Abstract

A removable battery compartment for use with a smoke detector having a first connector portion configured to receive power from a battery. The battery compartment includes an interior chamber configured to house the battery and a second connector portion configured to be removably coupled to the first connector portion. The second connector portion has electrical connections configured to supply power from the battery to the first connector portion of the smoke detector.

Claims

1. A smoke detector comprising:

a housing comprising a connector portion;

a removable battery compartment removably coupled to the connector portion, the battery compartment being configured to house a battery and electrically connect the battery with the connector portion; and

a smoke alarm system housed inside the housing and electrically connected to the connector portion, the smoke alarm system being configured to detect smoke and sound an alarm when smoke is detected, the connector portion being configured to receive power from the battery and supply the power to the smoke alarm system when the battery compartment is coupled to the connector portion.

2. The smoke detector of claim 1, wherein the battery compartment further comprises the battery non-removably housed therein.

3. The smoke detector of claim 2, wherein the battery is molded inside the battery compartment when the battery compartment is constructed.

4. The smoke detector of claim 1, wherein the battery compartment is light bulb shaped.

5. The smoke detector of claim 1, wherein the battery compartment comprises a door configured to be selectively opened to replace the battery.

6. The smoke detector of claim 1, wherein the battery compartment comprises a cover configured to be selectively removed to replace the battery.

7. The smoke detector of claim 1, wherein the connector portion comprises inside threads, and

the battery compartment comprises outside threads configured to be threaded into the inside threads of the connector portion to thereby couple the battery compartment to the connector portion.

8. The smoke detector of claim 1, wherein the connector portion comprises pegs,

the battery compartment comprises slots configured to receive the pegs, and

the battery compartment is configured to be rotated with the pegs received inside the slots to thereby couple the battery compartment to the connector portion.

9. The smoke detector of claim 1, wherein the battery compartment comprises a pin and a conductive ring,

the connector portion comprises a first contact configured to receive and form an electrical connection with the pin, and

the connector portion comprises a different second contact configured to form an electrical connection with the conductive ring.

10. The smoke detector of claim 1 for use with a light bulb removal tool, wherein the battery compartment is configured to be removed from the connector portion of the housing by the light bulb removal tool.

11. The smoke detector of claim 1, wherein the battery compartment comprises a light configured to indicate when the battery should be changed.

12. The smoke detector of claim 11, wherein the battery compartment comprises a circuit configured to illuminate the light when a voltage available from the battery is less than a predetermined amount.

13. A battery compartment for use with a smoke detector comprising a first connector portion configured to receive power from a battery, the battery compartment comprising:

an interior chamber configured to house the battery; and

a second connector portion configured to be removably coupled to the first connector portion of the smoke detector, the second connector portion comprising electrical connections configured to supply power from the battery to the first connector portion of the smoke detector.

14. The battery compartment of claim 13, further comprising:

the battery molded inside the interior chamber.

15. The battery compartment of claim 13, wherein the interior chamber is formed at least in part by a sidewall, and

the sidewall comprises a door configured to be selectively opened to replace the battery.

16. The battery compartment of claim 13, wherein the interior chamber has an opening, and

the battery compartment further comprises a cover configured to be selectively removed to replace the battery.

17. The battery compartment of claim 13 for use with the first connector portion of the smoke detector comprising inside threads, wherein the second connector portion comprises outside threads configured to be threaded into the inside threads of the first connector portion to thereby couple the battery compartment to the smoke detector.

18. The battery compartment of claim 13 for use with the first connector portion of the smoke detector comprising pegs, wherein the second connector portion comprises slots configured to receive the pegs, and

the battery compartment is configured to be rotated with the pegs received inside the slots to thereby couple the battery compartment to the first connector portion.

19. The battery compartment of claim 13 for use with the first connector portion of the smoke detector comprising first and second contacts, wherein the second connector portion comprises a pin configured to be received in and form an electrical connection with the first contact, and

the second connector portion comprises a conductive ring configured to form an electrical connection with the second contact.

20. The battery compartment of claim 13 configured to be removed from the first connector portion of the smoke detector by a light bulb removal tool.

21. The battery compartment of claim 13, further comprising:

a light configured to indicate when the battery should be changed.

22. The battery compartment of claim 21, further comprising:

a circuit configured to illuminate the light when a voltage available from the battery is less than a predetermined amount.
