Location-Based Addressing Lighting and Environmental Control System, Device and Method
First Claim
1. A system for controlling one or more devices to be controlled using location-based addressing, the system comprising:
- a first device configured to transmit control signals containing function codes and location-based addresses that code for one or more unchanging spacial locations; and
one or more devices to be controlled configured to receive the control signals, wherein each of the one or more devices to be controlled includes a logic/memory unit programmed with a location descriptor corresponding to at least one of the one or more unchanging spacial locations;
wherein each logic/memory unit is programmed to compare the location based addresses to the programmed location descriptor and perform functions corresponding to the function codes in response to a match between the location-based addresses and the programmed location descriptor.

Abstract
Location-Based Addressing (LBA) is a method of controlling and commissioning networked lighting devices. The lighting devices communicate over a wireless network using radio frequency communication protocols. The lighting devices are commissioned or grouped based on their 5 respective locations in a building floor plan or a building architecture. The lighting devices are commissioned to respond to radio frequency communications that correspond to their respective locations. This imposed location-based architecture reduces the amount of transmitted data required to control the lighting devices and, thus, reduces the radio bandwidth required to control the lighting devices. In other words, controlling devices “multicast” instructions and controlled devices “listen” for instructions and act only upon instructions that correspond to their respective location. Hand shaking or two-way communication between the controlling devices and the controlled devices is not required.

10. A method of controlling a device commissioned with one or more location descriptors corresponding a location where the device is, the method comprising the steps:
-
transmitting control signals with function codes and location-based addresses that code for the location of the device; receiving the control signals at the device; comparing the location based addresses in the received control signals to the programmed location descriptor; executing functions of the device corresponding to the function codes, based on a match between the one or more location descriptors and the location-based addresses in the received control signals. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12)

13. A method of commissioning one or more devices to be controlled using location based addresses comprising the steps:
-
selecting a location descriptor for a group of devices to be controlled; formatting and transmitting a message to the one or more devices to be controlled containing the selected location descriptor; confirming that the selected location descriptor is available; binding the group of devices with the selected location descriptor. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16)
