Abstract

Devices and methods are described for preparing, managing, and/or administering metered doses of substances for vaporized administration. In some embodiments, dose cartridges comprising at least one botanical substance include a heating element integrated into the cartridge in close contact with the botanical substance. In some embodiments, cartridge-mounted doses are stored in a magazine, optionally in carousel form, before use. Transport of a cartridge from a magazine to an electrically operated vaporizing chamber which activates the heating element is provided by a mechanical pickup means.

Claims

1. An inhaler device comprising a clamping chamber for an inhaler dose cartridge comprising a heat-vaporizing substance for pulmonary delivery to a user, said clamping chamber comprising:

a holder having at least two clamping members for clamping said inhaler dose cartridge therebetween such that said heat-vaporizing substance is in alignment with an air conduit of said clamping chamber; and

wherein said holder comprises a plurality of electrodes positioned to be in electrical contact with at least two electrical contact receiving regions of an electrically resistive heating element of said inhaler dose cartridge in the clamping chamber.

2. The inhaler device of claim 1, further comprising a cartridge transport configured to move the inhaler dose cartridge from a storage position into a use position in the clamping chamber.

3. The inhaler device of claim 1, wherein each of said at least two clamping members comprises a portion of said air conduit.

4. The inhaler device of claim 1, wherein at least one of said clamping members comprises at least one air seal.

5. The inhaler device of claim 1, wherein each of said clamping members comprises at least one of said plurality of electrodes.

6. The inhaler device of claim 5, wherein each of said at least one air seal is positioned to define a sealed pathway through said inhaler dose cartridge to an exit aperture.

7. The inhaler device of claim 6, wherein said electrical contact is positioned outside the at least one air seal with respect to said pathway.

8. The inhaler device of claim 7, wherein said heat-vaporizing substance is confined to the inside of said sealed pathway.

9. The inhaler device of claim 4, wherein said at least one air seal comprises an elastically deformable material.

10. The inhaler device of claim 9, wherein said elastically deformable material is polymer rubber.

11. The inhaler device of claim 2, wherein the cartridge transport comprises a dose pulling arm, shaped to interlock with a receiving region of the inhaler dose cartridge such that movement of the dose pulling arm moves said inhaler dose cartridge into said use position.

12. The inhaler device of claim 11, wherein said dose pulling arm is shaped to interlock with a receiving region of the inhaler dose cartridge such that movement of the dose pulling arm moves said inhaler dose cartridge out of said use position and into a storage position.

13. The inhaler device of claim 1, wherein said electrical contact further comprises a contact force of about 500 N.

14. The inhaler device of claim 1, wherein said plurality of electrodes is shaped to contact a curved design of said at least two electrical contact receiving regions.

15. The inhaler device of claim 14, wherein said plurality of electrodes comprises a block shaped end.

16. The inhaler device of claim 1, wherein the holder comprises the cartridge transport configured to move the inhaler dose cartridge.

17. The inhaler device of claim 1, wherein said holder comprises a body shaped and sized to engage and disengage with said cartridge transport.

18. The inhaler device of claim 17, wherein said body is cylindrical.

19. The inhaler device of claim 17, wherein said holder further comprises a slider mechanism configured to slide out of said holder and into the inhaler dose cartridge moved by said cartridge transport.

20. The inhaler device of claim 1, further comprising a dose cartridge dispenser comprising a plurality of dose cartridges within a closed container.

21. The inhaler device of claim 2, wherein said clamping chamber comprises:

a plurality of the cartridge transports each configured to move a corresponding inhaler dose cartridge; and

a plurality of holders corresponding to the plurality of cartridge transports; and

corresponding electrodes for each of the cartridge transports.
