Abstract

Some embodiments include a mobile device with a light sensor overlaid under a display (e.g., a touchscreen). The mobile device can identify a command to capture an image. The mobile device can adjust at least a target portion of an opaqueness adjustable region of the display directly over the light sensor. The opaqueness adjustable region is capable of transforming from substantially opaque to substantially transparent. The mobile device can capture the image utilizing at least the light sensor while the target portion of the opaqueness adjustable region is substantially transparent.

Claims

1. A mobile device comprising:

a processor;

a transparent screen substrate;

an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display matrix underneath the transparent screen substrate; and

a camera underneath the transparent screen substrate, wherein a light sensor of the camera is pointed toward the transparent screen substrate;

wherein the OLED display matrix is capable of turning a region thereon substantially transparent in response to a command from the processor, while the mobile device is displaying a visual representation on the OLED display matrix.

The mobile device of claim 1, wherein the OLED display matrix is capable of turning the region substantially transparent by reducing light emitted from the OLED display matrix such that light passing through the OLED display matrix is captured by the camera substantially without interference from any light emitted by the OLED display matrix.

3. The mobile device of claim 1, further comprising a touch sensor panel underneath the transparent screen substrate and above the display matrix.

4. The mobile device of claim 1, wherein, in a passive state, the OLED display matrix enables visible light to pass through substantially from a first side facing the transparent screen substrate to a second side facing the camera.

5. The mobile device of claim 1, wherein the OLED display matrix includes two electrode layers sandwiching one or more organic layers.

6. The mobile device of claim 5, wherein the two electrode layers include electrically conductive and visibly transparent material.

7. The mobile device of claim 5, wherein the two electrode layers include Indium Tin Oxide (ITO).

8. The mobile device of claim 5, wherein a first electrode layer of the electrode layers is composed of a transparent material and a second electrode layer of the electrode layers is composed of a non-transparent material.

9. The mobile device of claim 8, wherein the second electrode layer of the electrode layers is composed of a metallic material.

10. The mobile device of claim 8, wherein the camera is disposed above the second electrode layer and below the organic layers.

11. The mobile device of claim 8, wherein the camera is disposed above or in plane with the second electrode layer and below the organic layers.

12. The mobile device of claim 8, wherein the second electrode layer has a real estate footprint that is sufficiently empty such that substantial amount of visible light entering through the transparent screen substrate toward the camera passes through the second electrode layer to enable the camera to take a photograph of an object beyond the transparent screen substrate.

13. A display assembly for a mobile device, the display assembly comprising:

a transparent screen substrate;

an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display matrix underneath the transparent screen substrate; and

a light sensor circuit underneath the transparent screen substrate and at least partially underneath the OLED display matrix, wherein a light sensor of the light sensor circuit is pointed toward the transparent screen substrate;

wherein the OLED display matrix includes one or more substantially transparent layers (metallic or organic) above the light sensor, and wherein, when a region of the OLED display matrix above the light sensor is not emitting light, the light sensor is capable of capturing an image on a side of the display assembly beyond the transparent screen substrate and away from the OLED display matrix, said capturing the image occurring while the mobile device is displaying a visual representation on the OLED display matrix.

14. The display assembly of claim 13, wherein the substantially transparent layers includes at least an organic layer and an electrically conductive layer.

15. The display assembly of claim 13, wherein the light sensor circuit includes a camera and the light sensor is part of the camera.

16. The display assembly of claim 13, further comprising an optics layer between at least a part of the OLED display matrix and the light sensor circuit.

17. The display assembly of claim 13, wherein the light sensor circuit is a proximity sensor.

18. The display assembly of claim 13, wherein the light sensor circuit includes at least two cameras spaced apart from each other.

19. A method of manufacturing a display assembly for a mobile device, the method comprising:

attaching an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display matrix to a touch screen including a transparent screen and a touch sensor panel;

positioning a camera underneath at least a portion of the OLED display matrix;

coupling a transistor circuit to control the OLED display matrix;

coupling the transistor circuit, the camera, and the touch sensor panel to a processor;

configuring the OLED display matrix to turn a region thereon substantially transparent in response to a command from the processor, while the mobile device is displaying a visual representation on the OLED display matrix.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein positioning the camera includes positioning the camera above or in plane with a bottom electrode layer of the OLED display matrix.
