Televisions Or Output Controllers That Support A Wired Interface And A Wireless Interface For Connecting To A Local Area Network For Receiving Digital Content
First Claim
1. A wireless output device that is associated, at least in part, with a television for connecting to a local area network, the wireless output device includes:
- an interface for interacting with a user;
operating system software for managing application software at the wireless output device;
one or more processors for executing software that includes at least part of the operating system software; and
an Ethernet interface for the wireless output device to connect to a local area network, wherein the wireless output device is configured for;
(1) establishing, via the Ethernet interface, a wired connection to a local area network;
(2) establishing, via the established wired connection in (1), a communication connection with a mobile information apparatus that is within the same local area network in (1); and
(3) receiving, via the established communication connection in (2), digital content for rendering at least part of the digital content at the television; and
wherein the wireless output device that is associated, at least in part, with a television further includes one or more wireless communication units, at least one wireless communication unit of the one or more wireless communication units is configured to be compatible, at least partly, with at least one protocol within IEEE 802.11 wireless standards for establishing a wireless local area network connection, and the wireless output device is further configured for;
(i) receiving, via the user interface and from the user, security information or authentication information, the security information or authentication information includes one or more of a user name, a password, an ID number, a PIN, an IP address, a security key, a biometric, a fingerprint, or a voice, individually or in any combination; and
(ii) establishing, via the at least one wireless communication unit, a wireless local area network communication employing, at least in part, the security information or the authentication information received via the user interface from the user in (i);
wherein the wireless output device is operable for connecting the wireless output device to a local area network for receiving digital content, the connection to the local area network can be established by either;
(a) the wired connection via the Ethernet interface or (b) the wireless local area communication, via the at least one wireless communication unit.

Abstract
An output device, such as a television or an output controller, that includes a wired interface and a wireless interface for connecting to a local area network is herein disclosed and enabled. The wired interface includes an Ethernet connection, and the wireless interface includes a wireless communication unit that is compatible with at least one protocol within IEEE 802.11 standards for connecting to a wireless local area network. For added security, the output device may include a user interface to allow the user of the output device to enter a password or security code for accessing the wireless local area network. After connecting to the local area network, whether by wired connection or by wireless communication, the output device is subsequently configured for receiving digital content from a server over the Internet or for connecting to a mobile information apparatus that is within the same network.
