Abstract

An application server that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, web interface for receiving a client request from a web server operating within an interactive TV network and application logic operatively coupled to the web interface for executing source code and generating HTML code according to the client request where the application logic is operatively coupled to a database that serves as a repository for executable source code, images and user information indexed according to the client request where the application logic receives the executed source code from the database and supplies the HTML code to the web server by way of the web interface and where the web server submits to a client device that generated the client request the HTML code for rendering a presentation at the client device. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims

1. A network element comprising:

a processor; and

a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising;

receiving a client request via a network;

executing first code retrieved from a database coupled to the network; and

generating second code for execution by a server in response to the client request,

wherein the client request is submitted via a subscriber path of the network comprising the server and the network element, wherein the subscriber path is symmetrical with a content provider path of the network for transmitting media content, and wherein the subscriber path and content provider path are logically separated so that subscriber information and content provider information are shared only via the database.

2. The network element of claim 1, wherein execution of the second code by the server enables a customized presentation at equipment of the client.

3. The network element of claim 2, wherein the equipment of the client comprises a set-top box, a computer, or a mobile phone.

4. The network element of claim 1, wherein the first code comprises a server-side script, a client-side script, media content, or styling information.

5. The network element of claim 4, wherein the server-side script comprises an application framework script, a hypertext preprocessor script, or a Java server pages script.

6. The network element of claim 1, wherein the second code comprises client-specific rendering code for rendering a customized presentation at equipment of the client.

7. The network element of claim 6, wherein the client-specific rendering code is generated by the network element by executing a server-side script included in the retrieved first code.

8. The network element of claim 6, wherein the client-specific rendering code comprises dynamic hypertext markup language code.

9. The network element of claim 1, wherein the network comprises an interactive television system, and wherein the first code defines a plurality of services supplied by the interactive television system.

10. The network element of claim 9, wherein the operations further comprise adding, updating, loading, deploying or modifying an interactive television service by modifying the first code.

11. A method comprising:

receiving, by an application server comprising a processor, a client request for media content;

executing, by the application server, first code retrieved from a database coupled to the application server; and

generating, by the application server, second code for execution by a web server in response to the client request,

wherein the client request is submitted via a subscriber path of a network comprising the web server and the application server, wherein the subscriber path is symmetrical with a content provider path of the network for transmitting the media content, and wherein the subscriber path and content provider path are logically separated so that subscriber information and content provider information are shared only via the database.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein execution of the second code by the web server enables a customized presentation at equipment of the client.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the first code comprises a server-side script, a client-side script, media content, or styling information.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the second code comprises dynamic hypertext markup language code.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the network comprises an interactive television system, and wherein the first code defines a plurality of services supplied by the interactive television system.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein the media content comprises audio content, image content, or a combination thereof.

17. A machine-readable storage medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

receiving a client request for media content via a network coupled to the processor;

executing first code retrieved from a database coupled to the network; and

generating second code for execution by a server in response to the client request,

wherein the client request is submitted via a subscriber path of the network comprising the server and the processor, wherein the subscriber path is symmetrical with a content provider path of the network for transmitting the media content, and wherein the subscriber path and content provider path are logically separated so that subscriber information and content provider information are shared only via the database.

18. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 17, wherein the processor and the server respectively comprise an application server and a web server communicating via the network.

19. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 17, wherein the second code comprises client-specific rendering code for rendering a customized presentation at equipment of the client.

20. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 17, wherein the first code comprises a server-side script, a client-side script, media content, or styling information.
