Abstract

In embodiments of the present invention improved capabilities are described for a system for collecting aviation flight cycle data comprising a radio frequency (RF) tag configured to read sensor information from a sensor, the RF tag comprising (i) an RF and analog block for receiving and transmitting an RF signal, (ii) a data processing and controller block for digital information processing, and (iii) a memory store, wherein the RF tag is at least in part powered by an external RF signal received by the RF and analog block; and a sensor for generating sensor information indicative of an airborne flight cycle parameter, wherein the RF tag periodically collects the sensor information generated by the sensor and stores the sensor information in the memory store.

Claims

1. A system for collecting aviation flight cycle data, comprising:

a radio frequency (RF) tag configured to read sensor information from a sensor, the RF tag comprising (i) an RF and analog block for receiving and transmitting an RF signal, (ii) a data processing and controller block for digital information processing, and (iii) a memory store, wherein the RF tag is at least in part powered by an external RF signal received by the RF and analog block; and

a sensor for generating sensor information indicative of an airborne flight cycle parameter,

wherein the RF tag periodically collects the sensor information generated by the sensor and stores the sensor information in the memory store.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor is an air pressure sensor and the airborne flight cycle parameter is air pressure.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor is a temperature sensor and the airborne flight cycle parameter is temperature.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor is a force sensor and the airborne flight cycle parameter is force.

The system of claim 1, wherein the data processing and controller block compares the sensor information to a flight cycle parameter threshold, and if it is determined that the sensor information exceeds the flight cycle parameter threshold then a flight cycle indication is stored in the memory store.

The system of claim 5, wherein the flight cycle indication accumulates in value with each additional flight cycle indication such that the flight cycle indication at a given time is an indication of the number of times a component to which the RF tag and sensor are attached has undergone airborne flight cycles.

The system of claim 6, wherein an RF interrogator accesses and reads the RF tag memory store, a computing system compares the number of airborne flight cycles undergone by the component and compares the number of airborne flight cycles to a service threshold, and if the number of airborne flight cycles exceeds the service threshold, triggers a service of the component.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the RF tag and the sensor are mounted on a single substrate.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a display for displaying the sensor information.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the display communicates with the RF tag through a communications bus.

11. A method for collecting aviation flight cycle data, comprising:

providing a radio frequency (RF) tag configured to read sensor information from a sensor, the RF tag comprising (i) an RF and analog block for receiving and transmitting an RF signal, (ii) a data processing and controller block for digital information processing, and (iii) a memory store, wherein the RF tag is at least in part powered by an external RF signal received by the RF and analog block; and

generating sensor information indicative of an airborne flight cycle parameter, wherein the RF tag periodically collects the sensor information generated from the sensor and stores the sensor information in the memory store.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the sensor is an air pressure sensor and the airborne flight cycle parameter is air pressure.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the sensor is a temperature sensor and the airborne flight cycle parameter is temperature.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the sensor is a force sensor and the airborne flight cycle parameter is force.

The method of claim 11, wherein the data processing and controller block compares the sensor information to a flight cycle parameter threshold, and if it is determined that the sensor information exceeds the flight cycle parameter threshold then a flight cycle indication is stored in the memory store.

The method of claim 15, wherein the flight cycle indication accumulates in value with each additional flight cycle indication such that the flight cycle indication at a given time is an indication of the number of times a component to which the RF tag and sensor are attached has undergone airborne flight cycles.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein an RF interrogator accesses and reads the RF tag memory store, a computing system compares the number of airborne flight cycles undergone by the component and compares the number of airborne flight cycles to a service threshold, and if the number of airborne flight cycles exceeds the service threshold, triggers a service of the component.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein the RF tag and the sensor are mounted on a single substrate.

19. The method of claim 11, further comprising a display for displaying the sensor information.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the display communicates with the RF tag through a communications bus.
