Abstract

Systems and methods for automatically delivering medication to a user. A sensor coupled to a user can collect information regarding the user. A controller can use the collected information to determine an amount of medication to provide the user. The controller can instruct a drug delivery device to dispense the medication to the user. The drug delivery device can be a wearable insulin pump that is directly coupled to the user. The controller can be part of or implemented in a cellphone. A user can be required to provide a confirmation input to allow a determined amount of insulin to be provided to the user based on detected glucose levels of the user. The sensor, controller, and drug delivery device can communicate wirelessly.

Claims

1. A wearable automated medication delivery system, comprising:

a sensor coupled to a user;

a controller to receive information from the sensor, the controller to determine a delivery of a medication to a user based on the information from the sensor; and

a wearable drug delivery device coupled to the user, the wearable drug delivery device to automatically deliver the medication to the user based on an instruction from the controller.

2. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 1, wherein the sensor is embedded within the wearable drug delivery device.

3. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 1, wherein the controller is embedded within the wearable drug delivery device.

4. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 1, further comprising a wireless accessory device.

5. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 4, wherein the wireless accessory device is a wearable wireless accessory device.

6. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 4, wherein the wearable drug delivery device includes an attachable module providing a wireless communications interface.

7. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 4, wherein the sensor wirelessly transmits information from the sensor to the wireless accessory device and the wireless accessory device wireless transmits the instruction from the controller to the wearable drug delivery device.

8. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 7, wherein the controller is positioned within the wireless accessory device.

9. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 7, further comprising a local wireless device.

10. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 9, wherein the local wireless device is a cellphone.

11. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 10, wherein the controller is positioned within the cellphone.

12. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 11, wherein the wireless accessory device relays the information from the sensor to the cellphone and relays the instruction from the cellphone to the wearable drug delivery device.

13. The wearable automated medication delivery system of claim 12, wherein the wearable drug delivery device includes a user input device, wherein the wearable drug delivery device delivers the medication to the user after the user provides a confirmation input using the user input device.

14. A wearable automated insulin delivery system, comprising:

a sensor coupled to a user, the sensor detecting glucose levels of the user;

a cellphone, the cellphone determining a delivery of insulin to the user based on the detected glucose levels of the user; and

a wearable drug delivery device having a reservoir of insulin and a user input device, the wearable drug delivery device directly coupled to the user, the wearable drug delivery device receiving an instruction from the cellphone for the delivery of insulin to the user, wherein the user is required to provide confirmation of delivery using the user input device before the insulin is delivered to the user.

15. The wearable automated insulin delivery system of claim 14, wherein the wearable drug delivery device includes a user output device, wherein the user output device provides a notification to the user to prompt the user to provide the confirmation.

16. The wearable automated insulin delivery system of claim 15, wherein the notification is a visual notification.

17. The wearable automated insulin delivery system of claim 15, wherein the notification is a vibrational notification.

18. The wearable automated insulin delivery system of claim 15, wherein the notification is an audible notification.

19. The wearable automated insulin delivery system of claim 15, wherein the insulin is delivered to the user only if the user provides the confirmation within a predetermined amount of time from the provided notification.

20. The wearable automated insulin delivery system of claim 14, further comprising a wearable wireless accessory device, wherein the wearable wireless accessory device relays the detected glucose levels of the user from the sensor to the cellphone and relays the instruction from the cellphone to the wearable drug delivery device.

21. The wearable automated insulin delivery system of claim 14, wherein the sensor is positioned within the wearable drug delivery device.

22. The wearable automated insulin delivery system of claim 14, wherein the user input device is an accelerometer.

23. A method, comprising:

detecting glucose levels of a user using a sensor coupled to the user;

wirelessly transmitting the detected glucose levels of the user from the sensor to a controller;

determining a delivery of insulin to the user based on the detected glucose levels of the user;

wirelessly transmitting an instruction for the delivery of insulin to the user to a wearable insulin delivery device directly coupled to the user;

providing a notification to the user indicating receipt of the instruction for the delivery of insulin to the user; and

delivering the insulin to the user when the user provides a confirmation within a predetermined amount of time from providing the notification, otherwise blocking delivery of the insulin to the user.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein providing the notification comprises providing a visual, audible, or vibrational notification.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein the user provides confirmation using a user input device provided with the wearable insulin delivery device.
