Abstract

A power control system includes a battery, a battery power inverter configured to control an amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery, a photovoltaic power inverter configured to control a power output of a photovoltaic field, and a controller. The power outputs of the battery power inverter and the photovoltaic power inverter combine at a point of interconnection. The controller adjusts a setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter in response to a determination that the total power at the point of interconnection exceeds a point of interconnection power limit.

Claims

1. A power control system comprising:

a battery configured to store and discharge electric power;

a battery power inverter configured to control an amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery;

a photovoltaic power inverter configured to control a power output of a photovoltaic field, wherein the power outputs of the battery power inverter and the photovoltaic power inverter combine at a point of interconnection; and

a controller configured to determine a total power at the point of interconnection and adjust a setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter in response to a determination that the total power at the point of interconnection exceeds a point of interconnection power limit.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the photovoltaic power inverter is configured to convert a DC power output of the photovoltaic field to an AC photovoltaic power output; and

the battery power inverter is configured to convert a DC power output of the battery into an AC battery power output.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein:

the AC photovoltaic power output and the AC battery power output combine to form the total power at the point of interconnection; and

the total power at the point of interconnection is provided to an energy grid.

The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to generate setpoints for the battery power inverter and the photovoltaic field power inverter to control an amount of electric power output of the photovoltaic field and the amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to determine the total power at the point of interconnection by summing a setpoint for the battery power inverter and the setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to control the amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery by:

setting a setpoint for the battery power inverter to a negative number causing the battery power inverter to charge the battery; and

setting the setpoint for the battery power inverter to a positive number causing the battery power inverter to discharge the battery.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to determine the total power at the point of interconnection by:

adding the amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery to the power output of the photovoltaic field if the battery power inverter is discharging the battery; and

subtracting the amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery from the power output of the photovoltaic field if the battery power inverter is charging the battery.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to adjust the setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter by:

calculating a difference between a setpoint for the battery power inverter and the total power at the point of interconnection; and

adjusting the setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter to be equal to the difference.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to maintain the setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter in response to a determination that the total power at the point of interconnection does not exceed the point of interconnection power limit.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to:

compare a setpoint for the battery power inverter to a battery rate of discharge limit and to a battery rate of charge limit;

adjust the setpoint for the battery power inverter to be equal to the battery rate of discharge limit in response to a determination that the setpoint for the battery power inverter exceeds the battery discharge limit; and

adjust the setpoint for the battery power inverter to the battery rate of charge limit in response to a determination that the setpoint for the battery power inverter exceeds the battery rate of charge rate limit.

11. A method for operating a power control system, the method comprising:

using battery power inverter to control an amount of electric power stored or discharged from a battery;

using a photovoltaic power inverter to control a power output of a photovoltaic field;

combining power outputs of the battery power inverter and the photovoltaic power inverter at a point of interconnection;

determining a total power at the point of interconnection; and

adjusting a setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter in response to a determination that the total power at the point of interconnection exceeds a point of interconnection power limit.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

using the photovoltaic power inverter to convert a DC power output of the photovoltaic field to an AC photovoltaic power output; and

using the battery power inverter to convert a DC power output of the battery into an AC battery power output.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein combining the power outputs of the battery power inverter and the photovoltaic power inverter comprises combining the AC photovoltaic power output and the AC battery power output to forms the total power at the point of interconnection;

the method further comprising providing the total power at the point of interconnection to an energy grid.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising generating setpoints for the battery power inverter and the photovoltaic field power inverter to control an amount of electric power output of the photovoltaic field and the amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein determining the total power at the point of interconnection comprises summing a setpoint for the battery power inverter and the setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein controlling the amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery comprises:

setting a setpoint for the battery power inverter to a negative number causing the battery power inverter to charge the battery; and

setting the setpoint for the battery power inverter to a positive number causing the battery power inverter to discharge the battery.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein determining the total power at the point of interconnection comprises:

adding the amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery to the power output of the photovoltaic field if the battery power inverter is discharging the battery; and

subtracting the amount of the electric power stored or discharged from the battery from the power output of the photovoltaic field if the battery power inverter is charging the battery.

18. The method of claim 11, adjusting the setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter comprises:

calculating a difference between a setpoint for the battery power inverter and the total power at the point of interconnection; and

adjusting the setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter to be equal to the difference.

19. The method of claim 11, further comprising maintaining the setpoint for the photovoltaic power inverter in response to a determination that the total power at the point of interconnection does not exceed the point of interconnection power limit.

20. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

comparing a setpoint for the battery power inverter to a battery rate of discharge limit and to a battery rate of charge limit;

adjusting the setpoint for the battery power inverter to be equal to the battery rate of discharge limit in response to a determination that the setpoint for the battery power inverter exceeds the battery discharge limit; and

adjusting the setpoint for the battery power inverter to the battery rate of charge limit in response to a determination that the setpoint for the battery power inverter exceeds the battery rate of charge rate limit.
