Abstract

Video games can be improved upon by combining traditional gameplay mechanics (e.g., a player'"'"'s use of a controller) and live-action combat elements that may be measured and scored. For example, a player may fire projectiles at a target when prompted by a game, may have to dodge projectiles fired at the player as part of the game, may have to traverse the room to touch or move an object, and/or may have to strike a dummy or other object as instructed by the game. Such live-action combat aspects may be incorporated into a video game having otherwise traditional gameplay mechanics.

Claims

26. A system comprising:

a physical target;

software configured to be executed by a video game computing system to;

display a display-centric portion of a multiplayer video game on a display for a first user;

receive user instructions from the first user for directing activity in the display-centric portion of the video game;

direct activity in the display-centric portion of the video game on the display according to the user instructions from the first user;

prompt the first user to strike a physical target;

receive information from the target regarding a strike at the physical target by the first user;

receive information regarding a strike at a target by a second user, the second user involved in the multiplayer video game;

compare the strike of the first user to the strike of the second user; and

provide an advantage in the display-centric portion of the video game to the first user or the second user over the other of the first user and the second user according to the comparison.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

determine respective scores for the first user and the second user for the display-centric portion of the video game; and

determine a winner of the video game based, at least in part, on the respective scores.

28. The system of claim 27, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

determine respective scores for the first user and the second user for a live combat portion of the video game, the live-combat portion comprising the respective strikes of the first user and the second user;

wherein determining a winner of the video game is further based, at least in part, on the respective scores for the first user and the second user for the live combat portion of the video game.

29. The system of claim 26, wherein the information regarding a strike at a target by the second user is received over a network connection.

30. The system of claim 29, wherein the information regarding a strike at a target by the second user is received from a game server.

31. The system of claim 26, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

receive user instructions from the second user for directing activity in the display-centric portion of the video game; and

direct activity in the display-centric portion of the video game on the display according to the user instructions from the second user.

32. The system of claim 31, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

receive user instructions from the first user for directing activity in the display-centric portion of the video game through a first handheld controller;

receive user instructions from the second user for directing activity in the display-centric portion of the video game through a second handheld controller.

33. A system comprising:

a projectile propelling device;

software configured to be executed by a video game computing system, the video game computing system configured to be in electronic communication with the projectile propelling device, the software configured to be executed by the video game computing system to;

display a display-centric portion of a multiplayer video game on a display for a first user;

receive user instructions from the first user for directing activity in the display-centric portion of the video game; and

direct activity in the display-centric portion of the video game on the display according to the user instructions from the first user;

receive user instructions from a second user for controlling the projectile propelling device; and

control the projectile propelling device according to the user instructions from the second user.

34. The system of claim 33, wherein the user instructions from the second user are received over a network connection.

35. The system of claim 33, wherein the user instructions from the second user are received from a hand-held controller operated by the second user.

36. The system of claim 33, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

receive images of the first user captured by a camera associated with the video game computing system; and

provide the images for the second user.

37. The system of claim 33, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

determine if a physical projectile fired from the projectile propelling device hits the first user;

award points to the second user in the video game if the physical projectile fired from the projectile propelling device hits the first user.

38. A system comprising:

a physical target;

a projectile propelling device;

software configured to be executed by a video game computing system, the video game computing system configured to be in electronic communication with the projectile propelling device, the software configured to be executed by the video game computing system to;

display a display-centric portion of a multiplayer video game on a display for a first user;

receive user instructions from the first user for directing activity in the display-centric portion of the video game;

direct activity in the display-centric portion of the video game on the display according to the user instructions from the first user;

receive user instructions from a second user for controlling the projectile propelling device, the second user involved in the multiplayer videogame;

control the projectile propelling device according to the user instructions from the second user;

prompt the first user to strike a physical target;

receive information from the target regarding a strike at the physical target by the first user;

receive information regarding a strike at a target by the second user;

compare the strike of the first user to the strike of the second user; and

provide an advantage in the display-centric portion of the video game to the first user or the second user over the other of the first user and the second user according to the comparison.

39. The system of claim 38, wherein the user instructions from the second user are received over a network connection.

40. The system of claim 38, wherein the user instructions from the second user are received from a hand-held controller operated by the second user.

41. The system of claim 38, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

determine respective scores for the first user and the second user for the display-centric portion of the video game; and

determine a winner of the video game based, at least in part, on the respective scores.

42. The system of claim 38, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

determine respective scores for the first user and the second user for a live combat portion of the video game, the live-combat portion comprising the respective strikes of the first user and the second user;

wherein determining a winner of the video game is further based, at least in part, on the respective scores for the first user and the second user for the live combat portion of the video game.

43. The system of claim 38, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

receive images of the first user captured by a camera associated with the video game computing system; and

provide the images for the second user.

44. The system of claim 38, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

determine if a physical projectile fired from the projectile propelling device hits the first user;

award points to the second user in the video game if the physical projectile fired from the projectile propelling device hits the first user.

45. The system of claim 42, wherein the projectile propelling device is a first projectile propelling device, wherein the software is configured to be executed by the video game computing system further to:

receive user instructions from the first user for controlling a second projectile propelling device associated with the second user.
