SYSTEM AND METHOD TO PREVENT VEHICLE FAILURES ON PUBLIC ROADWAYS
First Claim
1. A method to prevent vehicle failures on public roadways, comprising:
- receiving performance data from a plurality of vehicles, the performance data for each vehicle of the plurality of vehicles including episodic event data and periodic operational data collected by at least one data-capturing diagnostic device electrically coupled to the respective vehicle;
based on the received episodic event data, automatically determining that a specific vehicle has either a first specific fault condition or a first developing fault condition that will become the first specific fault condition;
based on an accumulation over time of the received periodic operational data, automatically determining that the specific vehicle has either a second specific fault condition or a second developing fault condition that will become the second specific fault condition;
after automatically determining that at least one specific fault condition is present or at least one developing fault condition is present, generating a service recommendation for the specific vehicle;
upon generating the service recommendation for the specific vehicle, selecting a plurality of vehicle service vendors to be pre-qualified vehicle service vendors, the selection based in part on the at least one specific fault condition or the at least one developing fault condition;
upon generating the service recommendation for the specific vehicle, automatically transmitting data representing the generated service recommendation to the plurality of pre-qualified vehicle service vendors;
in response to automatically transmitting the data representing the generated service recommendation to the plurality of pre-qualified vehicle service vendors, receiving at least one offer to provide service from at least one of the plurality of pre-qualified vehicle service vendors; and
communicating the at least one offer to provide service to an operator of the specific vehicle.

Abstract
A system prevents vehicle failures on public roadways. The system receives performance data from a plurality of vehicles, which includes episodic event data and periodic operational data collected on-board each respective vehicle. Based on the episodic event data, a first specific fault condition or a first developing fault condition is automatically determined. Based on an accumulation over time of the received periodic operational data, a second specific fault condition or a second developing fault condition is automatically determined. The system generates a service recommendation for the specific vehicle from the determined specific or developing fault condition, and upon generating the service recommendation, the system selects a plurality of pre-qualified vehicle service vendors. Based on the service recommendation, the system solicits and receives at least one offer to provide service from at least one of the plurality of pre-qualified vehicle service vendors, and the system communicates the offer to provide service to an operator of the specific vehicle.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium whose stored contents configure a computing system to perform a method to schedule service for a specific vehicle, the method comprising:
-
receiving performance data from a plurality of vehicles, the performance data for each vehicle of the plurality of vehicles including episodic event data and periodic operational data collected by at least one data-capturing diagnostic device electrically coupled to the respective vehicle; based on the received data, automatically determining that a specific vehicle has either a specific fault condition or a developing fault condition; generating a service recommendation for the specific vehicle, the service recommendation representing one or both of the specific fault condition and the developing fault condition; identifying a plurality of pre-qualified vehicle service vendors based at least in part on the specific fault condition or the developing fault condition; soliciting a bid to provide service from each one of the identified plurality of pre-qualified vehicle service vendors; communicating received bid information from one or more of the solicited plurality of pre-qualified vehicle service vendors to an operator of the specific vehicle. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16)

17. A vehicle service coordination system, comprising:
-
a network based computing system arranged to reduce the incidence of vehicle failures on public roadways; and at least one communication mechanism coupled to the network based computing system and arranged to communicate with a plurality of vehicles and a plurality of remote service vendor computing systems, wherein the network based computing system is arranged to reduce the incidence of vehicle failures on public roadways by; repeatedly communicating with a plurality of vehicles, the communication including receipt of performance data from each vehicle of the plurality of vehicles wherein the performance data includes episodic event data, periodic operational data, or episodic event data and periodic operational data; when episodic event data is received, automatically determining that a specific vehicle has a specific fault condition; when periodic operational data is accumulated over time, automatically determining from the accumulated periodic operational data that the specific vehicle has a developing fault condition; generating a service recommendation for the specific vehicle based on either the specific fault condition or the developing fault condition; based the upon generated service recommendation for the specific vehicle, selecting pre-qualified vehicle service vendors based in part on the specific fault condition or the developing fault condition that caused the generation of the service recommendation for the specific vehicle; automatically transmitting data representing the generated service recommendation to the selected pre-qualified vehicle service vendors; receiving at least one offer to provide service from at least one of the pre-qualified vehicle service vendors; and communicating the at least one offer to provide service to an operator of the specific vehicle. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20)
