitive to the side effects of internal combustion engines.

Claims

1. A rechargeable battery power system comprising:

a battery assembly having a battery housing and a battery and wherein the battery is disposed in the battery housing;

the battery has at least one module bank;

a battery management system and a battery line that connects the battery and the battery management system and a visual display connected to the battery management system;

a variable frequency motor driver connected to and powered by the battery and connected to the visual display;

an AC induction motor with motor drive lines connected to the variable frequency motor driver and the AC induction motor having an output shaft;

a battery management interface for connection to an external power source for charging the battery, and,

a throttle connected to the variable frequency motor driver so that the rate of rotation of the output shaft can be controlled by the throttle.

2. The rechargeable battery power system according to claim 1 further including an excavator that defines a battery recess and wherein the battery assembly is disposed in the battery recess and the excavator having a cab and the throttle is disposed in the cab.

The rechargeable battery power system according to claim 2 wherein the excavator has a hydraulic pump and wherein the output shaft of the AC induction motor is coupled to the hydraulic pump and the AC induction motor is capable of turning the hydraulic pump to produce a flow of a hydraulic fluid.

4. The rechargeable battery power system according to claim 1 wherein the excavator has an excavator frame that includes a support plate and the battery assembly is supported on the support plate.

5. A method of rebuilding a used piece of equipment comprising the acts of:

providing an a used piece of equipment powered by an engine and having an frame;

extracting the engine from the used piece of equipment;

modifying the frame such that it is capable of supporting a support plate and joining the support plate to the frame and the support plate for supporting a battery;

providing a battery assembly having a battery housing and a battery and disposing the battery in the battery housing and connecting the battery housing to the support plate;

providing the battery with first and second module banks and wherein the first module bank is made from a first group of modules and the second module bank is made from a second group of modules and wherein each of the first and second groups of modules are each made from individual modules and providing each individual module with individual cells and electrically connecting the cell.

installing a variable frequency motor driver and a variable frequency AC induction motor such that they are supported on a support structure affixed to the frame;

extracting a hydraulic pump and a pump cooling system for cooling hydraulic fluid pumped by the hydraulic pump from the excavator and relocating and installing the hydraulic pump and the pump cooling system on the frame such that the hydraulic pump and a pump cooling system are relocated on the excavator;

providing a battery management system;

connecting the battery management system and the variable frequency AC driver to the battery and connecting the variable frequency AC driver to a variable frequency induction motor powered by the battery;

providing a cab and joining the cab with the frame;

providing a throttle and connecting the throttle to the variable frequency motor driver and disposing the throttle in the cab;

providing a visual display and connecting the visual display to the battery management system and the variable frequency motor driver; and

,

disposing the visual display in the cab.

6. The method of rebuilding a used piece of equipment according to claim 5 further comprising the acts of providing a separator support plate and disposing the separator support plate in the battery housing such that it separates the first and second module banks from one another.

7. The method of rebuilding a used piece of equipment according to claim 5 further including providing a service provider entity wherein the service provider purchases the used piece of equipment and removes the internal combustion engine and installs a battery powered system and sells the used piece of equipment having the battery powered system to a consumer entity.
