Abstract

Surgical end effectors and fastener cartridges having firing lockout arrangements for preventing or limit a firing stroke when a cartridge has not been operably installed in the end effector or a spent cartridge has not been replaced.

Claims

1. A surgical cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body defining a path therethrough for operably receiving a firing member of a surgical instrument; and

an alignment member operably supported in the cartridge body and being configured to move the firing member from an inoperable configuration wherein firing member is misaligned with the path to an operable configuration wherein the firing member is in alignment with the path when the firing member is driven into contact therewith.

20. A surgical instrument comprising:

a handle;

a firing system operably supported by said handle and configured to selectively generate at least one rotary firing motion;

a shaft assembly operably extending from said handle and defining a shaft axis, said shaft assembly comprising at least one rotary drive shaft assembly operably interfacing with said firing system;

an articulation joint assembly comprising;

a first joint segment defining a proximal socket oriented at a distal end of said shaft assembly;

a second joint segment comprising a proximal gimbal movably supported within said proximal socket and defining a distal socket;

a third joint segment comprising a distal gimbal movably supported within said distal socket and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises;

a surgical end effector operably coupled to said third joint segment and comprising a firing member operably interfacing with said at least one rotary drive shaft assembly and being configured to move within said surgical end effector in response to an application of said at least one rotary firing motion to said at least one rotary drive shaft assembly; and

articulation means for selectively moving said third joint segment in multiple directions that are transverse to said shaft axis.

21. The surgical instrument of claim 20, wherein said proximal gimbal comprises a first ball-segment and wherein said distal gimbal comprises a second ball segment.

22. The surgical instrument of claim 20, wherein said articulation means comprises:

an articulation system operably supported by said handle and configured to selectively generate a plurality of articulation motions; and

a plurality of articulation cables operably interfacing with said articulation system and coupled to said third joint segment for applying said articulation motions thereto.

23. The surgical instrument of claim 20, wherein said surgical end effector comprises:

a cartridge mounting portion operably coupled to said third joint segment and being configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge therein; and

an anvil pivotally supported on said cartridge mounting portion for selective travel between open and closed positions.

24. The surgical instrument of claim 23, wherein said surgical end effector further comprises an implement drive shaft rotatably supported by said cartridge mounting portion and configured to receive said rotary firing motions from said at least one rotary drive shaft assembly and wherein said firing member is threadably journaled on said implement drive shaft.

25. The surgical instrument of claim 24, wherein said firing member is configured to slidably engage said anvil and said cartridge mounting portion.

26. The surgical instrument of claim 24, wherein said rotary drive shaft assembly comprises:

a first rotary firing shaft configured to receive said at least one rotary firing motion from said firing system;

a second rotary firing shaft configured to operably interface with said implement drive shaft; and

an intermediate firing shaft operably interfacing with said first and second rotary firing shafts.

27. The surgical instrument of claim 26, wherein said second rotary firing shaft extends through at least a portion of said articulation joint assembly.

28. The surgical instrument of claim 27, wherein at least a portion of said intermediate firing shaft extends through at least said portion of said articulation joint assembly.

29. The surgical instrument of claim 28, wherein a proximal portion of said intermediate firing shaft is received within a distal end portion of said first rotary firing shaft.

30. The surgical instrument of claim 20, wherein said firing system comprises at least one motor supported by said handle.

31. A surgical instrument comprising:

a handle;

a firing system operably supported by said handle and configured to selectively generate at least one rotary firing motion;

a shaft assembly defining a shaft axis and comprising at least one rotary drive shaft assembly operably interfacing with said firing system;

an articulation joint assembly comprising;

a first joint segment defining a proximal socket oriented at a distal end of said shaft assembly;

a second joint segment comprising a proximal ball segment movably supported within said proximal socket and defining a distal socket;

a third joint segment comprising a distal ball segment movably supported within said distal socket and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises;

a cable-actuated articulation assembly operably interfacing with said third joint segment for selectively moving said third joint segment in multiple directions that are transverse to said shaft axis; and

a surgical end effector operably coupled to said third joint segment and comprising a firing member operably interfacing with said at least one rotary drive shaft assembly and being configured to move within said surgical end effector in response to an application of said at least one rotary firing motion to said at least one rotary drive shaft assembly.

32. The surgical instrument of claim 31, wherein said surgical end effector is removably affixed to said third joint segment.

33. The surgical instrument of claim 31, wherein said surgical end effector comprises a mounting portion and wherein said third joint segment is rotatable relative to said mounting member.

34. The surgical instrument of claim 31, wherein said cable-actuated articulation assembly comprises a plurality of cables attached to said third joint segment and supported between said third joint segment and a cable system actuator that is configured to selectively apply pushing and pulling motions to said plurality of cables.

35. The surgical instrument of claim 31, wherein said surgical end effector comprises:

a cartridge mounting portion operably coupled to said third joint segment and being configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge therein; and

an anvil pivotally supported on said cartridge mounting portion for selective travel between open and closed positions.

36. The surgical instrument of claim 35, wherein said surgical end effector further comprises an implement drive shaft rotatably supported by said cartridge mounting portion and configured to receive said rotary firing motions from said at least one rotary drive shaft assembly and wherein said firing member is threadably journaled on said implement drive shaft.

37. The surgical instrument of claim 36, wherein said firing member is configured to slidably engage said anvil and said cartridge mounting portion.

38. The surgical instrument of claim 31, wherein said rotary drive shaft assembly comprises:

a first rotary firing shaft configured to receive said at least one rotary firing motion from said firing system;

a second rotary firing shaft configured to operably interface with said implement drive shaft; and

an intermediate firing shaft operably interfacing with said first and second rotary firing shafts.

39. The surgical instrument of claim 38, wherein said second rotary firing shaft extends through at least a portion of said articulation joint assembly.

40. A surgical instrument comprising:

a handle;

a firing system operably supported by said handle and configured to selectively generate at least one rotary firing motion;

a shaft assembly defining a shaft axis and comprising at least one rotary drive shaft assembly operably interfacing with said firing system;

an articulation joint assembly comprising;

a first joint segment defining a proximal socket oriented at a distal end of said shaft assembly;

a second joint segment comprising a proximal ball segment movably supported within said proximal socket and defining a distal socket;

a third joint segment comprising a distal ball segment movably supported within said distal socket and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises;

a cable-actuated articulation assembly operably interfacing with said third joint segment for selectively moving said third joint segment in multiple directions that are transverse to said shaft axis; and

a surgical end effector removably coupled to said third joint segment, said surgical end effector comprising;

a cartridge mounting portion configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge therein;

an implement drive shaft rotatably supported by said cartridge mounting portion and configured to receive said rotary firing motions from said at least one rotary drive shaft assembly;

an anvil pivotally supported on said cartridge mounting portion for selective travel between open and closed positions; and

a firing member threadably journaled on said implement drive shaft and being configured to slidably engage said anvil and said cartridge mounting portion.
