Abstract

A drug delivery device includes a blunt cannula and a reservoir. The blunt cannula has a cylindrical wall that defines an axial passage between a first end and a second end of the blunt cannula. The wall has at least a first tapered region at the first end to define an opening in fluid communication with the axial passage and adapted at the first end to resist interruption of fluid flow through the axial passage and out of the first end of the blunt cannula. The reservoir is connected to the second end of the blunt cannula

Claims

1. A drug delivery device comprising:

a blunt cannula having a cylindrical wall that defines an axial passage between a first end and a second end of the blunt cannula, the wall having at least a first tapered region at the first end to define an opening in fluid communication with the axial passage and adapted at the first end to resist interruption of fluid flow through the axial passage and out of the first end of the blunt cannula; and

a reservoir connected to the second end of the blunt cannula.

2. The drug delivery device according to claim 1, wherein the blunt cannula has at least one side port formed in the wall of the blunt cannula at the first end.

3. The drug delivery device according to claim 2, wherein the at least side port comprises a pair of side ports.

4. The drug delivery device according to claim 3, wherein the pair of side ports are aligned with each other across the axial passage.

5. The drug delivery device according to claim 2, wherein the at least one side port comprises a circular opening formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage.

6. The drug delivery device according to claim 2, wherein the at least one side port comprises an elongated slit formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage.

7. The drug delivery device according to claim 2, wherein the at least one side port comprises an elongated slot formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage.

8. The drug delivery device according to claim 2, wherein the at least one side port is formed in the first end of the blunt cannula distal from the first tapered region.

9. The drug delivery device according to claim 1, wherein the first tapered region comprises at least one bevel.

10. The drug delivery device according to claim 9, wherein the first tapered region comprises only one bevel.

19. The drug delivery device according to claim 1, further comprising an auto-injector, microinfuser, or infusion pump having a barrel and a plunger disposed within the barrel to define the reservoir.

20. The drug delivery device according to claim 1, further comprising a housing, the housing having an opening through which the cannula is disposed in an operative state, the opening having a diameter that is less than twice the diameter of the cannula.

48. The drug delivery device according to claim 3, wherein each side port of the pair of side ports comprises a respective circular opening formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage.

49. The drug delivery device according to claim 48, wherein the pair of side ports are aligned with each other across the axial passage.

50. The drug delivery device according to claim 49, wherein each side port of the pair of side ports is formed in the first end of the blunt cannula distal from the first tapered region.

51. The drug delivery device according to claim 1, wherein disposed in the reservoir is a volume of one of:

(i) an erythropoiesis stimulating agent, (ii) a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, (iii) a TNF blocker, (iv) a pegylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, (v) an interleukin-receptor specific antibody, (vi) an IGF-receptor specific antibody, (vii) a TGF-specific antibody, (viii) insulin, (ix) GLP-1, and (x) a sclerostin antibody.

21. A drug delivery device comprising:

a blunt cannula having a cylindrical wall that defines an axial passage between a closed first end and a second end of the blunt cannula, the wall having a first tapered region at the first end with at least one side opening in fluid communication with the axial passage adapted to resist interruption of fluid flow through the axial passage and out of the first end of the blunt cannula; and

a reservoir connected to the second end of the blunt cannula.

22. The drug delivery device according to claim 21, further comprising a housing, the housing having an opening through which the cannula is disposed in an operative state, the opening having a diameter that is less than twice the diameter of the cannula.

52. The drug delivery device according to claim 21, wherein the at least one side opening comprises a pair of side openings.

53. The drug delivery device according to claim 52, wherein the pair of side openings are aligned with each other across the axial passage.

54. The drug delivery device according to claim 21, wherein the at least one side opening comprises a circular opening formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage.

55. The drug delivery device according to claim 21, wherein the at least one side opening comprises an elongated slit formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage.

56. The drug delivery device according to claim 21, wherein the at least one side opening comprises an elongated slot formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage.

57. The drug delivery device according to claim 21, wherein the at least one side opening is formed in the first end of the blunt cannula distal from the first tapered region.

58. The drug delivery device according to claim 21, wherein the first tapered region comprises at least one bevel.

59. The drug delivery device according to claim 52, wherein each side opening of the pair of side opening comprises a respective circular opening formed in the wall to permit flow transverse to the axial passage.

60. The drug delivery device according to claim 59, wherein the pair of side openings are aligned with each other across the axial passage.

61. The drug delivery device according to claim 60, wherein each side opening of the pair of side openings is formed in the first end of the blunt cannula distal from the first tapered region.

62. The drug delivery device according to claim 21, further comprising an auto-injector, microinfuser, or infusion pump having a barrel and a plunger disposed within the barrel to define the reservoir.

63. The drug delivery device according to claim 21, wherein disposed in the reservoir is a volume of one of:

(i) an erythropoiesis stimulating agent, (ii) a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, (iii) a TNF blocker, (iv) a pegylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, (v) an interleukin-receptor specific antibody, (vi) an IGF-receptor specific antibody, (vii) a TGF-specific antibody, (viii) insulin, (ix) GLP-1, and (x) a sclerostin antibody.
