Abstract

A catheter that comprises a sheath that is connected at opposing ends to concentric tubes that move relative to each other in a manner that alternatively covers and exposes a medical device loaded onto the catheter. A portion of the sheath is arranged so as to invert upon itself so that axial movement of one tube relative to the other simultaneously moves the inversion point over or away from the device, alternatively covering or exposing the device.

20. A method of delivering an expandable medical device, the method comprising:

collapsing the medical device onto an outer tube of a delivery system, the outer tube having an outer surface for receiving the collapsed medical device thereon, the outer tube concentric with an inner member, a sheath attached to the inner member and covering at least a portion of the outer surface of the outer tube, the sheath extending from the inner member to around the distal end of the outer tube;

covering at least a portion of the medical device with the sheath, the medical device disposed between the sheath and the outer surface of the outer tube;

delivering the medical device to a target site within a patient; and

moving the inner member in a proximal direction relative to the outer tube to uncover the medical device in a distal direction.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the distal end of the outer tube comprises a smooth surface over which a portion of the sheath may slide.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the medical device is self-expanding.

23. The method of claim 20, wherein the medical device is a prosthetic heart valve.

24. The method of claim 20, wherein delivering the medical device comprises transfemorally delivering the medical device.

25. The method of claim 20, wherein delivering the medical device comprises transeptally delivering the medical device.

26. The method of claim 20, wherein delivering the medical device comprises transapically delivering the medical device.

27. The method of claim 20, wherein the delivery system comprises a catheter.

28. The method of claim 20, wherein a first end of the sheath is attached to the outer tube and a second end of the sheath is attached to the inner member such that the sheath forms an inversion point proximal of the distal end of the outer tube.

29. The method of claim 20, wherein moving the inner member in a proximal direction relative to the outer tube moves the inversion point in a distal direction to expose the medical device.

30. The method of claim 20, wherein the target site is a heart valve annulus.

31. A method of delivering an expandable prosthetic heart valve, the method comprising:

collapsing the prosthetic heart valve onto an outer tube of a delivery catheter, the outer tube having an outer surface for receiving the collapsed prosthetic heart valve thereon, the outer tube concentric with an inner member, a sheath attached to the inner member and covering at least a portion of the outer surface of the outer tube, the sheath extending from the inner member to around the distal end of the outer tube;

covering at least a portion of the prosthetic heart valve with the sheath, the prosthetic heart valve disposed between the sheath and the outer surface of the outer tube;

delivering the prosthetic heart valve to a heart valve annulus within a patient; and

moving the inner member in a proximal direction relative to the outer tube to uncover the prosthetic heart valve in a distal direction, thereby permitting the expansion and deployment of the prosthetic heart valve within the heart valve annulus.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the distal end of the outer tube comprises a smooth surface over which a portion of the sheath may slide.

33. The method of claim 31, wherein the prosthetic heart valve is self-expanding.

34. The method of claim 31, wherein delivering the prosthetic heart valve comprises transfemorally delivering the prosthetic heart valve.

35. The method of claim 31, wherein delivering the prosthetic heart valve comprises transeptally delivering the prosthetic heart valve.

36. The method of claim 31, wherein delivering the prosthetic heart valve comprises transapically delivering the prosthetic heart valve.

37. The method of claim 31, wherein a first end of the sheath is attached to the outer tube and a second end of the sheath is attached to the inner member such that the sheath forms an inversion point proximal of the distal end of the outer tube.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein moving the inner member in a proximal direction relative to the outer tube moves the inversion point in a distal direction to expose the prosthetic heart valve.

39. The method of claim 31, wherein the inner member is a tube.
