Abstract

A wireless power transmission system is presented. In some embodiments, a transmission unit includes a first inductor with a center tap, a first end tap, and a second end tap; a pre-regulator coupled to provide current to the center tap; a switching circuit coupled to the first end tap and the second end tap, the switching circuit alternately coupling the first end tap and the second end tap to ground at a frequency; and a resonant circuit magnetically coupled to the first inductor, the resonant circuit wirelessly transmitting power. In some embodiments, the switching circuit can be formed of FETs. The current provided to the center tap can be controlled in response to current sensors.

Claims

1. A resonant transmission unit, comprising:

a first inductor with a center tap, a first end tap and a second end tap;

a first transistor coupled between the first end tap and a ground;

a second transistor coupled between the second end tap and the ground;

a pre-regulator coupled to provide current to the center tap; and

a resonant circuit magnetically coupled to the first inductor,

wherein gates of the first transistor and the second transistor are driven to transmit power with the resonant circuit.

2. The transmission unit of claim 1, wherein the resonant circuit includes a second inductor magnetically coupled to the first inductor, a coil, and a capacitor.

3. The transmission unit of claim 1, further including a third inductor coupled between the pre-regulator and the center tap and capacitors coupled across the first transistor and the second transistor.

4. The transmission unit of claim 1, wherein the pre-regulator includes a buck regulator to provide current to the center tap.

5. The transmission unit of claim 1, further including a switch control coupled to gates of the first transistor and the second transistor, the switch control switching the first transistor and the second transistor at a frequency at or near the resonant frequency of the resonant circuit

6. The transmission unit of claim 5, wherein the frequency is a fixed frequency.

7. The transmission unit of claim 5, wherein the frequency is adjustable.

8. The transmission unit of claim 1, further including a first current sensor coupled to monitor a current in the resonant circuit, wherein the pre-regulator adjusts the current to the center tap responsive to the current in the resonant circuit.

9. The transmission unit of claim 8, further including a second current sensor coupled to sense current to the center tap, wherein the pre-regulator is responsive to the sensed current to the center tap.

10. The transmission unit of claim 1, wherein the pre-regulator includes

a current error amplifier;

a first current loop, the first current loop including a current amplifier that amplifies a difference between signals from the second current sensor and provides a signal to the current error amplifier;

a second current loop, the second current loop including a differential amplifier amplifying a signal from the first current sensor and providing a second signal to the current error amplifier;

a comparison pulse wave amplifier receiving an output signal from the current error amplifier and a ramp signal; and

a driver that drives a transistor pair to supply power to an inductor capacitor pair while output of the current error amplifier exceeds the ramp signal.

11. The transmission unit of claim 10, wherein at least one of the first current loop and the second current loop includes average current mode control.

12. A transmission unit, comprising:

a first inductor with a center tap, a first end tap, and a second end tap;

a pre-regulator coupled to provide current to the center tap;

a switching circuit coupled to the first end tap and the second end tap, the switching circuit alternately coupling the first end tap and the second end tap to ground at a frequency; and

a resonant circuit magnetically coupled to the first inductor, the resonant circuit wirelessly transmitting power.

13. The transmission unit of claim 12, wherein the switching circuit includes FETs.

14. The transmission unit of claim 12, wherein the frequency is a fixed frequency.

15. The transmission unit of claim 12, wherein the frequency is a variable frequency.

16. The transmission unit of claim 12, further including

a first current sensor coupled to generate a first signal in response to current in the resonant circuit,

wherein the pre-regulator provides current to the center tap responsive to the first signal.

17. The transmission unit of claim 16, wherein the pre-regulator provides average current mode control based on the first signal.

18. The transmission unit of claim 12, further including

a second current sensor coupled to generate a second signal in response to current through the switching circuit,

wherein the pre-regulator provides current to the center tap responsive to the second signal.

19. The transmission unit of claim 18, wherein the pre-regulator provides average current mode control based on the second signal.

20. A method of transmitting power, comprising:

providing current to a center tap of a first inductor;

alternately coupling a first end of the first inductor and a second end of the first inductor to ground at a frequency; and

magnetically coupling a resonant circuit with the first inductor.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein providing current to the center tap comprises:

sensing a current in the resonant circuit; and

adjusting the current to the center tap in response to the current in the resonant circuit.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein adjusting the current to the center tap in response to the current in the resonant circuit includes averaging the current in the resonant circuit to provide average current mode control.

23. The method of claim 20, wherein providing current to the center tap comprises:

sensing a current through a switching circuit coupled to the first end and the second end of the first inductor; and

adjusting the current to the center tap in response to the current in the switching circuit.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein adjusting the current to the center tap in response to the current in the switching circuit includes averaging the current in the switching circuit to provide average current mode control.
