Abstract

The technology presented here reduces the number of ports associated with the mobile device by combining a plurality of ports into a single multipurpose port. In one embodiment, the multipurpose port includes multiple sensors that detect various properties associated with a light beam, and a light guide that transmits the light beam between the environment outside and the multiple sensors inside the mobile device. In another embodiment, a multipurpose camera includes one or more pixels, different from the rest of the multipurpose camera pixels, where the one or more pixels receive a unique control signal. The unique control signal, sent by a processor coupled to the multipurpose camera, includes an instruction to perform an action different from the rest of the pixels, e.g., to turn on when the rest of the pixels are off. The active pixels can detect coarse properties of the light while saving mobile device battery life.

Claims

1. A mobile device comprising:

a camera operable to sense both ambient light and a proximity associated with an object, the camera comprising;

a plurality of light sensors, the plurality of light sensors operable to turn off to save power;

a first light sensor in the plurality of light sensors operable to turn on when the other light sensors in the plurality of light sensors are turned off, and when the other light sensors in the plurality of light sensors are turned off, the first light sensor operable to receive a first light beam; and

a camera controller executing instructions to send a unique control signal to the first light sensor, the unique control signal comprising an identification associated with the first light sensor, and any one of an instruction to turn on or an instruction to turn off, and the camera controller executing instructions to detect a plurality of properties associated with the first light beam, the plurality of properties comprising a frequency associated with the first light beam, and an amplitude associated with the first light beam.

2. The mobile device of claim 1, further comprising a light guide associated with the first light sensor, the light guide comprising a tunnel to transmit the first light beam to the first light sensor.

3. The mobile device of claim 1, the plurality of properties comprising any of a change in the frequency associated with the first light beam, and a change in the amplitude associated with the first light beam.

4. The mobile device of claim 1, the camera controller executing instructions to, based on the detected changes in the plurality of properties associated with the first light beam, determine any of a motion associated with the object, a gesture associated with the object, and the proximity associated with the object.

5. The mobile device of claim 1, the first light sensor comprising:

an ambient light sensor operable to receive the first light beam, and detects the plurality of properties associated with the first light beam; and

a first light guide comprising an entry point and an exit point, the exit point of the first light guide coupled to the ambient light sensor, the first light guide comprising a first tunnel operable to receive the first light beam at the entry point, and operable to transmit the first light beam to the exit point.

6. The mobile device of claim 1, the first light sensor comprising:

a proximity sensor comprising an emitter operable to emit a second light beam, and a receiver operable to receive the second light beam, and further the proximity sensor operable to detect a distance to the object;

a second light guide comprising an entry point and an exit point, the exit point of the second light guide coupled to the emitter and the receiver associated with the proximity sensor, the second light guide comprising a second tunnel operable to transmit the second light beam from the emitter associated with the proximity sensor to the entry point of the second light guide, and the second tunnel operable to transmit a third light beam from the entry point of the second light guide to the receiver associated with the proximity sensor, the third light beam comprising the second light beam reflected off the object.

7. The mobile device of claim 1, the first light sensor comprising:

a proximity sensor comprising an emitter operable to emit a second light beam, and a receiver operable to receive the second light beam, and further the proximity sensor operable to detect a distance to the object;

a second light guide comprising an entry point and an exit point, the exit point of the second light guide coupled to the emitter associated with the proximity sensor, the second light guide comprising a second tunnel operable to transmit the second light beam from the emitter associated with the proximity sensor to the entry point of the second light guide; and

a third light guide comprising the entry point and the exit point, the exit point of the third light guide coupled to the receiver associated with the proximity sensor, the third light guide comprising a third tunnel operable to transmit a third light beam from the entry point of the third light guide to the receiver associated with the proximity sensor, the third light beam comprising the second light beam reflected off the object.

8. A mobile device comprising:

a camera comprising a plurality of light sensors operable to record an image, at least one light sensor in the plurality of light sensors operable to receive a unique control signal comprising an instruction to perform an action different from a remainder of the plurality of light sensors, the action comprising any of receiving a beam of light and sending the beam of light; and

a camera controller executing instructions to send the unique control signal to the at least one light sensor, and the camera controller executing instructions to detect a plurality of properties associated with the beam of light, the plurality of properties comprising a frequency associated with the beam of light, and an amplitude associated with the beam of light.

9. The mobile device of claim 8, the at least one light sensor further comprising a light guide, the light guide comprising a material that internally reflects the beam of light.

