Abstract

A mobile terminal having a touch screen and a method present a user interface in the mobile terminal having a touch screen. The method includes: detecting a touched area corresponding to a touch when the touch is sensed in the touch screen; and executing different functions according to whether the detected touched area is equal to or greater than a preset area threshold. Various touch inputs are sensed through a touch screen in the mobile terminal, and the mobile terminal and method present user interfaces corresponding to the respective touch inputs.

Claims

1. A mobile terminal comprising:

a touch screen for receiving a touch input; and

a controller configured to;

determine whether the touch input is a finger input or a palm input; and

execute a first operation if the touch input is a finger input, and execute a second operation if the touch input is a palm input.

2. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to:

detect a touched area of the touch screen defined by at least one of a plurality of coordinates corresponding to the touch input; and

determine whether the touch input is the palm input or the finger input based on the least one of the plurality of coordinates corresponding to the touched area.

3. The mobile terminal of claim 2, wherein the controller is configured to:

if the touched area exceeds a preset area threshold, determine that the touch input is the palm input; and

if the preset area threshold exceeds the touched area of the touch screen, determine that the touch input is the finger input.

4. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to:

detect a touched area of the touch screen defined by at least one of a plurality of coordinates corresponding to the touch input;

determine whether the touch input is the palm input or the finger input based on the detected touched area; and

detect a duration of the touch input; and

execute a third operation if the touch input is the palm input and the duration of the touch input exceeds a preset duration.

5. The mobile terminal of claim 4, wherein the third operation comprises stopping an output of sound.

6. The mobile terminal of claim 4, wherein the third operation comprises setting a mode or a state of the mobile terminal.

7. The mobile terminal of claim 4, wherein the third operation comprises controlling an output of an audio signal.

8. The mobile terminal of claim 4, wherein the second operation or the third operation comprises an operation related to a phone call.

9. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the second operation comprises at least one of terminating a currently executed application and stopping output of a video or audio.

10. The mobile terminal of claim 9, wherein the second operation is an operation related to a phone call.

11. A method for providing a user interface in a mobile terminal having a touch screen, the method comprising:

receiving a touch input;

determining whether the touch input is a finger input or a palm input; and

executing a first operation if the touch input is a finger input, and executing a second operation if the touch input is a palm input.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein determining whether the touch input is a finger input or a palm input comprises:

detecting a touched area of the touch screen defined by at least one of a plurality of coordinates corresponding to the touch input; and

determining whether touch input is the palm input or the finger input based on the detected touched area.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein determining whether the touch input is the palm input or the finger input based on the detected touched area comprises:

if the detected touched area exceeds a preset area threshold, determining that the touch input is the palm input; and

if the preset area threshold exceeds the detected touched area of the touch screen, determining that the touch input is the finger input.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein determining whether the touch input is a finger input or a palm input comprises:

detecting a touched area of the touch screen defined by at least one of a plurality of coordinates corresponding to the touch input;

determining whether the touch input is the palm input or the finger input based on the detected touched area; and

detecting a duration of the touch input,

executing a third operation if the touch input is the palm input and the duration of the touch input exceeds a preset duration.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the second operation or the third operation comprises an operation related to a phone call.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

receiving a touch input on a touch screen;

determining whether the touch input is a finger input or a palm input; and

executing a first operation if the touch input is a finger input, and executing a second operation if the touch input is a palm input.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the operations further comprise:

detecting a touched area of the touch screen defined by at least one of a plurality of coordinates corresponding to the touch input; and

determining whether touch input is the palm input or the finger input based on the detected touched area.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein determining whether the touch input is the palm input or the finger input based on the detected touched area comprises:

if the detected touched area exceeds a preset area threshold, determining that the touch input is the palm input; and

if the preset area threshold exceeds the detected touched area of the touch screen, determining that the touch input is the finger input.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein determining whether the touch input is a finger input or a palm input comprises:

detecting a touched area of the touch screen defined by at least one of a plurality of coordinates corresponding to the touch input;

determining whether the touch input is the palm input or the finger input based on the detected touched area;

detecting a duration of the touch input; and

executing a third operation if the touch input is the palm input and the duration of the touch input exceeds a preset duration.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the second operation or the third operation comprises an operation related to a phone call.
