Abstract

A vascular prosthesis is described, having blunted wire ends. The blunted wire ends can take on a variety of configurations including end caps, bent ends, curved ends, or eyelets. The novel ends provide a smooth surface to contact the blood vessel walls thereby reducing the risk of trauma during placement of the prosthesis.

Claims

1. A vascular prosthesis comprising:

a plurality of wires woven together to form a tubular shape with a plurality of loops on each end of the tubular shape;

wherein said plurality of loops are formed from a first wire end connected to a second wire end such that said first wire end and said second wire end create a blunted tip.

2. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said blunted tip further comprises an end cap.

3. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said blunted tip further comprises a metal tube positioned and welded onto said first wire end and said second wire end so as to create an end cap.

4. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said vascular prosthesis comprises an outer layer and an inner layer.

5. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said first wire end and said second wire end are symmetrically bent towards each other and are welded together to form said blunted tip.

6. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said first wire end includes a bend and said second wire end is straight, such that said bend forms said blunted tip.

7. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said first wire end and said second wire end form rounded curved portions that are welded to each other.

8. The vascular prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said blunted tip further comprises wire ends formed into an eyelet shape.

9. A vascular prosthesis comprising:

a plurality of wires woven together to form a tubular shape with a plurality of wires extending from each end of the tubular shape;

wherein each of said plurality of wires extending from an end of said tubular shape connects to another wire of said plurality of wires, thereby creating a loop with a blunt connection point.

10. The vascular prosthesis of claim 9, wherein said blunt connection point is an end cap.

11. The vascular prosthesis of claim 10, wherein said end cap further comprises a metal tube welded onto said two of said plurality of wires.

12. The vascular prosthesis of claim 9, wherein said blunt connection point comprises two symmetrically bent wire ends that are positioned adjacent to each other and welded together.

13. The vascular prosthesis of claim 9, wherein said blunt connection point comprises a first wire having a first length and a second wire having a second length that is shorter than said first length, wherein said first wire includes a bent region near its end that is connected to said second wire.

14. The vascular prosthesis of claim 9, wherein a first wire and a second wire of said plurality of wires form rounded, curved portions that overlap with and are welded to each other.

15. The vascular prosthesis of claim 9, wherein said blunt connection point comprises wire ends formed into an eyelet shape.

16. A method of making a vascular prosthesis, comprising:

braiding a tubular portion with a plurality of wires;

positioning two of said plurality of wires against each other;

positioning a crimp structure over said two of said plurality of wires;

welding said crimp structure to create a single cap member terminating said two of said plurality of wires.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein said positioning a crimp structure is followed by trimming said two of said plurality of wires to a location adjacent said crimp structure.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein said crimp structure is a metal tube.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein each of said free ends of said plurality of wires are terminated with said cap members.