10. The mobile device of claim 9, the light guide comprising a tunnel operable to emit a flashlight to enable the plurality of light sensors to record the image.

11. The mobile device of claim 9, further comprising:

the light guide comprising a tunnel operable to emit the beam of light, and operable to receive a reflected beam of light; and

the camera controller executing instructions to detect a time of flight associated with the beam of light.

12. The mobile device of claim 8, the camera operable to act as a fingerprint sensor, the camera comprising:

an outer layer operable to detect a contact between an object and the camera;

the plurality of light sensors operable to record the image of the object when the contact between the object and the camera is detected; and

the camera controller executing instructions to compare the image of the object with a stored image and, when the image matches the stored image, the camera controller executing instructions to authenticate the object.

13. The mobile device of claim 8, the plurality of properties comprising any of a change in the frequency associated with the beam of light, and a change in the amplitude associated with the beam of light.

14. The mobile device of claim 8, the at least one light sensor comprising:

an ambient light sensor operable to receive a first light beam, and detects the plurality of properties associated with the first light beam; and

a first light guide comprising an entry point and an exit point, the exit point of the first light guide coupled to the ambient light sensor, the first light guide comprising a first tunnel operable to receive the first light beam at the entry point, and operable to transmit the first light beam to the exit point.

15. The mobile device of claim 8, the at least one light sensor comprising:

a proximity sensor comprising an emitter operable to emit a second light beam, and a receiver operable to receive the second light beam, and further the proximity sensor operable to detect a distance to an object; and

a second light guide comprising an entry point and an exit point, the exit point of the second light guide coupled to the emitter and the receiver associated with the proximity sensor, the second light guide comprising a second tunnel operable to transmit the second light beam from the emitter associated with the proximity sensor to the entry point of the second light guide, and the second tunnel operable to transmit a third light beam from the entry point of the second light guide to the receiver associated with the proximity sensor, the third light beam comprising the second light beam reflected off the object.

16. A method to reduce a number of ports associated with a mobile device, the method comprising:

providing a camera comprising a plurality of light sensors operable to record an image;

configuring at least one light sensor in the plurality of light sensors to receive a unique control signal, the unique control signal comprising an instruction to perform an action different from a remainder of the plurality of light sensors, the action comprising any of receiving a beam of light and sending the beam of light; and

configuring a processor to send the unique control signal to the at least one light sensor, and to detect a plurality of properties associated with the beam of light, the plurality of properties comprising a frequency associated with the beam of light, and an amplitude associated with the beam of light.

17. The method of claim 16, said configuring the at least one light sensor further comprising:

providing a light guide, the light guide comprising a material that internally reflects the beam of light.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

configuring the light guide to emit a flashlight to enable the plurality of light sensors to record the image.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

configuring the light guide to emit the beam of light, and to receive a reflected beam of light; and

configuring the processor to detect a time of flight associated with the beam of light.

20. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

detecting, by an outer layer, a contact between an object and the camera;

when the contact between the object and the camera is detected, recording, by the plurality of light sensors, the image of the object;

comparing, by the processor, the image of the object with a stored image; and

and when the image matches the stored image, authenticating, by the processor, the object.

21. The method of claim 16, the plurality of properties comprising any of a change in the frequency associated with the beam of light, and a change in the amplitude associated with the beam of light.

22. The method of claim 16, said configuring the at least one light sensor comprising:

providing an ambient light sensor operable to receive a first light beam, and detects the plurality of properties associated with the first light beam; and

providing a first light guide comprising an entry point and an exit point, the exit point of the first light guide coupled to the ambient light sensor, the first light guide comprising a first tunnel operable to receive the first light beam at the entry point, and operable to transmit the first light beam to the exit point.

23. The method of claim 16, said configuring the at least one light sensor comprising:

providing a proximity sensor comprising an emitter operable to emit a second light beam, and a receiver operable to receive the second light beam, and further the proximity sensor configured to detect a distance to an object; and

providing a second light guide comprising an entry point and an exit point, the exit point of the second light guide coupled to the emitter and the receiver associated with the proximity sensor, the second light guide comprising a second tunnel operable to transmit the second light beam from the emitter associated with the proximity sensor to the entry point of the second light guide, and the second tunnel operable to transmit a third light beam from the entry point of the second light guide to the receiver associated with the proximity sensor, the third light beam comprising the second light beam reflected off the object.
