Abstract

A network capable of being used in a datacenter is described. The network can comprise a set of optical fiber rings, wherein each optical fiber ring carries data traffic on multiple wavelengths, and wherein each optical fiber ring is partitioned into multiple sectors. In some embodiments, each sector in the multiple sectors can comprise: (1) only one add-wavelength-selective-switch (add-WSS) communicatively coupled to only one optical fiber ring in the set of optical fiber rings, wherein the only one add-WSS is used for sending all data traffic that originates from the sector and is destined to other sectors; (2) an add-electro-optical-switch (add-EOS) communicatively coupled to the add-WSS; (3) a set of drop-wavelength-selective-switches (drop-WSSs) communicatively coupled to the set of optical fiber rings, wherein the set of drop-WSSs are used for receiving data traffic from other sectors; and (4) a drop-electro-optical-switch (drop-EOS) communicatively coupled to a drop-WSS in the set of drop-WSSs.

Claims

1. A network, comprising:

a set of optical fiber rings, wherein each optical fiber ring carries data traffic on multiple wavelengths, and wherein each optical fiber ring is partitioned into multiple sectors; and

each sector in the multiple sectors comprising;

an add-wavelength-selective-switch (add-WSS) communicatively coupled via a passive optical coupler to an one optical fiber ring in the set of optical fiber rings, wherein the add-WSS is used for sending all data traffic that originates from the sector and is destined to other sectors;

an add-electro-optical-switch (add-EOS) communicatively coupled to the add-WSS;

a set of drop-wavelength-selective-switches (drop-WSSs) communicatively coupled via a set of passive optical couplers to the set of optical fiber rings, wherein the set of drop-WSSs are used for receiving data traffic from other sectors; and

a drop-electro-optical-switch (drop-EOS) communicatively coupled to a drop-WSS in the set of drop-WSSs.

2. The network of claim 1, wherein each sector in the multiple sectors further comprises a set of aggregation switches, wherein each aggregation switch in the set of aggregation switches is communicatively coupled with the add-EOS and the drop-EOS.

3. The network of claim 2, wherein each sector in the multiple sectors further comprises a set of edge switches, wherein each edge switch in the set of edge switches is communicatively coupled with each aggregation switch in the set of aggregation switches.

4. The network of claim 3, wherein each sector in the multiple sectors further comprises a set of servers, wherein each server in the set of servers is communicatively coupled to at least one edge switch in the set of edge switches.

5. The network of claim 1, wherein the set of optical fiber rings comprises clockwise optical fiber rings and counter-clockwise optical fiber rings, wherein the set of optical fiber rings are configured to perform protection switching upon detecting a failure.

6. A datacenter, comprising:

a set of servers; and

a datacenter backplane communicatively coupled to the set of servers, wherein the datacenter backplane comprises;

a set of optical fiber rings, wherein each optical fiber ring carries data traffic on multiple wavelengths, and wherein each optical fiber ring is partitioned into multiple sectors; and

each sector in the multiple sectors comprising;

an add-wavelength-selective-switch (add-WSS) communicatively coupled via a passive optical coupler to an optical fiber ring in the set of optical fiber rings, wherein the add-WSS is used for sending all data traffic that originates from the sector and is destined to other sectors;

an add-electro-optical-switch (add-EOS) communicatively coupled to the add-WSS;

a set of drop-wavelength-selective-switches (drop-WSSs) communicatively coupled via a set of passive optical couplers to the set of optical fiber rings, wherein the set of drop-WSSs are used for receiving data traffic from other sectors; and

a drop-electro-optical-switch (drop-EOS) communicatively coupled to a drop-WSS in the set of drop-WSSs.

7. The datacenter of claim 6, wherein each sector in the multiple sectors further comprises a set of aggregation switches, wherein each aggregation switch in the set of aggregation switches is communicatively coupled with the add-EOS and the drop-EOS.

8. The datacenter of claim 7, wherein each sector in the multiple sectors further comprises a set of edge switches, wherein each edge switch in the set of edge switches is communicatively coupled with each aggregation switch in the set of aggregation switches.

9. The datacenter of claim 8, wherein each sector in the multiple sectors is associated with a subset of the set of servers, wherein each server in the subset of the set of servers is communicatively coupled to at least one edge switch in the set of edge switches.

10. The datacenter of claim 6, wherein the set of optical fiber rings comprises clockwise optical fiber rings and counter-clockwise optical fiber rings, wherein the set of optical fiber rings are configured to perform protection switching upon detecting a failure.

11. A datacenter, comprising:

a set of optical fiber rings, wherein each optical fiber ring carries data traffic on multiple wavelengths, and wherein each optical fiber ring is partitioned into a set of sectors; and

a set of racks, wherein each rack corresponds to a sector, wherein each rack includes a set of servers that is stacked vertically in the rack, and wherein each rack includes a set of top-of-the-rack (ToR) switches that is communicatively coupled to each server in the rack, wherein the set of ToR switches comprises;

an add-wavelength-selective-switch (add-WSS) communicatively coupled via a passive optical coupler to an optical fiber ring in the set of optical fiber rings, wherein the add-WSS is used for sending all data traffic that originates from the sector and is destined to other sectors;

an add-electro-optical-switch (add-EOS) communicatively coupled to the add-WSS;

a set of drop-wavelength-selective-switches (drop-WSSs) communicatively coupled via a set of passive optical couplers to the set of optical fiber rings, wherein the set of drop-WSSs are used for receiving data traffic from other sectors; and

a drop-electro-optical-switch (drop-EOS) communicatively coupled to a drop-WSS in the set of drop-WSSs.

12. The datacenter of claim 11, wherein the set of ToR switches further comprises a set of aggregation switches, wherein each aggregation switch in the set of aggregation switches is communicatively coupled with the add-EOS and the drop-EOS.

13. The datacenter of claim 12, wherein the set of ToR switches further comprises a set of edge switches, wherein each edge switch in the set of edge switches is communicatively coupled with each aggregation switch in the set of aggregation switches.

14. The datacenter of claim 13, wherein each server in the rack is communicatively coupled to at least one edge switch in the set of edge switches.

15. The datacenter of claim 11, wherein the set of optical fiber rings comprises clockwise optical fiber rings and counter-clockwise optical fiber rings, wherein the set of optical fiber rings are configured to perform protection switching upon detecting a failure.
